I played Red Version. Religiously. Pokemon was seriously a magical, beautiful thing when it came out. I felt like it was alive, ANYTHING could happen in it. I believed all of the Pokegod and Mew Rumors because I just thought yea, it could happen.

but ...that was it. I dunno why I didn't keep going (okay probably money) but I stayed at Red from then on.

College rolled around and I DID get Platinum cause why the fuck not. I even battled and traded with some of yall. Ahhh I miss Nintendo Wi Fi on DS. but man, That was a HUGE jump for me. Red to Platinum. I do remember liking it. Honchkrow as mah boi.

but again, that was it. a coworker that you guys might know as Steak girl actually bought me Alpha Sapphire some years ago and I've had it since. I played it for literally one minute just to have a save file so I could redeem all of the legendaries that gamestop got. Then Nintendo sent my store a free copy of pokemon sun. Nobody had a 3ds at the time so I just kept it. Out of no where my pokemon log is building.

Gamestop had a B1g1 free on DS games deal and I ordered Soul Silver and Heart gold. I'm not keeping heart gold but since it would make enough profit on it's own, I kept Soul Silver. I actually have the box and the case, AND THE POKEWALKER because a customer donated it a long time ago. I actually forgot about it.

so I got those now and since this is theoretically the closest to Red Version (well, as much as a remake of an old gameboy game can be) I think I'll fit at home

Off the top of my head, this is how you can tell

the engraving on the back isn't that deep on a real copy

the serial number on the motherboard of the cartridge will line up with the ridges

the cartridge has to be black

the font and colors of the label might be off so refer to a real copy found in an image search

also the label itself is a giveaway too, if its too misalligned or cheap looking, its a no go

each cartridge has a little spot barely visible on the top to indicate it has an infrared sensor for the poke walker. Bootleggers can't be bothered to replicate this

then finally

just put it in your 3ds. Apparently 3DSes are good at not playing bootleg crap. Sometimes "better" bootleg stuff will play as a different game entirely on the 3ds.

My copy not only did NOT have a save file on it, which scared me, and it DID freeze a few times, it seems to be running now

I think this passes, but I'll still have to test it with the walker

When I rebought some of my stolen games I noticed some of the DS games like Order of Ecclesia the plastic of the cardtridge was a darker shade of black than other DS games. I assumed it was pirated.

This reminds me that I should find my Pokwalker and try again to get Pikachu with Surf or Fly. Never managed to get that when the game was new.

God only knows where the Walker itself is though; last I recall my son had it a couple years back...

I think thats actually games that run better on DSi (or have some other functionality with it, like using the camera or the higher-security wifi options). My copies of Pokmon White and White 2 are the same way and I know for a fact I bought both of them brand new.

I'm not sure if it's DSi or not. I know all the DS Pokemon Games from HGSS were a darker shade of black because of the infrared sensor. I don't think Order of Ecclesia was DSi enhanced anyway.

So I started my adventure and got a Totodile. I named him grater because that sounds like gator and he's great. Also he will grate you. There's some pervert outside of the lab.

I mentioned that I played Platinum but I should also mention that I never got a shiny. I'm going to try really hard to get one on this play through. Even though it's entirely up to chance and not up to me at all. So I'm sent on a mission to go to the next town over. Without Pokeballs. I'm going to be really pissed off if I run into a shiny here

Speaking of which. I'm going to try, as much as possible, to not use any Pokemon from Kanto. Which I know is very hard because that's Joto's sister region and this is the second game in the series. They're pretty intertwined. But still, I need to experience new things. I remember I still had a Gyarados in Platinum and I felt bad about it even though Gyarados kicks ass

On my way to visit mr. Pokemon, I'm yet again stop by another pervert who calls me out on walking by his house without going in it. So he's trying to lure little children? He gives me some sort of box and I'm just on my way. I still don't go in his house. I meet Doctor Pokemon he gives me an egg to take back to my professor. Good old Professor Oak is there and he gives me a good old-fashioned Pokedex. On my way back I encounter some redheaded ass who stole Chikorita. Because I haven't caught any other Pokemon, grater is on level 10. He makes paste out of Chikorita. I named him Ging. Cause you know, red head. Also it sounds like a VD. I'm told about gyms and I'm on my happy way

Gyarados in Gen 4 was sick because the physical/special split meant it could finally make use of STAB

So I head back north and find a dark cave. I try to sequence break and muscle my way through it but I need an hm called rock smash. So instead go to the next town. I find a bellsprout tower and decide to raid it. At the end I get flash

I should mention I still only have one pokemon. I actually end up evolving this fucker, I get a croconaw. I'm gonna try to solo this gym soon.

I'll need a pokemon that can learn flash and rock smash though. In town I can trade a bell sprout for an onix. I guess that's the rock smash candidate. Whos a good HM whore?

I guess I haven't caught any Pokemon because I just simply don't feel like raising any fodder right now. I'm not very thrilled about hoot-hoots and ratattas, also don't get me started with zubats and geodudes

Gen I and II don't really have great all-round HM slaves. I think Bellsprout learns both Cut and Flash. After that you might be well off getting a Psyduck or something.

Also HGSS are great, have fun.

I'm aware of the Special split, so that means My Grater might not do well with Surf unlike Blastoise would've with Red Version. Grater seems to be more physical

so I might even need two HM whores

I went to the gym but I didn't do what you think I did

I went out and caught two bell sprouts and traded one for a lvl 3 onix

I figured I was gonna have Bellsprout fight the gym with Croco backing him up but then I saw it was a flying gym. Whoops

but I figured this was a great time to level up Onix with his rockiness

it took a long time because Onix is weak right now but with lots of binds and tackles, we got through the gym. Even beat Pidgeotto.

I know Brock has Geodude, but man this gym sucks. They just had Spearow, Pidgey, and the Otto. At least Brock had an Onix.

Its like if a Gym leader had a Ratata.

Sprout and onix are lvl 8

I remember reading that Onix is terrible stat wise. At least in the first games. Is that still the case here in the remake?

Onix is still bad. I wouldn't bother with it unless you can trade it to evolve it to Steelix, and even that's pretty late in the game.

You might need Flash at some point late in the game. I can't remember if that cave is still dark in the remakes. In any case, it's still much easier to see in there without Flash than in the originals.

I have no comment on the thing's usability. You're playing the main in-game story of a pokemon game, so pretty much everything works with a bit of grinding and/or brainpower.

because the next area is littered with Mareeps, I keep getting paralyzed

and because of my lack of money, I can't stock up with Paralyze Heals

I keep having to go back to Violet to heal

Do you have any non-contact moves? Using those won't trigger Static.

Otherwise just know that encounter rates vary with time of day and use it to get ahead on grinding \_()_/

Dunsparce's only use in actual battling is I've seen like a serene grace/headbutt stunlock setup but his stats are bad

If your Dunsparce has Serene Grace (doubles the rate at which special effects kick in) then you should use it as a wacky gimmick Pokmon with things like 60% flinch from Headbutt and 20% all-stats-up on AncientPower. If it has Run Away, then sadly, it is just a generic Normal type.

I fondly recall training up a Rock Slide wielding DOOMSPARCE for use in 2v2s against my cousins (with Trick Room support). There are better ways to win, but Dunsparce is a mighty fine way to make people say "What generation is that even from? I don't recognize it, like, at all."

Pidgeotto - 60 Base Attack
Onix - 45 Base Attack
Pidgey - 45 Base Attack

Pidgeotto actually has higher everything except Defense compare to Onix.
