It's harder to find fighting games that aren't fun to watch than the other way around. Virtua Fighter can be boring if you're not into fighters, but that's about it. I recommend watching whatever you want.

As for players, I can't think of many top players that aren't likable. Floe can be whiny, but I like him enough. Marn has at least been trying to clean up his act. And I like FChamp dammit!

I have been lurking a bit in fighting game topics for a while and it looks fun, but I don't really play fighters or know tons about the whole community. Were I to try to get into this stuff a bit, what games would be good to watch? Any classy players I can root for? Other stuff I should know?

Marvel is an extremely fast paced game that might be a bit confusing for someone who doesn't know a lot about fighting games, but is flashy and tends to get the crowd/commentators most excited. Here's an example of an exciting recent Marvel match (for more examples, watch most of the other ECT4 matches)



SSF4 AE is a slower paced game (unless someone is playing Crimson Viper), more fundamental based, and reasonably easy to follow for anyone who's played a Street Fighter game. Here's a recent AE match that's worth watching (for more examples, watch most of the other CEO2012 matches)



KoF13 is sort of a happy medium between the two pacing wise, so it might be the best choice. It also occasionally has SPANISH COMMENTARY which some people seem to really like. I don't watch it as much, because I don't play it as much, because I'll never have the execution to be decent at it =(. Not as popular as the Capcom games, though, and a guy named Bala has probably already won it.

Soul Calibur is a 3D fighting game that I know nothing about on a competitive level.

MK9 is a game I thought everyone stopped playing.

SFxT is a game everyone stopped playing.

People to root for
Combofiend (Plays everything, best known recently for Marvel): Nice guy, always plays unconventional/fun to watch characters, frequently has amazing comebacks.

Mike Ross (Plays AE, "plays" Marvel): The best.

Street Fighter 4. Teaches the basics of fighting very well.
KoF is also a good watch.
Marvel is the craziest thing to watch.
VF is hard to watch unless you know whats going on.

I don't know about you guys but I've been on MarlinPie's dick since vanilla Marvel when he did that Ammy slow sword loop on stream.

I don't think Chris G's a dick as much as he just takes fighters very seriously. Like in Skullgirls when he dies to Double's level 3 he wont even bother to sit through the whole special and restart the match right there.



Also Marlinpie is a classy dude who's flashy as hell. Root for him.

On the note for Virtua Fighter you could download the demo and find out how to play it real easy. Just gotta keep a couple of things in mind like it's a really frame heavy game. The frames are super dumbed down and similar for the entire cast though and if you learn one person you learn them all. It's also just as much a game of tag as it is a fighter. Most of the time you can't just rush in and dominate. You gotta respect the persons move after yours or you'll get blown up a lot. Really easy to learn though and I think pretty fun.

I don't see infinites really mattering much. It's easy to knock off 3/4 life by using a fairly simple combo and one bar with most characters. Infinite gives you... a full bar, at the price of giving your opponent a full bar in the process, and is probably tougher to do than the simple 3/4 life comboes (which people already drop all the time).

But yeah it's sloppy. Bad in principle, but not going to change how many matches go I don't think.

Yeah, if you liked Marvel before, it's still good and this is gonna get patched ASAP. If you didn't this is just an excuse to hate. It's terrible that it got found just before EVO, but literally the only use the TAC infinites have in their current form is stalling for the timeout. They just take too much effort to kill someone with no health for thirty reps.

Again, they're hella good for timeouts. This doesn't make them a reliable tool until the combos start racking up twenty hits a rep (at which point they might actually be decent if the execution isn't TOO hard).

Marvel 2, Alpha 3, etc got on fine with infinites.

I wouldn't necessarily count on it getting patched; they've said many times that the dev team has all been spread out to other projects.

The sky isn't falling here. These infinites are pretty hard to do - you need to time the last hit of each loop so that it hits the frame you hit the ground so that you can be holding up, jump on the next frame and never give the game a chance to realize you landed. From what I understand, hitstun deterioration continues to build while you're doing the loops but doesn't go into effect until you've been in a neutral state on the ground. MarlinPie was talking about it on the 8wayrun stream this evening and said Doom and Dante's TAC infinites were really hard while Magneto's was easy. And let's not forget Capcom hasn't even publicly responded to these combos yet.

Let's give this at least a week to see what develops further before we all decide that Marvel 3 is ruined forever.
