I'm not familiar with EU politics as a whole, but I'd read that every part of this bill besides the two problematic articles was fine and that updating copyright law was going to get done regardless. So, maybe they actually want some time to excise the evil and then pass it? I'd like to believe that. DarthWendy posted... JE19426 posted...It's been voted down by the European Parliment. May I ask where your optimism comes from? Not many EU citizens chimed in on any forum I visited, and here in the US, I was quite nervous that it might have a chance. |

darkmaian23 07/04/18 3:02:19 PM #62 | Hexenherz posted... I'm curious what people are concretely afraid of with the passing of this legislation. @Hexenherz 1. Elimination of fair use. 2. Death of privacy. If software must scan everything that is uploaded to a server in the EU, a great deal of privacy simply vanishes immediately. 3. There is no mechanism for redressing complaints. They just assume businesses will act in good faith when there are false positives. 4. It just won't work like it's supposed to. There is no database anywhere in the world of "all the copyrighted content", and no existing software comes close to doing what the relevant article would demand. Because the companies hosting content are the ones liable, this may well change the shape of the internet as we know it. 5. It's logical to assume that once the system is in place to check for copyright violations (no matter how poorly it works), it will be expanded to other things like illegal speech, images, etc. The effect on free speech would be huge, and do you really want an automated system looking at everything you put online to see if it's illegal? It'll be just lovely getting a knock on the door for uploading something benign that got flagged mistakenly by the (almost certain to be shitty) software. 6. Expanding on #5, even if you assume amazing software will be developed that won't make mistakes, and even if you assume law enforcement will do their due diligence and check to make sure you actually did something wrong, what's legal and what isn't changes over time. Once the system is in place for copyright, it'll be expanded to illegal content and speech. All that's left is for more and more political ideologies to be deemed "hateful", and both democracy and free thought in the EU will be well and truly dead. 7. The EU passing this kind of legislation sets a precedent that will sooner or later be followed elsewhere in the world. |

Topic | School bans Parents from viewing pro-LGBT Videos they showed to kids |
darkmaian23 07/02/18 11:52:28 AM #161 | Privacy is one of the things I value most, but I'm not sure it makes sense in this context. The entire school was shown these videos, and there have been complaints from students that what they were shown was inappropriate. I grew up in a small town, and parents were always interested in what was going on at school and involved themselves when they felt it was necessary. Out of the hundreds of people who saw the videos, most of them would have been strangers to the students involved in the project. Why does privacy apply in this case? Is it because the content is pro-LGBT and you feel the involved students merit special protection? If it were a sensitive matter for the involved students--for example, they are afraid of being bullied our outed--they could not have had their works shown to the entire school. Is it because the content is pro-LGBT and you assume it must be morally correct? It might actually be repugnant, and you'd never know since you can't see it. Is it because you don't like or trust the group bringing the lawsuit? What matters is the merit of the case, not who is bringing it. On the side for disclosure, the parents are getting (likely free) legal representation; on the side of those opposed, the nature of the group doing the representing might make the case be taken less seriously. I'm completely on the side of LGBT rights, and if I had a child who felt very strongly that they were being exposed to mandatory inappropriate content in school and were bothered by it, I too would demand to see the content for myself. I don't know a single parent who wouldn't do the same for their child if they thought it was serious. Secret evidence makes it impossible to know whether anything bad has taken place, and under the circumstances, I can't consider the school's position reasonable. Maybe if it were a student project show to a handful of students, but if it was shown to the entire school and was mandatory, that's something else entirely. |

darkmaian23 07/01/18 8:57:26 PM #21 | I just saw this very link posted on another website, and was coming to CE to post a topic. Is Patreon lying? Is it just a couple of payment processors? I'm kind of worried this will end up tanking all forms of online porn if this is real and because of FOSTA or something. I support artists on Patreon, and now I feel like I have to reconsider that. I wonder if they'll start going after companies that sell visual novels, or anime streaming sites for ecchi content? Ick. |

Topic | How do you feel about the Amazon Echo? |
darkmaian23 06/30/18 2:19:07 AM #1 | I am completely against all of the home assistants. It's not paranoia about the government (though Amazon won't say whether they cooperate with or receive requests to use the Echo for wiretapping), it's about the very issue that people are buy low cost devices that sit in a room and can hear everything you say in the privacy of your own home. Currently, all signs point to Amazon not recording more than it claims to, and you do have the ability to see what has been recorded and delete what you don't like. But that could change at any time. Once, Windows didn't monitor everything you do with telemetry. From this angle, the low cost kind of bothers me. Beyond Amazon or the government acting in bad faith, there is the real problem of hacking. Internet of Things (IoT) devices are notoriously insecure, and the Echo could easily be turned into a listening device by hackers in the future. Because speech to text is a thing, they wouldn't even need to choose you as a target specifically. A large number of Echos could be hacked and mined for juicy data without any direct interest in you personally. I also don't see that they add much value, especially considering the risks involved. What do you guys think? |

darkmaian23 06/30/18 1:23:45 AM #13 | DoctorPiranha3 posted... It's almost insanity how people are so anti Rare. They always beat Nintendo at their own game. DKC, DKR, BK, etc. Are you suggesting you think Donkey Kong Country was better than Super Mario World or Yoshi's Island? Banjo had it's own charm, and I can see someone liking it better than Super Mario 64, but to claim that Rare bested Nintendo on the SNES is absolutely insane. |
Topic | Book of Revelation was written around 2,000 years ago. |
darkmaian23 06/30/18 1:19:29 AM #5 | Revelation 13 (NIV) It also forced all people, great and small, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or on their foreheads, so that they could not buy or sell unless they had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of its name. China has been pushing cashless payment with phones for some time now. This is part of a move towards social credit, where an app will monitor everything a Chinese citizens does and spends their money on, and gives them an overall score. Associating with people who have low social credit will lower your score. Punishments like restricting travel for those with low scores have been talked about it. It's not just China either. In addition to facilitating the move toward a cashless economy in many parts of the world, owning a smartphone has become mandatory for many people for their jobs, and there is an increasing push to move services to phone apps for convenience. Phones can be--and have been--used to track people by governments, and many private apps openly violate users' privacy. For example, a popular Spanish soccer app actively listened through the microphone to try and detect copyright violations. If the mark of the beast is real and can be a physical object like a microchip, it's much more likely to be a cellphone, wouldn't you say? Though I doubt a preacher would be popular if he spread that message. Everybody likes their cellphones. |

darkmaian23 06/30/18 1:03:55 AM #11 | Mario 64 is the gold standard for 3D platformers. Banjo was a fine attempt, but there were a ton of little things that weren't fun or didn't feel right that dragged the game down. Mario 64 was a 10/10 at release, and is still a 10/10 if you can get past the graphics. Some of the stars were frustrating, and there were levels I didn't like, but everything was perfectly executed. |

darkmaian23 06/24/18 11:33:37 PM #15 | NeonOctopus posted... tl;dw? This has been covered elsewhere in written form too. The legislation would require that all content uploaded to the internet be checked for copyright violations, with websites being liable if anything slips through. It's unclear if attempts at automatically detecting and censoring other types of content will be undertaken. Fees for linking to news stories (and other content?) is also a part of it. http://www.bbc.com/news/amp/technology-44546620 |

Even then 40's are not that old either. That's a lie you're telling yourself because you are in your 30s now. I see older relatives do it all the time. The older they get, the higher the threshold for old becomes. I doubt your 18 year old self (who is now separated from you by 14 years of time) would agree that you aren't past your prime until 40. And lest you think I'm being mean, I'm not much younger than you. Getting old always feels like it's a problem for someone else. |
