I've enjoyed Tokaido but haven't pulled it out for much serious play in a while. It's primarily, again, more of a "hey this group isn't SUPER into tabletop so let's pull out something that isn't going to make their heads spin and has a quick setup and expansion".

I do really like the way it changes the turn-taking paradigm, I'd say it's worth going through it just for that even if it weren't pretty.

I played Boom for the first time a few weeks ago and mostly enjoyed it. We had a group of 15 which felt maybe a little too large, but as far as party games go I thought it balanced the social and gamey aspects well!

I forgot all about welcome to the dungeon, me and a group of guys I used to work with would play it sometimes over lunch. I admire its graceful simplicity and wouldn't say no to playing it again, but it's not a game I'm aching to replay.

I think the goal for a game's design though should be multiple paths to victory without it feeling "easy".

If option a and b are equally good then the player can at least have some agency over which one they pick.

If option a is always better than option b, no matter what, and b makes it less likely to win, then the player has no agency. It's strictly best to pick option a and there's no room to flex any creativity.

have def heard good things about sushi go party - does it have more interesting food types than the base?
Yes, and it really helps each game feel very unique.

Each food category (ex: appetizer, entree, side, dessert) has a number of foods to choose from before the game, so the deck is customized to what the group wants to go for. Each of the foods have different mechanics (ex: only get points if no one else played miso soup this turn, if you have more than 2 eels you lose points). I almost consider the base game to be like a videogame demo - it's fine for a quick session but once it's done there's not really any point in going back to it. Party is the full game.

I haven't played a lot of competitive dungeon crawling games (Munchkins and something Thunder stone?), but I do really enjoy the bloodborne card game. It's been a pretty solid warm up game for my group before we get into more involved things such as terraforming mars or robo rally.

I had a similar experience with Fire Tower. I played it at the first PAX Unplugged with the creators, really enjoyed it, pledged to the kickstarter... and have played it 4 times since? The first three were fun, but the fourth was just kinda dull.

Europe is my favorite TTR map, but I'm also very fond of the Nordic Countries map.

I tried carcassonne once or twice on steam and it never really made any sense to me. I think I'd be much more partial to it if I had it explained to me by an actual player, but as you described I'm already familiar with tabletop in general so I probably wouldn't enjoy it as a gateway experience.

I couldn't get the controls down for Transistor and I haven't tried Pyre yet. I know they both have definite fans, but man was Bastion good.
Bastion was indeed great! It took me a while to grow into Transistor's more methodical combat, but once I did it really began to outshine Bastion. Pyre is a little more niche because it's kind of like a fantasy basketball VN with light rpg elements, but it's also absolutely spectacular.

I've definitely been in a similar boat. It's one thing when you're doing it because you enjoy the game so much and want to experience all the content. It's another thing entirely if you're doing it like a chore.

One thing that's really helped me out with just not caring about missables is to put a higher priority on just seeing the credits. And if I enjoyed the game enough after that, I can always pick it back up and go through again, with a better understanding of everything and be less likely to need a guide or any other sort of help. Beating the game won't prevent you from playing it again!

It's unnecessarily elitist and nostalgic to try to distinguish it. Who the fuck cares how someone "beat" the game, they still played and got to the credits. Let people play how they want. Not everything needs to be a goddamn trophy.

It's a good game, and they managed to emphasize the characters beyond their reproductive capabilities. Even on Hard mode, however, there are only a few maps that are at all difficult. This is primarily due to a new game mechanic that allows you to rewind time instead of restarting the full level.

I too used to work at a major health insurer in the region, in their pricing department. It's not evil work, it's absolutely crucial in order to make any sense at all out of anything.

I don't have all the answers. But letting insurers do what they think is best is not a solution I can get behind. Frankly, I think that a lot of the jobs around the healthcare industry should go away. PBM's, for example, are vultures that don't really serve much purpose besides making money for somebody not involved in any way with the actual care of the patient.

Edit - I recognize that this is probably somewhat naive, and if my past experience work with retirement planning teaches me anything it's that we'll probably have more jobs that are somewhat "unnecessary" under a government solution. I could support a heavily regulated but still "private" industry, but my concern there is that those regulations could be more easily peeled back than M4A could. Look at the banking industry post-recession. Regulations put into place, but not hard to remove them.
