There was a lot during the decade...

Graces F(2010)
Xillia(2013)
Xillia 2(2014)
Zestiria(2015)
Berseria(2016)

I would definitely nominate Berseria because it has one of the best stories I've seen in gaming.

Though the gameplay is a boring slog sometimes.

It also introduced the idea of games constantly updating through patches. The game is truly never complete, and actually evolves with the times. That concept came about thanks to League. I mean, it wasn't the first ever game with a patch, but it certainly was the most influential one.(you could argue for Wow)

It's like you are just listing things that made gaming worse overall.

Incomplete games are a garbage thing that exists to make money for greedy studios.

For better or worse, it introduced the idea of "toxic behavior" and "reported", two issues that went beyond video games as social issues during the decade. The idea of online bullying and censorship...those ideas were given a prime example through the medium of League.

No it didn't, toxic players have existed ever since someone thought of connecting a videogame to the internet. LoL just made it worse.

Finally finished listening to it.

Great episode guys, and thanks for doing this. Really made the contest a way more fun experience to me. And yeah, gratz for Advo, Luster and Axem for winning your side contests.

I'm a little impressed no one mentioned Draven as a turd, though. It's almost like it was too obvious so you guys decided to be more creative or something. Draven is the turd as much as Zelda is the true winner of the context, imo.

Weird how a match could create such a war between xstats lovers and haters.

When the best answer is probably that they are like all other computational engineering methods: they work, as long as there is a human to interpret what the results mean, understand what is actually happening, and analyse if they can be used case by case.

Samus is stronger than Mario among non-nintendo fans, and weaker than Mario among nintendo fans. That much seems obvious now.

I'm still at the halfway point.

I wanna comment on the stuff about GotD2. I agree with Advo. Like him, I don't have much of an interest in the games included, as my gaming input reduced a lot after 2010 (not just because of money, but also college and a gradual change of interests).

But hey, Best Year in Gaming was pretty bad and I enjoyed the fuck out of it. Will probably enjoy this one, because bracket, Crew, Show and all are pretty fun to do and watch. And it can always make me play a few new games. The 2018 contest made me play Berseria and DDLC, for example. I'm not gonna catch up on all mainstream gaming anytime soon, but I check things from time to time.

And yeah, it's a one in ten years thing so we can't simply not do it. It has too much potential for great things to happen (or controversial ones).

Just make sure Link Between Worlds gets nominated, because that's one modern Zelda I played and really liked.

I'd rather Link lose cleanly than lose because of a DDOS. It taints the entire contest.

This match is important but it clearly sucked. It nearly killed contests on the whole. It's important like ET the Extraterrestrian is important for gaming, on how much it damaged the whole thing.

That said I did had a lot of fun for those 24 hours, I just don't think the actual crap that happened was worth it.

40 minutes into the podcast at the moment. I don't sound nowhere near as bad as I thought I would, especially considering the talking part is by far my low point when communicating in English (sometimes I had some slight blackouts and stuttered a bit by not finding the right words to keep it going); but I gotta give props to Ng for saving my opinions for last out of everyone since it gave me some time to elaborate my ideas better. Maybe I would've had the microphone closer so I wouldn't sound so quiet, but overall I really liked the outcome.

I know how you feel. It used to be when I spoke English my mind tried to say something but I felt like my mouth didn't work at the same speed, so I had to speak slowly not to stutter.

But lately it feels like my mouth managed to catch up. I think it was the effect the year I spent in UK in 2014, but also all those years playing online mafia and doing stuff in forums afterwards. Even if I wasn't talking, I feel like my brain got used to thinking in English more efficiently.

Fun fact: in 2013 I tried to listen to The Show but gave up in the first episode because I couldn't understand half of what the guys said. I only tried again this year. Now it's much easier. This stuff is practice and more practice.

Let me just drop this match picture in here.

XFMGKeW

Not enough is made of this picture today. It's the entirety of Nintendo against big dorky Tidus. This match had a stigma for years because of it. Was Melee really the stronger game? Probably. But with a dork like Tidus, you never know.

I remember being really unimpressed by both of these games. Melee got less than 54% on Vice City while FFX, and this one baffles me to this very day, couldn't double Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. What the heck is that? FFX went into this one as the slight fave, but it wasn't overwhelming, and certainly not with that picture.

The match itself wasn't really that close outside of the beginning. Melee started out in the lead, FFX grabbed it overnight and Melee blasted FFX in the day. It was basically your typical Cloud/Link, Nintendo/Square affair. FFX got it under 51 by the end of the match but it was never really in doubt by the time the sun came up.

I can't stress the skepticism that this match drew, though. Between that and the complete wildcard that was Starcraft, the next round was completely unpredictable.

I dunno if showing the protagonist of your game in his full 3D rendered glory is pic sabotage, I think that says more about the game itself.

What do you mean by anti-climax? I'm not really sure what that's referring to.

You set the arc up to be resolved with a certain fight or resolution and in the end solve it with a far less flashy or epic way, usually with the characters going "meh" and just leaving.

It's fun every once in a while, but in HxH it happens almost every arc, sometimes more than once per arc. Feels like the entire manga is building up to something that never happens.

I think HxH is massively overrated.

:/

It's not even really that popular.

Over here in the west*

You can't mention it in any anime forum and not get cornered by a horde of fans who think it's the best work of literature since Shakespeare.

Heck depending on where you go you can't mention you like stuff like Naruto and One Piece without the same funs showing up and snobbing you because you don't know real art.

There is something about HxH that makes its fans feel like intellectuals. I think it's the huge amount of subversions and anti-climaxes. The same thing doesn't appeal to me as much, though, because I actually like shounen.
