Do you think americans got short changed?

Justin Trudeau announced that every canadian who lost their job gets 2000 a MONTH for 4 months to help with the crisis after passing the legislation UNANIMOUSLY by all parties, including conservatives.

This compared to only 1200 for americans...for a rich country i'm surprised they got shafted..

Amazing when a less powerful country can afford to offer it's citizens a larger payment and for 4 months. The Republicans need to get their head out of their ass on this one.

Not the $800 this topic is trying to make you believe.

That's irrelevant the US takes in more taxes and generates more money in a year. Acting like the US can't afford it is a joke.

It's for 4 months vs. 1 month so $8000 CAN comes out to $5615.28 USD. Meanwhile American taxpayers get $1200 per person once and $500 for each child they have. If they were doing 4 payments for $1200 each then it would be the $300 difference you say, instead it's one payment and that is it.

Hey, we should be happy all americans are getting money now, before only about 50% of americans were going to get anything at all.

Now it's going to be based on SS# and it doesn't sound like there is a min income for 2018 anymore, so you know anyone going to college that year, or who was in HS etc, will actually get money now.

I do think people ALREADY getting benefits should not get any money, personally. So if your on unemployment already, or disability, or social security etc, and are already getting a check from the gov, then that would cover the $1200 (if you get that much, or bring it up to $1200 if you don't).

I know that sounds mean, but you are ALREADY getting money......so why give more?

As far as people still working, it's not really fair for them to work and end up getting around the same money as everyone not working, so I think they should get the $1200 as well.

This plan works over all, but it's still just.....so much money, we are in effect going to quadruple our deffcit in one year (they did the whole 1.5 trill thing to save the stock market already and this is another 2 trillion and are deficit before was 1.02 trillion.)

That has to come from somewhere, and sadly it's going to be us in the long term.

So this may sound great to lots of people, I hear people going like, sweet, gonna get a game system, or rock, I want some new furniture etc.

But this is probably like the most expensive loan anyone has ever taken, because we (the american people) are getting like 1/10th of it in direct cash, but we are going to have to pay it all back eventually.....at 10x the amount we got.

Even loan sharks are usually not that harsh.

People working will be getting $1200, as will those on Social Security and SSI. What gets me is how hard some people fought against giving people an extra $600 a month for 4 months added to their unemployment payout since it's not their fault that they're unemployed. There's too many people in this country living in their 'ivory tower' to where they can't sympathize or relate to anyone who isn't in their predicament.

you still have to have done taxes in either 2017 or 2018.

the income numbers are still the same. the only thing changed is that you must have a social security number.

Duckbear has left out the very important words "up to" in reporting this. How much one gets is based on how much one is losing, with $2k/month being the maximum. This emergency funding is an expansion of the existing EI system, which functions similarly but needs streamlining and some extra funding to handle a crisis of this magnitude.

1) $2000 CAD is only like $1200 USD

2) They can't afford it any more than we can. We're just running up a credit card bill.

3) And perhaps most importantly, Canada's plan is supposedly only for the unemployed. The US is for everybody... and the US afaik has a second set of benefits for the unemployed on top of normal unemployment so it's more than $1200. At the end of the day once you factor in everything, the US is paying out a lot more overall.

Congress just passed a $4.5T corporate bailout bill. $700B went to bail out investors who made bad investments. Why shouldn't poor people get some $250B emergency UBI bread crumbs?

It's the fed printing the money. That $4.5T is coming out of our pockets from inflation. It's not a loan.

My diluted vodka will not light. Probably need 40% for that.

It's funny because I was thinking of ordering a flask and heater the other day to distill 95% alcohol. That + orange juice.

idk, maybe because somehow it *might* be worse if we lost our industries which normally provide salaries? Or do you want to just keep printing money forever without actually producing anything so a barrel full of benjamins won't be enough to buy a loaf of bread?
