Disagree with that. I think it's fine to think that Franken's conduct didn't rise to the level where he should have resigned (or that he shouldn't have done so before an investigation), but he put himself in that position with his actions. Gillibrand thought that behavior was past the line, and it's not right to blame her for the consequences of Franken's misconduct.

(And I say that as someone who is generally lukewarm on Gillibrand and who generally liked Franken prior to those stories coming out).

Even if you think Franken resigning was the right thing (And I don't even disagree with that), if you think that Gillibrand didn't lead that charge specifically to raise her profile in anticipation of a 2020 presidential run, you're missing the point.

Ergo, I am not particularly sad to see her drop out

I'm not sad to see drop out either, but it's not really clear to me that she went after Franken just for political points. She has a history of working on legislation to help victims of sexual assault (in the military in particular, iirc); I doubt she was secretly totally fine with Franken's alleged behavior.

There's an absolutely massive amount of ground between "I am secretly fine with this" and "I am going to lead a push for immediate resignation that defies all convention and denies the accused an ethics investigation that was already approved and going to happen so that I come out looking politically really good"

It makes it slightly better, I think, but I don't know enough about Georgia to know if they have a good candidate sitting around.

Stacey Abrams came absurdly close in 2018 to the governor against a good republican candidate (in a wave election but still) and she ran pretty far to the left which isn't how you usually see flips like this (Virginia threw out two moderate Dems to get those senate seats and you can see Arizona almost doing the same thing). Now, she did an absurdly good job getting out the vote that I don't think anyone else in Georgia could do.

I would trust Georgia to flip when I see it, but a retiring senator + the right candidate (I dunno if that is Abrams or someone more moderate yet) + the right candidate at the top of the ticket might make it maybe possibly in play. Democrats have thought Georgia has been in play for like ten years now and it always breaks their hearts though.

So my initial gut reaction is "good news but probably not good enough news to give Dems a real shot unless Georgia Roy Moores itself in the foot".

Abrams said she isn't running for either seat, hasn't she? I doubt either flip but with a big enough landslide ANYTHING IS POSSIBLEEEEEEEEEEEE

But really I imagine both seats stay Republican.

Yes Abrams took herself out a long while back, sorry if that wasn't clear.

What I was musing is if that is bad for democrats (considering how good she did turning out the vote last time) or good for democrats (considering recent history indicating you need someone more moderate when a state is on the cusp like this). I'd probably say bad as I think Abrams was uniquely good at getting votes out, but I dunno for sure.

So is there any legal limitation on how long the Queen can prorogue Parliament? If she didn't like the results of an election, could she in theory prorogue it for 4 years 11 months and 29 days, so that that Parliament couldn't do anything and the Queen (or the prime minister advising the Queen) would rule from the throne for that 5-year period?
