No idea. How are they, compared to Dresden?
There is actually only one so far. It's set in a sort of post-apocalyptic fantasy world where everyone lives in these giant towers called Spires because the surface of the Earth has been rendered uninhabitable. There are flying ships, magic (very different from the Dresden files), talking cats, and lots of monsters. The writing isn't as advanced as later Dresden books are, but I loved it.

What is the rationale behind supporting things like this? With tactics like this, nobody knows if the unmarked van that comes for them is police or kidnappers. You don't think human traffickers operate this way? There is no excuse for the lack of transparency either. If you have enough evidence to arrest someone, wear a uniform with identification read the suspect their rights, and arrest them. Stuffing people into vans is 3rd world dictatorship shit.

Just don't break any laws, and the strange men in the unmarked vans (some of which might not even be any kind of law enforcement) won't come for you? Stop and think about this for a minute. Really think about it.

I don't think it was OK. I'm not aware of any federal or state law that requires ordinary citizens to actively search for and report potentially counterfeit money. Any time people interact with police--whether you are suspected of wrongdoing or not--they are inviting possible trouble. It is standard legal advice in the US to never speak to the police. What is the best thing that can happen to you if you talk to an officer? They don't arrest you, that's what. Unless you are the victim of a serious crime (say, you've been burglarized and need to file a report) what great benefit is there to calling the police? Call if you have to, speak if you have to, but otherwise don't.

In some states, you can be arrested for wasting an officer's time.

What evidence is there to support the assertion that "Porn is poisoning the minds of youths around America"? It's already illegal for minors to view pornographic content anyway. What are you going to do, make it twice as illegal? A ban on porn would be a violation of the 1st Amendment. Moreover, it would also be completely pointless. Either the law would never be enforced, or it would be enforced often enough that our already overcrowded jails and prisons began to overflow with non-violent offenders.

Prohibition of things people commonly use is doomed to fail and does nothing but create misery.

For those who had a tough time with the first couple of books, yeah, maybe just read the wiki recaps. It gets better starting at book 3 and Butcher really hits his stride at books 4 and 5. I think his writing improves a lot then and the characters become much more tolerable and the fantasy world becomes much more expanded upon which was gravely missing from the first two books.
I agree with this. If I hadn't bought several at the same time and been told over and over it gets better, I would have given up on the series.

Not clicking Twitter. What exactly is the argument against porn that doesn't involve real people engaging in sex? Nothing you can do to a cartoon character hurts a real person. In terms of voice acting, some dubs for dark material had the script changed for actor comfort, and I believe people generally just had fun with it because it is ridiculous.

EARN IT would give broad powers to the AG and a new commission headed overwhelmingly by those with a law enforcement background to shape rules for how the internet works. The initial draft of the bill specifies that the rules will at least have to include things like mandatory data retention and age gating for websites, and also for "rating" the severity of abuse material, which suggests the possibility of out and out censorship (possibly a swipe at regular porn?), and more. The bill tries to duck being an unconstitutional piece of garbage by claiming that the guidelines the committee makes (whatever the hell those will end up being) will be optional. But websites that don't comply with the "optional" guidelines lose Section 230 protections and are liable for everything users say and do.

The recommendations spawned by the EARN IT Act won't become law until they Congress approves them, but that approval is all but guaranteed because the resulting bill is to be fast-tracked per EARN IT, and would be all but impossible to vote no for. EARN IT gives the committee a huge level of freedom to make up any kind of rule it likes as long as they can say it would help protect children from exploitation. And we already know that the DOJ opposes encryption and the need for warrants at all for user data.

It is also worth noting that Section 230 has never protected providers from having to report child abuse material they find. In other words, his law has absolutely nothing to do with protecting children and helping stop child abuse, because every website is already obligated to, under penalty of law. EARN IT is just a giant power grab that doesn't stand up to any kind of scrutiny.

But how much of that suffering do we bring upon ourselves? As they say, you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make them drink.
But how many people with terminal cancer can God fix? How many severed spinal cords and broken necks can God fix? How many cases of ALS can God cure? The answer: all of them! How many actually get fixed? None! Not even the most fervent believers of any given religion receive what would be genuine miracles, and neither do heroes and moral paragons. If God knows all that can be known, then he can teach us to be better than we are. If God is all powerful, than he can in a single instant perform a gigantic miracle and erase whole classifications of human suffering that humans can't erase for themselves. Yet he does nothing. Either he doesn't exist, or he is a gigantic ass.

Did God make us? Then he has some responsibility for how we turn out. If he didn't make us, I still can't imagine what divine morality would have to look like for him to do nothing for us. It's no good passing the buck to humans in either case, though. For most of our history, humans lived a hand to mouth existence as hunters and gatherers, with no advanced science or technology. How could we have done better for ourselves? Electricity wasn't invented until 1879. Until around 1840, only the rich had indoor plumbing. Modern living--and all of the luxuries it offers, like time to think and widespread education--is incredible recent. Life sucked for most people for most of history, and even still, there have always been altruistic people working to make things right. Most people are in no position to do big things like stop wars or cure diseases or fix social problems.

How is humanity sucking the fault of the common people, or even the species itself? If God is all-knowing and all-powerful (or even anything close to such grandeur), what can it cost him to help us? Haven't you ever given money to a needy family or a homeless person in your community? An all-powerful, supposedly good God can't give even display something as simple as basic charity, to at least a chosen few?

Is this really the first time a someone has been falsely arrested due to facial recognition in America? Given how poorly it works (look up the appalling UK failure rate), I'm surprised this happened. Given how flimsy the evidence was, I'd say racial bias was definitely in play. And what was up with the police phoning the guy to tell him to come in and be arrested? Is that something police actually do? It sounds like a setup to justify sending officers to follow him home for further intimidation.

If you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear.
Everyone has things they want to hide: banking details, private conversations, medical information, etc. The cases in which not being able to access encrypted information has seriously hindered an investigation are a lot fewer in number than the FBI claims (they were called out for this lie after an investigation). Take the FBI's beef with Apple as an example. Apple specifically doesn't encrypt iCloud backup information by default in deference to law enforcement concerns. They can and do provide any unencrypted data they have when served a warrant. They can get text and call data straight from the phone company. And to top it all off, they lied to the public about what they wanted.

"If you called 911 and needed help, how would you like it if no one was there for you?"
I hate arguments like that. Nobody is arguing that law enforcement isn't needed. The problem is that bad officers are protected by the union, fellow officers, prosecutors, judges, and sometimes even the laws themselves. Apparently the official police report for George Floyd's death stated that there was a "medical issue", with no mention made of one cop murdering him while several others enabled the behavior. To say nothing of the people who get framed for crimes or arrested for things that aren't actually crimes. The public never hears about most cases of misconduct, and even with they do, officers are hardly ever punished. When the are, the punishments are light and the police in general are indignant that there was any punishment of a fellow officer at all.

That just isn't how things should be. Nothing about the job of being a cop necessitates any of this BS protection they get. American soldiers in war zones constantly risk debilitating injury and loss of life, and they are held to far higher standards of conduct than police are. And when soldiers do mess up, military justice is harsher than regular criminal justice. There is no reason for this to not be the case for police too.

I legitimately don't understand the pro-police perspective with regards to reform. Who the hell wants to live in a world where police can do whatever they like to you with impunity? If your mentor or friend or spouse is a cop and you support them because they are good people, great! By getting rid of ridiculous police powers and protection, the good cops will no longer be forced to choose between having a job and saving someone from being murdered or having evidence planted and losing years of life for nothing. Any good cop that doesn't agree with huge police reforms either isn't really a good person, or has been fortunate enough to never see police corruption ruin lives. There is no downside for good cops if strong police reforms get passed, because it can only make being a good person easier.

Once we get done reforming police, we can start on the corrupt judges and prosecutors. Sensible laws to eliminate minor crimes and unclog the prisons and courts would be sweet too. It's time to make America great again...for real this time OK? There is no reason our country has to look like this.
