Interesting that there are two sets of diametrically opposed opinions! While I appreciate the note about adjusting the sensitivity, do you think the game becomes less bland and more interesting as it opens up?

I've played for around 40 minutes and just got the first Chaos Emerald. The setting is cool and from what little I've seen of the characters, they feel right. But everything else about the game feels wrong to me. The way Sonic moves is too slippery for comfortably fighting the big boss type enemies, and the platforming is atrocious, especially with the pop-in. The world doesn't feel too much like Sonic's either: it's like somebody made an Unreal terrain demo and plopped down some rings, springs, and rails. The "cyber space" stages are way too short. It's like the day stages from Unleashed, but worse.

Thoughts?

I mentioned this in my other topic, but I'd like to bring it up here too: the EARN IT Act would create an unelected committee of law enforcement experts to make the rules companies would have to follow. The rules can basically be anything as long as they are tied in some way to preventing child exploitation. As of late, Republicans have been trying to tie being gay or transgender to sexual deviancy at the state level. EARN IT could in the future be leveraged the same way to stifle discussion of issues or even target gay and transgender people.

It's important to realize just how dangerous this legislation is.

The whole point of repeatedly introducing legislation like this is to seed the idea that they aren't doing this already, in violation of many, many laws and not to mention the Constitution itself.
Not to downplay the severity of the violation of our rights by the government and police every day--because that is a big deal and is totally unconstitutional--but the point of continually pushing legislation like this is to get it passed to create structural changes and give the government more power. They wouldn't be trying so hard if they didn't want this. Last time they tried a speed run, and this time it was introduced, circulated, and marked up without the text of the bill being available for the public to view. They want it bad, and possibly for reasons we can't guess just now.

Also, before anyone says anything about Republicans or Democrats, EARN IT has sadly always been bipartisan legislation.

It's one of those, yes. The scuttlebutt on some tech news sites is that EARN IT has a friend this time, but the text of that bill is unavailable at this time (at least where I checked). Rumor is that proponents are planning on passing both and one other "save the kids" bill this Summer in rapid succession. Apparently they started marking up EARN IT without even releasing the text this time. They are getting sneakier, and they know this isn't popular.

This law is the United States' version of the idea that the government and police need mandatory access to all forms of communications without a warrant, only with some extra sugar coating. EARN IT has died a quiet death twice before amidst huge public backlash. We'll see if we get lucky a third time.

There definitely should be some sort of free fast-track program for recovering addicts to VERY quickly get you into a good job with fair pay. Many people I know were addicts in the first place over the fact that nobody wants to pay anymore.
No. There should a government mandated shift toward requiring employers to pay everyone fairly. Absolutely everyone needs a good job with fair pay (as you yourself said, many addicts became addicts in the first place because of poor pay). I mean, it's great that someone is beating an addiction, but everyone needs a decent job that provides enough money to live on. There are an insane number of people packed in with extended relatives because even couples with dual incomes and no kids can't afford rent or food. It's a society-wide problem right now the world over.

It might make sense to add recovering addict to the class of people that can't be discriminated against for housing or hiring, but that will only do so much good. Workers don't have many rights in the US, and it can be hard to prove you were discriminated against. Disabled people are treated like garbage because they aren't "useful"; old people get a dose of the same. Racism and bigotry need no explanation. And in the minds of the citizenry, felons and ex-cons are never done paying their debt to society no matter what they've done or how they've changed.

Ultimately, we need some kind of big shake up in society and the government to make things fairer and more equitable.

I think substance abuse, severe mental illness, and homelessness all garner mixed reactions because many people have very negative first-hand or second-hand experiences of them. Being homeless is terrible, and there are plenty of chill homeless folks that nobody minds; it's the aggressive, scary ones people think of. Same with drugs: are you down on your luck trying to get clean, or are you lying and manipulative? Most people don't care about drinking because it's common, but in people's minds alcoholism is often related to violence or a lack of dependability.

It can be hard to have sympathy for someone if you think they might be dangerous or hurt you in some way. It's not fair to lump everyone from any group together like that, but human nature is kind of hard to overcome.

The first thing in existence or the big bang pretty much did though. So if the big bang indirectly created us as a consequence then it can happen again for an infinite amount of times. I don't see any way around it. There may no such thing as "non-existence" even. So we are stuck existing.
Are you trying to say that the universe is, over time, continually destroyed and recreated, and therefore we are destined to live again? Nobody knows what caused the Big Bang, and as far as I know, there is no real evidence for a cycle of any kind. But even if there is some kind of cycle of creation and destruction as far as the universe is concerned, that has nothing to do with us personally. Quantum mechanics completely destroys the idea that we live in deterministic universe. If the universe gets "rebooted", it won't be a loop; different things will happen.

And what good would it do you if the universe actually was some kind of loop where the same things really did happen each time, right down to the same people being born? If there is nothing like a soul, then our existence as thinking beings is the result of biological processes in the brain. When the brain dies, we die. So in the case of a loop, there will uncounted years in the future be another you born. What of it? That would just be a new instance of a similar (or even identical) version of a person that looks like you and has your personality. There is no continuity of being, any more than if I someone created a machine that could make a perfect duplicate of you.

I do sympathize. Like, nature is great and all, but it sucks when you've got a pest problem that won't go away. Last year I went like a week where my house and the surrounding area were full of those huge, black flies. I killed so many that my arms got tired. One Summer there were so many mosquitoes in my area that if you sat parked in a vehicle, the air shimmered and you could hear the buzzing. I've also had ants so bad that you can lay down a thick coat of taro and come back a couple of hours later to empty cardboard.

darkmaian23

I have relatives who would periodically suffer bouts of psychosis, and a friend who did as well. Nobody is going to have quite the same experience--and at this point you don't even have an exact diagnosis--but there are few things I'd like to share.

  1. Make sure you are safe at all times. Should she ever turn violent, she might turn out to be stronger than you, or employ a weapon of some kind, or have the element of surprise by virtue of snapping suddenly. If you keep guns around, get rid of them or lock them up. And if you experience even one genuinely violent psychotic episode, walk away and don't get lured back.
  2. Watch out for yourself. It seems like you and her parents are on the same page, but that's subject to change at any time. Once she gets out of the psych ward, you could become the subject of damaging things that are not violent: hidden surveillance, damaging stories, false police reports, money troubles, etc.
  3. Make sure you have a bug out plan. I hope she gets better and that your relationship thrives, but take practical steps in case that doesn't happen. If you live together, can you get your own place or separate from her quickly if need be? You said she doesn't work, but is she a source of other income you need (like maybe she gets disability)? Do you have a kid together (don't have one if you don't until you are sure she responds to treatment)? In other words, be ready to pull the eject lever if it comes to that.
I'm not at all trying to demonize people who suffer from psychosis, but you can end up in some very scary and dangerous situations out of nowhere. I don't often talk much about my own situation--and I certainly won't in a topic about someone else's problems--but some days I look back and I'm surprised I'm still alive. Be the good person that you obviously are, but look out for yourself too.
