Poll of the Day > So, how are pineapples profitable?

I must be missing something here.

A pineapple plant takes a year, sometimes a year and a half to grow a fully grown pineapple.

And they sell them for a few bucks right?

That doesn't seem like much for something that takes a very long time to produce.

I know plantations have thousands and thousands of plants, but damn one fruit like the pineapple takes a year to grow.

I watched a couple of videos from Dole and they harvest thousands of pineapples every day. And I don't really understand how they have enough space on their plantation to harvest pineapples every single day.

I feel like I'm missing something.

Oh and I'm asking about pineapples because I planted the top of a pineapple and hope to successfully grow a pineapple within a year and a half.

I'm sure the fact that they are fairly tough fruit helps tremendously, they aren't too heavy either so they're easy to ship, likely helps keep costs down.

Nobody tell him how long it takes to grow an avocado, his head might explode.

Don't even mention apples...zzz

Yes, but it seems to me like growing a single fruit for a year and to be sold for a few bucks isn't profitable. I realize they harvest millions but damn. Don't even get me started on packing and shipping.

Yeah, I would be a terrible businessman.

I googled avocados. But I'm assuming they produce a lot of fruit.

Still, a long time.

Im not as patient as I thought I was. Maybe I just need to give it some time. Im just so fascinated with gardening lately but it takes a long time to grow fruit and vegetables.

Not like it takes much effort to grow them. The real expense tends to be picking and distribution, but shipping in bulk keeps the costs down.

When I lived in Miami, we had mango trees in our yard. Every year, a group of guys would come by and pay us for the right to harvest our trees. The trees had no upkeep costs, so it was just free money every year. Really good deal for us since otherwise we'd have to clean up the fruit after it fell from the tree. Up north, the only thing that grows in my yard is blackberries and those damn deer steal most of them.

In general, all fruits and vegetables have a growing period, so that's just the nature of the industry.

THAT IS IT!!

I forgot we had a blackberry bush in our back yard!! Thank you!!

Last night, I got hungry at 3 am and decided to hit a place that is open to 4 am for some food. It was mega foggy (crazy thick) and as I'm pulling out of my yard, I almost hit 3 deer ad the crossed the road and went into my back yard.

Now I know why, there is a blackberry bush back there. I bet if I look tomorrow I will see they ate a bunch of them (damn I was gonna eat them, but I think it's gotten to cold now so they are probably mostly dead.....I totally forgot to pick them oops).

Also fruits/veggies etc, are normally alot of effort to grow, but we use a ton of land etc to do it, and once you actually set it all up, it's mainly just the cost to harvest and ship that you pay for, the actual fruit doesn't cost much at all. Also a full Pineapple isn't really that cheap either (much cheaper to just buy slices etc).

Why don't you eat the mangoes? Or are you just tired of them?

I have a lemon tree in the backyard and don't really use them.

It seems like it's a lot of work for just a few bucks per fruit. I mean, you can to factor in the cost of water, labor, etc. I don't know, I'm just having a hard time grasping this information. lol I mean, I know pineapples are profitable otherwise no one would grow and sell them.

You really can't underestimate ease of shipping, it's a major cost savings. With many fruits they expect during shipping a good number of the product will be bruised or damaged and no longer be considered in acceptable condition for sale, instead they're discounted for more processed foods.

Pineapple shipping well really would have very significant savings, I imagine very few get damaged and end up needing to be sold at a hefty discount.

Because there were a lot of fucking mangoes. Hell, just one tree is a lot of fucking mangoes. The only way you might be able to keep up is eating multiple mangoes at every meal. Do you like mangoes that much? Because there's no fruit I like that much. I'm not sure there's any meat I like that much.

you're probably missing the huge amount of land area that's devoted to farming.

pick a city (in a temperate climate) and look it up on google maps sattelite mode, zoom out, and then scroll to what surrounds the city. the never ending patchwork-quilt of green and brown squares and rectangles are farms.

(won't work everywhere. desert areas will just have never ending desert. super-urban areas will just have never ending city. mountainous areas will just have never ending wilderness. etc.)
