They look better in battle because their perspective matches the side view of the battle, where as the old sprites were designed in a perspective to the world maps / mode 7 view. So they look worse when doing anything else other than fighting due to mismatched perspectives. 3. The new sprites are drawn in a higher resolution and with a different palette than the rest of the game. While the new sprites are, in isolation, better looking, they look out of place in a game which uses the older coloring style for everything else. But if you just play the game for a few hours You literally won't even notice it.
