On the one hand, having as many missions as i want is great because it allows me to not worry about trying to use characters that join under leveled. But on the other hand, the fire emblems that have a limited number of missions are more rewarding for figuring out - you can't just overlevel your way through.

The only absolute is the "Triangle", and that goes down to two particular pairings:

Donnel x Sully;
Gaius x Tharja

It can be "solved" by adding in Robin x Nowi, but there's quite a few reasons why that's a bad idea.

It's a good skill but if you're not looking to minmax and spend hours of your life sludging through battles with risen, then it's entirely unnecessary.

The kids can inherit skills that would otherwise be impossible for them to receive from their own class pool.

I can't imagine a less fun way to play these games on your first run and it really doesn't matter outside of Lunatic. I don't think that's accurate? But it's been a while so i don't recall exactly.

I enjoy a lot of the characters. I thought that PoR was generally more difficult than awakening, but because you can grind and do side missions, as well as fight spawned enemies, it's easy to want to min-max and get paralyzed by the number of choices. As you said, you're playing casually, so that's not a big concern.

Pair-up is broken af and that's probably why i found it to be easier.
