Like, there was never a point in English or French history where in their homelands there were both A.) Unclaimed areas to conquer and B.) Guns with which to do so

Where was all this unclaimed land in America, and if it was "unclaimed" why did people need guns to "conquer" them?

Im looking at it from the colonists perspective. Native American history has little to no impact on the development of American culture, sadly

Of course I think youd have to be disturbed to realistically want to kill a mass number of people.

Were the 9/11 bombers disturbed?

I would say clearly yes. But disturbed doesnt mean mentally ill.

Well, I meant mentally ill.

So it seems like the reason why gun violence is so high in the US is because:

1). It's baked into our colonial culture
2). We have very liberal gun laws

#2 is a natural (and Constitutional) right, so nothing will change there. So the only way to stop gun violence then is a massive cultural sea change. I have no idea how to go about doing that.

It takes generations honestly. And this is one of the ways video games are somewhat responsible. They dont make individual people more violent, but many do glorify gun violence in such a way that contributes to our cultural love of it.

But then that begs the question: is it worth giving up the unique culture of the United States--one that makes movies like John Wick, video games like DOOM, albums like The Chronic--in order to maybe save a few hundred lives a year?

Cultures as an ephemeral concept have no right to exist divorced from the people who comprise them. This is the same argument I used to have with Vlado all the time. Yes, PRESERVING culture is important, but there is no inherent value in PERPETUATING cultures like the core of his beliefs dictates.

Honestly I think step 1 in a million step process towards moving our culture away from glorifying gun violence is Splatoon. Same great gameplay that comes from a well-crafted shooter, but completely non-violent.

I don't think "colonial" is the right term here- we don't see this in other British colonies.

But we need to address the hopelessness and lack of opportunity so many people see in this country. This is something the New Deal actually got right (although it poisoned a lot of our republican (small r) institutions). People got a chance to improve their lot in life through work. And when they got paid, they could invest their earnings - the stock market had just fallen 89%, real estate had crashed, there was lots of opportunity to invest.

Nowadays, even as the job market has come back, there is nowhere good to invest - the stock market is at record highs having recovered from the 2008 crash very quickly, before the common man got back on his feet. The government tries to force people to invest in stocks by lowering interest rates to the point where there's no point to investing in anything else.

I think Trump can see the problem and hopefully he will have the wisdom, with our Republican members of Congress, to take action.

Are there any limits on gun laws you would be alright with?

Freedom of speech has restrictions. Hell, right to bear arms has restrictions already. I can't own a bazooka, and no matter how much I beg I need it for home defense the government will not let me buy a tank.

Why not further restrict the kind of guns civilians can own?

Because it's a natural right to own a weapon that would defend your family from a mob. I truly do not think that can be reconciled with the kinds of laws that might actually prevent mass shootings (meaning you'd have to ban every semi-automatic weapon, which would be a violation of said right).

https://twitter.com/paulkrugman/status/1158501573347237890

Krugman (Nobel Prize winner in Economics for those unaware) saying here that while China was a currency manipulator back in 2010-2011, at present, if anything they're keeping their currency artificially high... which is the exact opposite of what Trump has complained about.

His take matches up with other reporting on it I've seen in WaPo, etc. with the added opinions/analysis of economists saying that it's market forces pushing China's currency down right now, not China themselves. China simply stopped resisting those forces when Trump decided to throw more tariffs at them last week and let it drop below the level they were forcing it above.

but i have no idea about any of this personally, but i defer to their expertise

I'm a little surprised that it's literally as low as 2% improved given that I assume a nonneglible segment of voters want the nominee to be more moderate than Warren/Sanders, but the heavy net negative is generally what I would have guessed; I can definitely see how he would irritate people even if they generally agreed with him on policy.
