Whirlpool is not necessary at all, only to get in the Dragon's Den, to the E4 the first time and the Whirl Islands. There's no need to teach it to have it on your team at all times. Same goes for Rock Smash really.

Yeah, you don't need Whirlpool anymore, and Rock Smash has been optional the whole time. Don't worry about having them on your main team.

It actually is related to the behind the scenes calculations. Here's how catching works:

Each Pokmon has an innate catch rate. This catch rate is then modified by things like percentage of health remaining, status conditions, what ball you're using, and so on. Anyway, there's a bunch of math, and it'll eventually produce a target number. Then the RNG will pull four times and each of these numbers will be compared to the target number. If each of the four numbers was lower than the target, you'll successfully catch the Pokmon. If some of them weren't? The ball will shake once for each one that was, and then the Pokmon will escape.

Chansey is only a problem if you're doing Yellow Version or the remakes. Red/Blue had them available in Cerulean Cave.

Scyther/Pinsir are available at the Game Corner if you have too much trouble getting them normally. Though I seem to remember catching Pinsir properly in Yellow, since they lowered its level in that game enough that you could procure one for Pika Cup in Stadium. (Which is not to say that you should, because Pinsir's movepool was ass for at least three generations or so. Maybe longer.)

I had red version, so buying a porygon was like 9999 coins. After that injust wanted to get away.

I decided I'm going with houndoom. I have certain rules ive been trying to stick by this playthrough and Honchkrow falls into that nono area. I can't have exceptions

While i do usually have Gyarados and i SHOULDN'T have had him, I think Red Gyarados was different enough

I think they wanted you to experiment, but everyone just looks it up in a guide. But consider yourself lucky that this is all it takes. Some Pokmon need you to place objects and then wait weeks for their value to increase enough for the Pokmon to show up.

Bulbapedia says that if you have a Lv42 Houndour in Gen 4, it should know Fire Fang already! :P

Flame Wheel is also physical but iirc Houndour doesn't learn it.

Can't think of any others offhand, but there are probably a couple.

There's a couple, but Houndoom only learns Fire Fang. It's better as a special attacker anyway, so it's no big deal.

The WORST thing about Voltorb Flip (and the Battle Frontier) is that all the good moves are hidden behind it. I HAD to play Voltorb Flip because otherwise my Politoed wasn't getting an Ice movie to beat Clair OR Lance.

Ran into a snag. There doesn't seem to be many decent ice physical attacks and piloswine seems to be an attacker.

And he seems to be have a nature that supports his special attack and it's still half his attack

Yeah, even in Gen 8 there still aren't many good physical Ice attacks. That's one of the reasons why Kyurem-Black is OU even though it has a massive attack stat. Mamoswine doesn't even get anything with a decent base power until Gen 5. At least it has Ice Shard.

In Gen I, critical hit rate ran off your Speed stat. So Pokemon like Persian, Tauros, Dugtrio,... were used a lot purely because their high Speed stat allowed them to crit often. Scyther wasn't used a lot (because Bug/Flying isn't/wasn't a good type), but if it was used, that was the strategy to go for as well: Agility+Slash.

I don't know how it's decided post Gen I though.

I got my Scizor, and I went ahead and got Golem, Machamp, and Gengar while I was at it

So I dunno if this is a known thing but I'm playing on a New 3ds XL (Majora's mask edition!)

I did the trade on a DSi with another copy of Soul Silver we got. (This is how I got steelix)

The graphics are MUCH more crisper on the DSi than they are on the 3ds XL. what gives? It almost seems blurry in comparison

Scizor is actually significantly slower than Scyther and relatively slow compared to other Pokemon. Comes with gaining Steel typing.

IIRC in Gen 1 it was something like Crit Rate = Base Speed / 512, except for moves like Slash, which got Base Speed / 64 and were thus guaranteed for many Pokemon.

Gen 2 and 3 gave high crit moves a base 25% crit rate. Apparently that was reduced to 12.5% starting in Gen 4. So, high crit moves are weaker in Soul Silver than they were in original GSC, let alone RBY.

As long as Scizor's ability is Technician, yeah. Technician increase the base power of moves which have a power of 60 or less by 50%.

I'd say it's better even without Technician. You trade 10 base power and a 10% chance of raising attack for +1 priority and perfect accuracy.

Just Select really. Maybe just Start too, Ive just always used Select.

(This also works on VC GB games and provides a GB or GBC border to those, and then if you use the 3D it gives you the little depth between that border and the game screen. Combine with L+R+Y on GB games to shift from greyscale to the classic green for maximum OG display.)

Yeah, Ice is probably the worst defensive type. Ice/Ground is probably its best pairing, and it still isn't that great. At least Mamoswine eventually got Thick Fat to help out.
