To start with, it was known they toriyama was tired of dbz after the cell saga. He only did the buu saga because his fans really wanted it. And it was already apparent he was starting to exaggerate some of his tropes to poke fun at them. Before listing them, remember the great saiyan man saga? It was nothing like dbz. This seemed like the type of slice of life light hearted comedic manga that toriyama wanted to write but was unable to do in light of appealing to his fans. But he gave us a glimpse of what he really wanted to do before jumping into absurd transformations with no real emotional weight behind them, obscene power scaling, kids going ssj, fusions, etc. Dont get me wrong it didnt jump completely into hyperbole but you can tell toriyama was having a bit of fun.

With Super it just jumps straight into the realm of absurd. Character transformations resulting in different hair colors. Super saiyan god have its own super easy an form called super saiyan god super saiyan. Enemies and beings that not only have the ability to wipe out worlds and universes, can now wipe out dimensions. Pokes fun at the training trope with frieza surpassing a super saiyan god bu training for just a few days. DB in general has a recurring trope of villains becoming good guys, and it was often tastefully done:
Piccolo initially raised gohan to not only defend the earth but to spite goku, but when gohan shows him kindness and sees him as a human, he begins to change and his sacrifice was that turning point.
Vegeta, while a ruthless saiyan with a fierce pride, was determined to take out frieza, the being responsible for enslaving him and wiping out his race. It was only after his futile efforts, and in his dying breath pleading to goku to destroy frieza did we the audience understand compassion and remorse for the fallen prince. That and everything that occurred on Namek, made his turn to the good guys convincing
But with frieza lol.

Going back to the transformations, ultra ego itself is laughable.

Overall it just feels like DB Super doesnt carry much weight to it and lacks the emotion that DBZ had, and Im sure toriyama was intentional about it. He wanted to have a bit of fun with it and mess around with a lot of the reoccurring tropes weve been seeing since Dragon Ball.

A mother bear has reportedly strangled her cub and then killed herself by running head first into a wall to save them both from a life of torture.

The bears were reportedly having their gall bladders milked daily for 'bear bile' which is used in traditional Chinese medicine to remove 'heat' from the body as well as to treat liver ailments and sore eyes.

The bile, a digestive juice, is harvested through a permanent hole in the abdomen and gall bladder of Asiatic black bears, which, as it is open permanently, is susceptible to infections and diseases which can cause the animals unbearable pain.

This often leads bears trying to kill themselves by punching themselves in the stomach. To stop this they are fitted with iron vests.

It has been reported that the mother and cub were being kept in tiny cages known as 'crush cages' which restricted their movement, on a farm in a remote part of North-West of China, according to website Asia One.

Bears can be farmed for their bile for around 20 years, before they stop producing it and are killed.

Critics, including Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners, have opposed the use of bear bile in their treatments and increasing numbers are turning to herbal and synthetic alternatives.

this line by piccolo was really cool too. Gohan kept his eyes open the entire time when piccolo later sacrificed himself to save him. It's a shame chiaotzu's explosion did literally nothing. Didn't even scratch him.

I actually thought they did just that. Nappa got battered a bit and while not seriously hurt he looked pretty scuffed by the time Goku arrived. I agree Tien should have held his own a little more though.

it was visually there to a degree but there was no point where Nappa was ever really hurt. There was no point where I was like "yea they can maybe pull this off". Even as a kid I knew they were all doomed the longer the fight went on.

I wouldn't want to rewrite the whole thing. Nappa should have definitely triumphed over all of them, but he should have at least had some points in the fight where he was hurt, or at least had some possibility of losing. (krillin's destructo disk doesn't count)

I was okay with the way Yamcha died. He succumbed to his own hubris. It was a direct statement that the Z fighters cannot make one slip up against the Saiyans.

With Tien however. Tien should have had a better send off. Dude couldn't even land a single blow on Nappa and then gets his arm punched right off. Toriyama should have let him land at least one blow. Tien was one of the greatest martial artists on Earth. The difference in styles alone should have allowed Tien to land something on Nappa. I understand Nappa outclasses him in every way, but Tien's traditional martial arts style could have been his initial edge that Nappa adapts to.

Like Toriyama could have allowed this punch right here to land, and actually showed visible pain on Nappa indicating damage. At least he could have done that.

This is such a good scene here. Tien after having been battered by Nappa, and watching his best friend sacrifice himself for nothing erupts into rage; straight up ignoring Gohan's presence. He could have at least posed somewhat of a threat to Nappa with his blast. I understand that it could have killed Nappa had it not he blocked, but he did, and Tien's sacrifice ends with "I failed again". It should have been something.

I understand why Toriyama did it. As a kid, I was devastated watching them all get wrecked. I hadn't seen Dragon Ball, but I saw how hard all of these characters trained (and in the anime it's a shit ton of filler), and to see them all get completely outclassed, it was pretty heart-breaking. It made Goku's entrance that much grander when he finally did arrive, but Goku made that same entrance 3 more times in the show. They could have toned it back just a little, and let some of the Z fighters contribute somewhat against Nappa.
