TopicThoughts on "Financial Abortions"
VanananaHeyHey
09/02/22 10:36:23 AM

Absolutely opposed.

Support is the right of the child.

Men can already choose to terminate their parental rights. Men and women can already make legal agreements to not have one party involved in the child's life. Men have control over where they deposit their sperm and, if they're that worried, they can just not have one-night stands or wrap it up. Them's the breaks. The vanishingly few women who would trawl nightclubs looking to sap your fluids for financial gain are not worthy of a societal overhaul or new law permitting "financial abortion," a term which flattens and conflates the possible burdens artificially.

Tough shit that women (theoretically if not legally) have control over their own bodies. They also bear the full physical burden of carrying to term or not, so obviously it's not and shouldn't be treated "the same" or have some kind of concocted "equality" that would only benefit men.

The previous competitor got a massive nosebleed. Apparently, she's somewhat known for nosebleeds in the circuit.

Name your kid a normal name with a normal spelling or an odd name with an expected spelling. Normal name with weird spelling or odd name with extra odd spelling is the worst of both worlds.

I get points and pay off my balance monthly. The points catalogue is mostly crap, but I got a toaster oven and waffle iron for my first apartment with them a decade ago. Still have the waffle iron. Plus, I've gotten multiple flights with them. The points rate for flights hasn't changed for over 10 years, so it's not a bad way to fly if I have to go somewhere anyway, like funerals and stuff.

I agree. I don't seek out art experiences, but the ones I've gone to with friends or whatever have been lackluster. Van Gogh was 100% boring even in the trailers. A lot of the other 'experiences' like "Alice in Wonderland's Tearoom" or "Bridgerton" are just expensive not-quite dinner theaters mixed with the dullest parts of a mediocre circus. The popups definitely feel like a cash grab most of the time.

Omega Mart (haven't seen in real life, but saw the trailers) aspires to be something like Liza Lou's Kitchen, but seems to be missing a lot of the actual bite.

Basically what Solar said. He played vidya on the side, but he did make some small talk with us. He got worried when the first place we went couldn't let us in because they were crowded --- he didn't want his parents to be mad that they drove him up there for nothing.

We all went bowling and he participated in that. His parents didn't bowl with us, but they sat behind us and bought some snacks or drinks. I tried to make polite conversation with his parents and they were awkward, but cordial. He asked them to help him out sometimes in telling a story, like getting specifics about when and why he had a surgery when we were all sharing stories about scars/broken bones. Like I said, they were nice, but I could tell they were a little freaked out by meeting people from the Internet; I have no idea how Duncan characterizes us to his parents.

After bowling, we all went for pizza. His parents went to another restaurant so that he could hang out with his friends alone for a while. He seemed really anxious to have them leave, but it all went fine. His mom pulled me aside and asked me specifically to make sure Duncan was okay (not sure why me???), but it was totally chill. About seven (?) of us were there and everyone was very cordial. No melties in any direction. We all even had some nice laughs together.

From his physical appearance, speech patterns, presence of both parents and eye contact, I could tell that he had some sort of developmental and/or social disorder, but he was capable of being decent, collected and calm even when his parents weren't there. So he is able to be within the very broad spectrum of 'normal' or 'okay' with other people and chooses to get inflammatory and dig into his hottakes. Becase he always has his parents with him, I can see why his understanding of the world would be limited, but with as much time as he spends on the Internet and with as much as CE loves writing walls of texts about every issue and hobby under the sun, he could totally grow as a person to a much greater extent than he ever bothered trying.

I was unimpressed by the challenger (no platform on website, just a donate button), so I didn't end up voting for either of them in the primary. But I had to concede that the incumbent must have had a teensy bit of sway if the Chinese were willing to hack his website but not the challenger's.

The right is using "woke" a hell of a lot more than the left they b**** about ever did. Or their overuse for so long has just destroyed my memory.
That's basically how it always works. "Politically correct" started out as a term used by actual authoritarian regimes to set official party lines (think Chairman Mao and Nazi Germany), but in the US was used in the 70s by Leftists to poke fun at other leftists who were being too doctrinal. The Right heard people they already didn't like saying "is that politically correct?" and just fucking ran with it as some kind of top-down demand backed by force. And then, of course, anything that could even be mistaken for progress got derided as only existing because of political expediency.

"Woke" had a similar progression, though it definitely started off meaning 'aware of issues' and 'enlightened,' rather than being an official governmental policy. In my circles, "woke" became self-satire at least ten years ago; though I still see it used unironically by a lot of liberals and leftists, they don't use it nearly as much as the Right.

What a bad take. No one is entitled to being dated by any particular person. The man in question (the character was a man masquerading as a woman for golf tournament wins) misled Patty and was intending on springing his intact genitalia on a woman after their wedding. That would be rape by deception, as well as attempted conversion. You trying to make a rare lesbian character into the bad guy fifteen years after the episode aired is not the valorous stance you wish it were.

VanananaHeyHey

Man, good luck. By-county is impossible because so many counties decided to stop collecting data by Easter 2020. Even the CDC numbers are just aggregations of the numbers they get from the counties and states, so those won't be truly accurate. If you find anything, please let us know.

There had been some kid who set up a website like StopCovid or COVIDTracker, but I can't find his info anymore. He was probably bought out, was using CDC data anyway or just stopped tracking when it became obvious that this wasn't going to end soon.

Just to clarify, the CDC daily count does show you new cases as well as cumulative averages: https://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker/#trends_dailycases

You have to mouse over the very skinny lines very slowly and you can see the figures for new cases day-to-day. Can also hone in on specific states. It still won't give you county data, or maxes by past weeks, but you can see day counts. Just remember that states have basically as much freedom as they want to lie, deflate or confound the data: Alaska had 0 new cases January 13th; 5,321 on the 14th; 0 on the 15th, 16, 17th and 18th; 9,956 on the 19th; 0 on the 20th; 6,327 on the 21st; 0 on the 22nd and 23rd...

I rowed in grad school and use an erg at the gym as part of my warm-up every day and in my circuit training when I default to the same few cardio exercises. Any rower is definitely a worthwhile piece in a home gym.

The ones at the gym and the ones we had to train with were all Concept 2s. I think they're good because you can adjust the resistance, but any machine that can do that will be good enough. Even if you don't have all the features on the cheaper version, you truly don't need them all: calories burnt estimates are almost always wrong and the little wi-fi games you can play (races, etc.) aren't useful unless you're at a gym with other people rowing at the same time. As long as you can see your strokes per minute, your split time, your actual time and your meters, that's all you really need. I only used the stroke arc view once, in a run-up to a competition. Basically, at least 50% of the Concept 2 features are not going to be necessary unless you're deciding to become competitive.

My dad had an analog rowing machine that was cool when I was a kid. I wanted to buy a WaterRower, but it didn't look like it could adjust the resistance, so I put my money into gym memberships instead.

We don't have an actual majority. No matter how many times people think that Democrats are just gleeful in their floundering, it always comes down to having the courts stacked against them and a lack of actual membership in Congress --- the media doesn't report on the victories, just the negative reaction to any possible progress.

If they wrote a law protecting abortion (how would it get passed with the makeup of the Congress?), it would just be challenged and struck down by this Court, exactly like the Voting Rights Act was.

If you're asking why we aren't just passing hundreds of Executive Orders, it's because actual progress would require real legislation, not just fiats that can be overturned by the next Republican in office.

VanananaHeyHey
05/03/22 2:34:32 AM
#56
This is likely not the answer you're looking for because I reject the terms "trans" and "cis" wholly, finding them to be based on the faulty premise that gender is actually a part of a person's soul or in some other way inseparable from their 'true' self. Asking me if I'm trans is like asking an atheist if they're Baptist or Catholic. So, like, yes, of course Baptists exist, but that doesn't prove the existence of God or a soul or Hell, just that people exist who call themselves Baptists and who follow certain precepts of belief because of that. But I do fit all the definitions of "trans," so here's my painful screed about why someone else may come to the same conclusions I have, while using for themselves the terms I reject.

I have always had dysmorphia (sex dysmorphia and other stuff, like occasionally glancing down and thinking I have the wrong number of toes for a second, or how I'm still convinced the doctors didn't get my foot straight after reconstructive ankle surgery) and dysphoria; spent my whole childhood from preschool onward telling people I was a boy in a girl's body/have always wanted to be male; wanted a sex change as soon as I heard about them circa 1995; I rejoiced when I was the only girl I knew whose voice cracked during puberty; hated and still hate being female; had a soft social transition in college (asking a partner to call my genitals a "dick," talking loudly about my non-existent penis, having people call me "dude," etc.); was on hormones to stop my period and may resume them soon; got a surgery to get my body closer to what I needed and want to have more surgeries (but won't); intended for years to have an elective double mastectomy but ultimately didn't because recovery would be too disruptive to my hobbies, job and life; haven't shaven in almost a decade; have wept openly and self-harmed because of the fate of my being; am open about my dysphoria and dysmorphia to friends, family and bartenders; have gone out of my way to try new forms of self-validation during sex that would make me feel more like a man; have been disappointed in Male filters and aghast at Female filters on Snapchat; have tried to pass as male; have bound my breasts; have had two episodes of sex eumorphia and one of ???-morphia where I definitely appeared to myself as male, but I thought I looked ridiculous and awful; have worn 'male' underwear for over a decade and pack occassionally; have a traditionally masculine name picked out that I only allow my former spouse to call me ... but I do not and cannot identify as trans, because all of my oppression is based on being Woman in society. I wasn't denied my rights or put into dresses because of the inherent man- or womanness of my soul --- I was because I'm female and female people are reared as Women and Women are supposed to wear dresses, according to society.

I do not identify as a Woman; I am one, because that's what female people in society are reared as. To analogize, I am a Pisces, even though I don't believe in zodiacs --- I was born under that moon, so there's a label, but it's a nonsense label to me, even though I happen to have some traits commonly attributed to Pisces. I was baptized Catholic, so in the Church's eye, I am Catholic (albiet a "lapsed" one), even though I do not practice or believe, even though my parents took me to a Luthern church from ages 2 to 13. I do not identify with the stereotypes and degradations of my sex, they're just a fact of my life. But I will not take a trans identity because I don't believe that anyone is inherently a woman. 'Woman' exists because of a set of stereotypes that are meant to cordon off female people from male people for the reproductive, social and sexual benefit of male people. It is so profoundly painful being told that I either have to affirm that I am correctly in my social position ("cis") or that I actually am a man all along and that the only problem is that I'm not like the other girls who do deserve and enjoy being in this social position ("trans"). I am not male. That's my whole damn problem. People telling me that I actually am a man does nothing to help me mentally, especially on days like this when the rights of female people are being taken away specifically to reinforce the role of Women in our society by people who believe in innate gender.

Gender expectations change between societies and between time periods, but they always involve female people being on the lower end of the esteem-and-personhood spectrum. Most cultures that have social roles for more than two genders primarily have their third+ genders be more accessible to male people, because female people can be impregnated no matter how they identify, which has always been the point of the oppression structure of gender. Gender is assigned based on appearance of genitalia at birth and always has been; I find the recent movement to try to obscure this fact by pleading the chromosomes of sea slugs, or the specificity of extant-but-statistically-rare human intersex conditions to be in bad faith, since chromosomal testing was never necessary to oppress female people for the previous tens of thousands of years. The oppressive rule of thumb was good enough to keep the "people who can probably be impregnated" in a separate life path from the "people who can probably impregnate." A female child (or certain intersex children*) will be given the Girl/Woman socialization because of presumed reproductive capacity, not because of any identification or comfort with that role --- it is imposed at birth regardless of whether that kid wants children or not/will die before puberty/has an invisible intersex condition/will miscarry/is infertile. Gender is not, has never been and can never be about validation or self-affirmation. Gender is bad and harmful.

I believe that, even in a perfect world with zero genders, sex dysmorphia would exist in a small minority of people. I do not believe dysphoria would be nearly as prevalent in a world with no genders, though I have no qualms believing it would to a lesser extent (both in breadth of people and in severity of cases). Other forms of dysmorphia and dysphoria unrelated to gender and sex** would likely still exist, so there's no reason for me to think they would vanish even if we somehow eradicated gender.

*Intersex people are either given surgeries to make them conform outwardly to binary expectations, or in certain other cultures/eras are treated as a third gender; intersex isn't the same as trans, though "assigned at birth" is a term from the intersex community that uniquely and accurately describes their situation. Unless excess tissue prevents healthy urination, intersex children should not be given surgeries.

**Sex is immutable and factual for a person's whole life; gender is social and malleable across societies in time. Confoundingly, some cultures (esp. in the past) have treated homosexuality like a third gender as well, but that was wrong to do, too.

Disclaimer that I fully support adults being able to access any surgeries/therapies/drugs they wish, being allowed to marry whom they please, have housing/healthcare/job protections, have name changes, etc. There should not be sexed pronouns, only "they," but that also won't fix any material problems --- plenty of languages without she/he have still managed to treat their female speakers terribly and to harm male people who did not adequately conform to Man.
