It's a game with some freedom of choice and rewards exploration, but it's still pretty linear

You don't need to be registered ahead of time for side tournaments, no. Besides Virtua Fighter since that's being run by SEGA, and ST since that's invite-only (maybe there's a separate free one though)

If you don't have a spectator or competitor pass you can't be in the main ballroom on Sunday though, you have to go to a separate free room where they'll have the stream running

They'd probably want their first 3DS game to be a new experience so I expect we'll see RSE remakes later in the 3DS lifespan.

You can transfer the key to any other player at any point in their game, regardless of version, it's just that Assist Mode key is only unlocked on White 2 and Challenge Mode key is only unlocked on Black 2
