The point and click Erik the Viking was on a couple different computer platforms, yeah. It was based on the book but I think the NES game was based more on the movie version. The composer for it (his personal records are the only reason we have this music) says it was gonna be a Zelda-style RPG

Character size in relationship to the environment is definitely part of it. Makes things so cramped. I think the musical compositions are nice, but I don't like the instrument samples used. That final boss is bullshit, also.

I don't get how that's a good complaint for Mega Man 7 yet all the Genesis Sonics get a pass. I hate just how little of the environment you can see. In a game all about speed, only seeing 4 feet in front of you is brutal.

MM7 has pretty uninspired boss designs (gameplaywise) and stage designs too IMO, but yeah, the cramped style doesn't work for Mega Man. Or many platformers really; it's why Super Mario Land 2 falls flat too.

I'm not really a big Sonic fan so I'll leave the defence of his games to someone else!

Cramped screen, stiff controls, awful sound effects, tedious stage design, absurdly bad final boss. The robot masters and music are really the only saving grace.

Don't include a well-loved, critically acclaimed game in your OP and then whine about other people not liking a different video game.

Genesis Sonic was built on that foundation
Mega Man was not

The better comparison would be the Master System/Game Gear Sonic games, which were more hit and miss and had screen filling sprites
