MGS2's actual narrative was weak, IMO - poor writing, inorganic dialogue, weak characterization, story told in a way that would halt the flow of gameplay (PowerPoint type exposition that would last for a long while), etc.

the themes, however, felt really well thought-out, and feel relevant to the real world.

edit: it's still an amazing game, though, and I consider it to be one of my favorite.

I don't know if I'd put it as top narrative, though I think it has arguably the best set of mini-games in all of video gaming history in the VR Missions that came with substance, even if that was just an add on of the PS1 game VR Missions.

It was a stroke of complex literary genius to make a main character as annoying as the player. If only all video game characters were so annoying, perhaps mankind would have achieved enlightenment long ago.

It was a good story but by christ was it

1. overlong
2.full of itself

You could cut 69% of the dialogue and 30% of cutscenes entirely and lose nothing

I'm not knocking that the criticism of social media, fake news, information wars and cyber warfare wasn't both good and legitimately ahead of the times

but boy is it hamfisted

The best part is that literally everything Kojima said about the internet and the proliferation of grabage info was correct.

I liked the story. instead of the ''nukes are bad, m'kay" story we got from MGS1, the second game was making more of a comment on video games at our perception of what is real

but overall the game is really short, when you think about it. The maps are just tiny and there's only 2 areas. (3 if you count the end level but it's one hallway.)

Agreed. The execution and structure was lacking, especially compared to MGS3, but the themes and backdrop were on point despite those issues. The meta/fourth wall breaking bits were very well executed though. I will always remember my first playthrough in Arsenal Gear, and to this day, the only other game that has so thoroughly unsettled me as the last part of MGS2 was the last third of Silent Hill 2 when everything starts to fall into place.

Now there's a game that legitimately might be top 3 narratives in gaming

At least from design

I remember I wrote an English paper basically right after my first playthrough that discussed how interactive media (video games) has unique ways of creating a narrative. Silent Hill 2 featured very prominently in that paper, and my teacher (a 40ish year old woman) was actually really interested to learn more about the game and story.
