I never wanted to go to Cancun because beach resorts are really not my thing. My wife and mother in law are irritated at me because im just going through the motions on this vacation waiting for it to be over and its clear by my body language that im bored and dont want to be here.

They are also upset because im ruining it for the kids with my lack of enthusiasm and enjoyment. They told me im a jerk for not enjoying this vacation because they said Its not about you, its all about the kids. Apparently small kids can sense it if you dont wanna be there and you arent enjoying yourself?

I mean. why would I? Mexican beach resorts arent my thing and I never wanted to be here in the first place but they forced me to. Especially that were not even touring Cancun like I wanted to and were stuck in this stupid beach resort the whole trip till we finally go home.

Im sorry but this is not my type of vacation and you cant make me like this trip if theres nothing in it for me. The best anyone will get is me pretending to want to be there. If anyone wants me to enjoy this vacation, then maybe they should have thought about ways we can all enjoy it and not just the kids.

Visit the actual town of Cancun and non tourist areas is what Id normally say but things arent well there atm.

Uh yeah they will let you know if they want something from you. if you were ruining their fun you would hear their crying about it dont worry Sounds like your wife and MIL are trying to guilt trip you into playing with them or something

I was forced to be here by my wife and my mother in law. I didnt even want to go in the first place but they forced me to be here because they want me here to watch the kids.

I would even rather stay working than wasting my PTO in this waste of time vacation.

Im miserable here and I cant wait to go home.

I dont think the kids care, but if you are on vacation and you are doing this enough that they had to bring it up to you, its bothering them more than the kids and you are hurting their experience. Sometimes its just easier to say "the kids" but regardless, there could be worse things you are doing.

At 4 and 5 I don't think they will even really remember the trip. Most of my memories start at 6ish, but no one is the same I guess.

And I don't think a kid would notice you're not having a good time unless you are being extremely vocal about it or something

lol theyre my kids but grandma and grandpa (mother in law, father in law) want to take them to Cancun for vacation to have fun

I never wanted to go on this vacation and I made that clear in the first place but no one respects my wishes.

I think what I ask for is reasonable that everyone has to be included in the vacation right? We all have to have something that we want to do for us in trip to make it enjoyable.

I mean yeah, kids pick up on that stuff subconsciously. There's plenty of kids old enough to have subconsciously realized their parents didn't want them and are only doing what they must, but not yet at a stage where the kid is psychologically developed enough to put it into words and say that they don't feel like their parents care.

Beach resorts don't really seem like a place to go to for the kids. That's more for adults.

I think it's kind of true though. It's also going to happen more and more as they get older and you make more sacrifices but there will also be the time when your kids don't even want to be around you...

I think you should be able to take your kids to the pyramids tho. That is a much better quality experience than a resort.

As a parent of a 6 and 4 year old you sound kinda douchey and miserable. Own it and craft some favorable memories with your family instead of bad ones.

My parents were trying to get us to go on a Disney cruise with the rest of the family next year

would be my wife and our will-be 2-year-old, plus my sisters and their husbands and 5 kids aged 1-5

You probably saved yourself $15k-$20k by not going on the most expensive cruise possible.

I have a general distaste and even distrust for resorts after working at one as a teenager, so I'd say it's a good thing if your attitude rubs off on the kids and they also learn to dislike resorts. Well, depending on what type of resort. But the luxury hospitality industry is not something I tend to support.

Once you have kids, it's not about you anymore. It's about the kids, so suck it up and make memories with them.

That sounds like some weird boomer logic. You can absolutely do things that you enjoy too on vacation.

Why are your in-laws planning your vacations though? That seems like the main source of your annoyance. Where you take your kids on vacation should just be between you and your wife.

Problem is little kids don't care about long bus rides and touring, they rather be in the swimming pool or on the beach chair with their ipad. Same thing happened to me last month, I had to go to Cancun with wife and kids even though I wasn't thrilled about it. I still went and sucked it up and did my best to make the most of it, if not for them, then for myself since I already took time off work for it. Bottom line is that it's still personal time with my family regardless of the setting, and the most important thing is I would never forgive myself if something bad happened to them and I wasn't there to at least try to protect my family. We're talking about Mexico, not Disneyland so there's always that element of risk just being there.

I get the sense that if TC spend some not perseverating about how this isn't what he wanted to do, he could get some enjoyment out of relaxing in a cancun resort lol.

Agreed. I could understand if it was significantly cheaper or something. I think it's just the vibes.

But in general I have little interest in beach resort vacations.

It depends on where you live. Beaches in other countries can be very different. Like I live in Los Angeles. Our beach water is dark and murky and we don't really have resort hotels right on the beach. But if you go to a beach like Fiji or Tahiti, the water is crystal clear and the resorts are right there.

Im not expecting anything really. I was fine just hanging out at the hotel playing with my iPad all day doing whatever.
