The random battles in FF7 are basically a formality but you are making it harder on yourself if you dont use the materia system as intended.

You can break the materia system, but you can break pretty much any FF system. It requires meta knowledge though, and most new players arent going to be doing a 4x KotR on Sephiroth on their first playthrough

1x KOTR is enough to kill him unless you grind to level 100 which unlocks a harder version

Did you play ff7? You normal attack everything but bosses. It's not worth the time to go through the menus to do anything else. Let alone waste the mp.

And if you over level, which is easy to do, you can normal attack the bosses too

If you normal attack everything you're not even going to get past the first boss unless you spend hours grinding.

So clearly you didn't even play the game.

The first boss? What hard mode version of the game are you playing that you can't just use normal attacks against the first boss? Maybe some of the tougher bosses a few hours in would give you some trouble, but the Guard Scorpion is barely even a fight.

Try mashing X against Guard Scorpion and see where his tail gets you

Look just because you don't understand how to set up your materia to make your normal attacks ridiculous doesn't mean nobody does.

You can also set up an elaborate mime / counter where you just do nothing and then the enemy attacks you and you counter with KOTR 16 times.

Japanese developers make games relevant to the politics of Japan.

Ace Attorney series is a satire of Japan's busted Criminal Justice system, for example. Kind of like a less violent GTA.

lots of JRPGs are coming of age stories about young men / women assuming the responsibilities of an adult for the first time, often with little or no ability to prepare.

There's also a lot of Japanese cultural references that most people don't understand. Waluigi's name, for example, is actually a clever pun that only makes sense in Japanese. If you didn't know that, you would think they just slapped "wa" to the beginning of his name and called it a day.

And sure Japan makes its fair share of non political games. There isn't anything remotely political about Mario Party, but that's not always the case. Radiant Historia is a game about fighting climate change, for example.
