I love Blockus. It has a lot of strategy elements that you pick up the more you play it. Rushing to the middle and sectioning off stuff isn't always optimal. There is also a 2 player version with a slightly smaller board where you start in a different spot, which feels a bit more strategic and less chaotic, which can be good depending on what you are looking for.

Have you ever played 7 Wonders Duel? It's quite a bit different, but has many similarities. It's only 2 player, but far more strategic. I think it's waaaay better than 7 Wonders. It has multiple win conditions, as opposed to just victory points, so there is much more to consider, and you are constantly having to counter stuff your opponent is doing, so it's nothing like solitaire. BGG has it as #16, vs. the original at #49, so definitely a pretty big gap.

Semi-co-ops are some of the most fun, and I have a feeling there are going to be some higher on your list. That's the best way of playing co-op IMO, and pretty much avoids qb'ing, and even if someone does do it, it ends up coming off as a mini-mind game between players since people don't know for sure. But ones where you can have multiple ways to win, whether it's helping allies or killing them, with conditions that get triggered by unforeseeable circumstances, or maybe hidden win agendas that each player has. Those kinds of games are a real blast. Looking forward to see which ones are on your list!

Late reply, but nice to see Catan down already. It's a perfectly fine game, but feels like a stepping stone into more in depth board games. Good intro for fans.

Zombicide is pretty fun for what it is, but I'm not really into dungeon crawlers much, because my probably least favorite thing that can happen in board games is quarterbacking. Of course it all depends on your play group, but if you aren't discussing what is going on, why even play with people, so there will be naturally some form of quarterbacking, and I just don't like it.

Should have checked the trade board. I see Zacians go for 2 Master Balls, or sometimes just a certain shiny. And you can trade Mints for extra Master Balls if you only had the 1.

There are a ton of cards where you can remove part of someone's dungeon, buff the hero, make the hero skip a room, etc. Plus there are actual counterspell type cards. Some of this probably depends on if you have all the expansions, not sure since I have all of them mixed together.

I love the setting and visuals of Boss Monster, but games get bogged down really fast by Heroes entering dungeons, and once they start entering, it becomes waaaaay too hard to keep track of what everyone's dungeon is like, and all the cards you have that counter theirs. It's perfectly fine for a 2 player game, but I really can't stand it for anything beyond that.

King Dice's fight had to have been one of the most overwhelming fights the first time when you realize exactly what is going on. Felt so helpless. But damn, once you finally beat it, so satisfying. Werner is a great fav boss choice. I loved the cat.

The Konami Code is in the original Contra, but you rarely hear people simply say "I beat Contra". They'll often say "I beat Contra, but I had to use the Konami code" or "I beat Contra, without the Konami code". The rewind function is kind of like that.

My issue with ONUW is how the total randomness undermines any sense of strategy. Not that a game needs strategy to be fun, but it feels like a game built on it, but a few players at random just have their shit ruined for no reason.

The game is solid and the new Pokemon are top tier. The series was eventually going to reach a point where bringing all of the Pokedex would become unviable, and that ended up being this game. As a big fan of fighting games, it happens with them all the time, and the community shits on it, then gets over it. Pokemon is just a bigger franchise than any fighting game series, and with mostly different fans, so they probably aren't used to it.

But for me, Mary certainly carries an old fashioned and motherly sense, because literally Mother Mary, whether it's Biblical or a Beatles song.

Annette still sounds super old fashioned too. I can't recall ever hearing it on a young person.

Exactly. Depends on the game. The developers of each game have their own set difficulty and leeway. I think adding your own leeway, no matter where, before a boss, mid-fight, etc, reduces any intended experience.

He probably meant within the default settings of what's allowed in game. Most games allow the player to save in some fashion before major boss fights.

If come one is using an emulator to play and use save states part way through a fight that's what he means as it's not something that was ever intended to help you

Certainly true for more modern games. My mindset was aimed at NES era where the Rewind is commonly seen--such as Mega Man, where the stage and boss go hand in hand as part of the challenge.

But the challenge in a game's difficulty often comes in one's ability to do a series of button inputs with minimal mistakes in an established window set by the game designers. You say saving mid boss fight is cheating, but before a boss isn't? Perhaps the game designers intended the full stage AND boss to be part of the same challenge window in which your skill isn't allowed to falter, and saving before a boss when you normally couldn't would be seen as a form of cheating.

I believe that's the only way one could fairly say that they beat the game, without elaborating. On one hand, if you beat the game on the hardest difficulty and 100%'d it, it would leave a sense of under representation of yourself and game experience if you never mention it how far above and beyond you went. The flip side of course being this topic, where you took the easy way out, and take full credit, leaving others to misinterpret your experience. It's mostly pointless, but I just think when the topic of beating a game comes up, people would typically talk about it enough to explain what their experience was like, so it mostly wouldn't matter.

Beating with save states and rewinds is just a thing to specify when claiming to have beat a game. I don't think you can say "you beat the game" without adding that you used save states and rewinds. That's like beating Contra with the Konami code, and just saying "you beat the game" and not elaborating that you had help, or using a Game Genie/Game Shark for any other game, and saying "you beat the game" without elaborating.

Yes, it's beating the game, but there are lots of ways to beat a game. Usually a conversation involves more than a couple words. I wouldn't go up to someone and say I beat Tetris, and then walk away. There is certainly more to a conversation about what difficulty, or how you did it, and explaining your thoughts about the game.

So ultimately, Yes for the poll. It just has caveats.

It's amazing how much a playgroup can change opinions. I've never played Sheriff, but I don't think it's for me anyway, because it seems like you are bluffing entirely RNG, with no skill? But anyway, I see this all the time with other games I love, and it always makes me feel bad that people just didn't get a good group, and reading their horror stories is very feel bad.

I spawned an HA one on my first try and just caught it earlier. I already caught a regular Hatterene with its HA yesterday, but this is the first Gmax one I've managed to spawn.

Very nice! I guess we all get lucky on certain things. My first Gmax Lapras was HA.

For me the items are almost used immediately except masterballs, I always save those for the title legendary.

Masterballs were mostly useless all Pokemon games because you could just save first, then try again. Sword/Shield is the first time Masterballs matter, because you can nab a spot in a stranger's GMax raid that has a shiny, and there is no saving and trying again, and you only get 1 ball throw with a small catch %. For that reason, it is worth hoarding even more because the right moment to use it is so hypothetical and huge.

My headphone wires don't dip that low because my speakers have an audio input that sits on the desk. Also for computing, I prefer traditional wooden chairs to computer chairs; I've never found a computer chair that does my posture and back any favors, and I've tried a bunch.
