the switch confounds me. I can't tell if the major appeal is the hardware or the software. I guess we'll find out during the Nintendo drought of 2018 (unless labo becomes Wii v2.0 which seems likely)

I think its a mixture of both. Nintendo perfectly executed, and marketed, the hardware in a way that they totally goofed with the Wii U. The Switch is an easy to understand concept that makes sense to people, and looks cool at the same time. To compliment that, they also delivered what had to be the best first year of software for any platform ever.

I feel like last year was so strong that this year would be hard pressed to live up. The idea of this year being a drought seems premature, though. We know Nintendo operates a little differently from Sony or Microsoft when it comes to announcing games, so there not being a strong lineup known right now isnt too concerning. Maybe if E3 rolls around and we still know nothing. I do think this year might have a more casual edge to it. The Animal Crossings, Pokmons, Labo, a 2D Mario (my dream here is less NSMB, more those 2D sections from Odyssey in a full game), maybe that rumored Smash Bros. Deluxe port. I dont think the Switch will be wanting for games this year, just maybe nothing as significant to the typical game player as Zelda or Mario. Well see!

those 2d sections in Odyssey were the worst part, I thought. probably because Mario 1 and not Mario 3/World.

yeah, I'm not dumping on the Switch - I think people are cool with the indie games for now. there's no question that the first party offerings are down though. they announced the Switch with Zelda, Mario, Splatoon, Arms, 1-2 Switch and Xenoblade. I don't think they have anything else besides a logo for Prime 4 and I guess Bayo3 if you want to count that. I'm just curious how they supplement the platform. normally you'd expect a Smash or a Kirby or something. maybe a Pokemon.

on average, Nintendo has made/published about 25-30 games a year for the last decade. The 3DS is on the outs, with just 3 announced games for the year (although with the continued success of the 3DS, maybe Nintendo does try and float DQ11, who knows). The Switch has like what, 8 announced games for 2018? the games will come.

As an alternative to the NSMB art style, I think the old school Mario 1 sprites in high-resolution, with way more twists to its level designlike the use of gravity, or even the set pieces like that one awesome moment in Odysseywould make for a cool, new 2D Mario. I feel like we should see something on that front soon, at least.

In the meantime, I think the smaller games like Mario Tennis, Kirby, ports like Tropical Freeze and Dark Souls, and indie games are supposed to help tide people over until Nintendo can launch its next wave of big software. I dont think the next few months are that bad, truth be told, but then, Im excited for DK and Mario Tennis, so that may cloud my judgment about the lineup, haha. Its hard to have a Mario or Zelda every quarter, anyway.

I don't know about the value proposition of Tropical Freeze. It's a great game, far better than the original trilogy or Returns, but... it's the exact same game, just4 years later and somehow more expensive. I mean, it's cool for people who didn't own a Wii U, which is practically everybody, buuuuut...

I believe thats the appeal for Tropical Freeze. If you owned it before, it probably doesnt resonate strongly, unless you want the game outside of the Wii U ecosystem (me!), but everyone else who missed out has a chance to get, what is to them, a great, new DK platformer.

It helps, I think, that its releasing in an environment where journalists, and forum goers alike, arent shouting from the hills that it isnt a savior. Everyone had something to say that Retros game wasnt a new Metroid, or a FPS, that would change the Wii Us fate.

yeah I obviously am not asking for a Mario or a Zelda every quarter - I'm realistic. I'm just hoping for a game that matters in 2018, and without knowing what prime 4 even is, I'm left wondering. you know me - the indie stuff will be just fine. I'm only talking in relation to its huge numbers and if that is sustainable.

Oof. What was it in Canada before? I would be think twice before rebuying a game at that price, too.

$55 I think. It was $50 in the States and came out in Canada when publishers were just starting to raise prices up here.

Yeah, it was only $50 here, and $60 on re-release, but an extra $25 would make me upset, too. Whats the typical price of a new game there? $80?

Oh, man, it gets so much better than the first world. I dont know if youd ever be super into it, but the level design later is ace. Its a game worth seeing until the end.

I'll say this, I liked it a lot more than what I played of the snes games!

Tropical Freeze is a huge improvement over the SNES games.

The SNES trilogy has a special place in my heart, because I grew up playing them nearly as much as Mario games, but Tropical Freeze is an undeniably better game. The level design, the gameplay mechanics, the challengeTF is a top shelf platformer. I really want to see Retro either finish out the trilogy with another game, or go wild and bring DK into 3D in a proper way.

I think the internet would revolt if Retro was just doing another DK after all this time.

They absolutely would! Of course, what the Internet wants Retro to be doing makes mildly shake my head. The world has enough FPSes. I guess it has enough platformers, too, but shhhh, haha. My preference is a 3D DK game, since I think theres more room in that genre to be influential, to do something new and unique, without resorting to be a collect-a-thon.

We need an HD DK Rap.

I think it needs to be. The Switch already has a handful of very successful online games - Splatoon, Minecraft, Rocket League, Mario Kart - but is that enough for people to say 'I need this'?
