Sure, under any context where he would be justified in hitting a man.

This, which pretty much exclusively means in a legitimate self-defense context (legitimate self-defense being more than just "you hit me so I'll hit you back"), aside from formal sparring. Statistically, that's going to mean there are more men against whom violence would be justified than women, since men are stronger on average and therefore more likely to pose a legitimate threat, but the same logic should be applied in choosing to respond with violence.

You can, but that almost definitely won't do what you want. Play the stereo version through headphones, and try taking off one of them. The part you hear out of the side you're still wearing is one of the tracks you could split it into, with the other playing through the side you took off. Odds are, both will have vocals.

Are you really letting the law define your concept of responsible driving? Pay attention, and if somebody who isn't paying attention causes a problem, blame them. Don't blame people who did nothing that would have been dangerous if you'd just paid attention. That's just plain common sense.

I'm failing to see how a socialist system would increase the push for automation more than a capitalist one. Private companies, being more concerned about profit, will be the first to push for more automation.

In both cases, the push for automation happens because automation will be cheaper than employing people to do it. Under the current system, people are willing to work crappy jobs for very little because they need to eat, and minimum wage is better than nothing, so employing people is relatively cheap and there isn't as much incentive to develop an automated solution. When nobody wants to do the job unless you pay well and/or sink money into improving it, though, employing people becomes much more expensive, and developing an automated solution becomes a much higher priority (that, or the position will just be eliminated altogether, making for a more efficient system).

In both cases, automation will happen eventually, as the technology gets cheap enough to replace people, but in the latter case, that happens much sooner because people are more expensive to employ.

But yea, keep pretending that people will just stop giving money to stuff.

The concept of a free market regulating itself works, but only on an infinite scale. Given enough time and enough competitors, bad companies will die out and be succeeded by good companies. The problem is that many services are too essential for people to wait that long, and many fields are so hard to break into that there will never be enough competitors (airlines demonstrate both of these failures).

Yep. Because I'm arguing reality. You're arguing a fantastical utopia. You're arguing what people should do. I'm arguing what people will do

What will happen is that people will stop doing crappy jobs as soon as they have the option to do something they enjoy more without starving, forcing those jobs to become less crappy if people want them done. That's not really a bad thing to force. You'll see an increased push for developing automated systems, improving conditions where automation's too far off, and increased wages that reflect how undesirable the job is and can actually attract people to the position.

Obviously, that ideal's a long way off, but that doesn't mean it isn't worth striving toward. It's absurd to not only accept, but actively defend a paradigm where most people spend a third of their lives being miserable. That shouldn't be necessary.

Probably nothing, yeah. Unfortunately, as in this case, too many women will use the societal bias that sees them as more sympathetic than men and more likely to be a victim to distort the facts and cry wolf to get negative attention thrust upon a man the woman is feuding with or doesn't like.
They ruin it for the actual victims, but I'd feel pretty bad harassing an innocent man because I just assumed the crying female is being honest.

The thing is, the police will sort that out. It's not like he chased down the car himself and wrested the child from the guy's hands, or anything else that would have put him or an innocent person in actual danger. The police have the tools and the training to resolve the situation safely and without further incident, whether the situation is as it first appears or not, so involving them is definitely the right course of action.

streamofthesky posted...
Take this case or any other case where an employee tries to physically stop a shoplifter and is fired for it.

That's largely a liability thing. If the store doesn't have a "don't be a hero" sort of clause in their employment contract, they are legally responsible for any injury their employees sustain trying to stop criminals. As much as that seems like it's punishing people for trying to do something good, nothing a shoplifter can steal is worth the employee endangering themselves like that, so it really is better to not physically intervene.

streamofthesky posted...
I read a week or two ago about some poor guy who found a little girl all alone at a park and went around with her asking people if she was their kid. In which case he should really be pursuing assault and defamation charges. He would likely have been better off reporting the unattended minor to the police than spending more than a few minutes trying to find her parents in the immediate vicinity, but he should still have a pretty solid case against his attackers.

When my sweet tooth struck last night, I decided my Subway cookie wasn't good enough, so I slapped together a cherry compote and put that on some ice cream, crumbled the cookie over top of it, and added whipped cream and chocolate sauce.

This doesn't particularly tie in with established PotD culture, I just felt like sharing.

You have no idea how much money Unbridled might make

It's pretty reasonable to assume he's not a multimillionaire. I'm okay with making reasonable assumptions, especially when it's for the purpose of a statement that's not meant to contribute anything more than dramatic effect.

or, for that matter, how much in taxes they actually pay considering that they're very good at shielding their money.

Which is largely a moot point when you consider the actual crux of what I was saying, which is that the location of these celebrities' homes changes nothing on his end. It doesn't really matter what the actual lost tax numbers are, you're still giving that up in exchange for literally nothing.

More importantly, they'd STILL have to pay taxes if they were starring in films, shows, etc, in the US.

Income taxes, sure, but not sales or property taxes. Again, even if you're not losing all of it, you're losing something and gaining nothing, which is a stupid thing to hope for.

Kind of sad cause I'd GLADLY ditch a bunch of braindead actors, well, basically anywheres if possible

Which is a terribly silly attitude to have. Those "braindead actors" make far more money than you ever will, and pay far more taxes as a result. If you'd rather have that tax income move somewhere else just because you think the person paying it is dumb (when you don't have to interact with them in any way except to see their public appearances, which wouldn't change), that's very much an example of cutting your nose off to spite your face.

Wait, they protested by having large numbers of people show up and order coffee? Giving a business money isn't exactly an effective way to protest them...
