I think me going Cornette on Yano would be to say he's actually terrible and/or bad for NJPW/wrestling as a whole.

Yano's very good at what he does and the crowd loves him, and thus he has good value for New Japan. And there certainly are still times I get a kick out of his antics. But I don't really need to see 9 singles matches from him in the space of a month.

Next week on Smackdown, Baron Corbin's dick kicking tactics determine who gets to challenge The Great Khali and the Singh Brothers (featuring their manager, Jinder Mahal) in a 3 on 1 handicap match for the WWE title

But seriously-- I may not watch as much New Japan as you, but I don't think I could ever get bored of Yano. I find his matches LESS formulaic than a lot of wrestlers. Hell even when he does the same trick a few times (in ROH last year he was overusing hitting dudes with a turnbuckle pad) I can still get into his matches.

Hell, Yano vs AJ Styles was actually one of my favorite matches in the Climax two years ago. And while I didn't see near all of it I saw a decent amount between watching part live and watching matches after the fact.

He's a great man.

No NJPW is not like CHIKARA

You may be thinking of DDT

Yano's just a joke guy that exists in NJPW and does it without it seeming super out of place (mostly because, as I said, it's usually significantly more subtle than that clip-- though yeah given the opponent it still kinda works). Because he's great.

Hey, I recognize I'm in the minority here.

But as you pointed out, I watch a LOT of New Japan. When I was just getting into the company, I loved Yano too. But eventually I got to the point where I'm not really looking for comedy out of NJPW except on rare occasion, even if you're as good at it as Yano is. I have PWG and PROGRESS and other companies here and there for comedy. I go to New Japan for workrate.

You can't assume everybody who watches NJPW also watches Progress and PWG though. NJPW fans need their comedy fix too.

Well I mean I don't think he's something I'm going to 'grow out of' even as I watch more New Japan or anything. I don't watch a ton of it (time + effort barrier) but I watch enough to have a reasonable familiarity with the product and the rosters-- hell I think I've been a subscriber to NJPW World for as many months total as I've been a paid subscriber to the WWE Network. Yano, Ishii, and Naito are far and away the top 3 for me.

On that note I'm actually not a huge fan of oversaturation of comedy in wrestling feds. It can become tiresome-- can only watch the truly ridiculous stuff in bursts. I much much prefer a serious fed with very sparing use of comedy elements. That he's a comedy guy in a primarily non-comedy product and is able to be taken as vaguely credible is the appeal to me.

Anyway this has sorta gone off on a tangent due to not liking the connations behind "when I was just getting into the company" but yeah I'm just saying I don't think it's a bad thing to put a bit of variety in the product as long as you don't overdo it. Seen much much more distracting things in NJPW before in the past, like a 70 year old Abdullah the Butcher on one of the Wrestle Kingdom shows in a match.

Elgin being in the G1 is the one to be upset about imhhhho.

I don't assume that. I made like three or four posts in which I mentioned that he's valuable to the company even if he's not personally my taste.

I didn't intend that to mean anything more than what it looks like on the surface, but I can see how you might construe it that way. It was just meant to be a personal admission that I got tired of him. I totally get why other people don't tire of him the same way.

I don't know what you've got against Elgin, though. He had the best or maybe second-best match of the tournament so far this year.

I will be honest I haven't seen any of the current G1 yet but I've always thought Elgin was pretty bad. Maybe he's turned it around in a big way-- but I'm pretty sure you've been defending him for a while so I'm skeptical I'd be agreeing with that.

I'll probably know in a few months! (Which match was it btw since I don't think I'll be watching it front to back)

vs Okada on Night 4. If you didn't care for him before, though, I won't be surprised if it doesn't connect with you.

Also, it might help to get my point across about Yano to mention that I didn't care for Nakamura a lot of the time while he was in NJPW either because he had such a habit of dogging it in all but the biggest matches. I skipped a fair amount of his G1 stuff as well. It's not just comedy that doesn't do it for me sometimes, laziness can take away from matches as well. But I would never question someone loving Nakamura or denying that he was huge for the company while he was still there.
