My favorite alternate resource systems in TCGs are Star Wars CCG and Lord of the Rings TCG, but they're both very different games than Magic and neither of their systems would really work for a Magic-like game.

In Star Wars, you play location cards that give 0-3 Force for each player. Each side can give a different number, and 1 or 2 were the most common. Each player plays one location at the start of the game, and each turn you activate Force by adding up all the Force icons for your side on both players' locations, and counting that many cards +1 off the top of your deck into a separate face-down Force Pile. You paid for things by spending Force, counting them off one at a time into a third Used Pile. At the end of your turn you could draw as much as you want out one by one out of your Force Pile, or leave as much as you want to save up for later turns. Once your turn was done, you recirculated your Used Pile under your deck.

In Lord of the Rings, each player's deck was half good guy cards that they played on their turn, and half bad guy cards that they played on other players' turns. When it's your turn you basically have unlimited resources. Play anything you want, adding counters to the Shadow pool to pay for it, there's no limit. Then you move to the next location and also add 1 for each character you have plus whatever number is on the location you move to (which is the opponents choice, generally speaking). Then the other players get to spend all those counters you added to pay for their bad guy stuff that you have to deal with. So you can spend all you want, but the more you spend the more your opponent gets to spend against you. At the end of every turn, both players can optionally discard 1 card and then draw up to their maximum hand size, which I believe was 8.

One big downside to both of these systems is that all resources are colorless, so there's nothing really keeping you from playing a deck of all the best stuff for the most part. Star Wars handled this by splitting the game into Light Side vs Dark Side, with 2 different card backs, so every card could only be used by one side although there were cards that got 2 versions, one for each side. A later spiritual successor game tried to solve this by adding a secondary resource called "support icons" to a certain locations, and each card required you to have 1-3 support icons for that card's faction in play to be able to play it.

In LotR this was really only a problem for the good guy side of each deck; your bad guy characters all got discarded at the end of the turn you played them so for consistency's sake most people only played a single faction of bad guys anyway. They handled it in later sets by making a lot of cards that only worked with characters from a certain faction, or that required you to have 1 or more characters from that faction in play. Given that you were limited to 9 characters total between in play and ones that had been killed (and most decks ran far fewer than that) requiring one or more to be of a certain faction was a big limiting factor, though a bit clunky as well. Certainly not as elegant as the basic resource mechanic.

I remember liking one of the GBA Duel Masters games back in the day, but while the mana mechanic was cool I'm not sure the cards were as interesting which probably has something to do with the game not catching on

Also just the difficulty of launching a new card game at that time, basically everything that came out then died in a couple years at best

Looking to Standard 2022, what are some good cards for Simic Ramp to replace stuff like Maraleaf Pixie, Cultivate, and Beanstalk Giant/Fertile Footsteps? Obviously there may be something good in Innistrad but what existing stuff should I be looking for? Field Trip + Environmental Sciences sort of gets me Cultivate + 2 life for 2 more mana which isn't terrible but not GREAT. Maybe I could also rely more on card draw + Druid Class?

To be fair, we don't say "Marionics" or "Dragon Fantasies" or anything like that.
It took a while before "first-person shooter" supplanted "Doom clone". Mostly I think it happened when the genre began to outgrow that descriptor.

I think that's why it's taken so long for "Metroidvania" to get replaced. It was only in the last generation or so that we started to get significant numbers of these games that weren't Metroid or Castlevania.

I didn't like it. It wasn't bad, just entirely mediocre. Definitely not Gunn's best work, though he was held back by an incredibly weak cast. Idris Elba is a good actor who does not fit this movie at all. John Cena was fun enough until the halfway point where he just... stopped? doing anything fun?? I've never been a fan of Margot Robbie, as Harley or otherwise, and this movie certainly didn't change that. King Shark was okay but he was basically Groot, and Ron Funches's take on the character is way better and I was just left wishing we had him here instead.

I don't know, I feel like this sounds harsher than I really feel. It doesn't suck, it just did nothing for me.

There are multiple baseball teams named after what color socks they wear. New York's basketball team is named after pants. Montreal's hockey team's name means "people from Canada", and while they still had one so did Vancouver's.

Sports team names are stupid, is what I'm saying.

I didn't mind that they made Taskmaster a silent killer. I only really know him from UMvC3 where he's one of my mains, but I knew they weren't gonna use that voice bc it's basically Rocket's voice, so actually not having any voice is better imo. I think they were a little too subtle with the copied moves though, since they were there but most people didn't notice them aside from the Cap shield stuff.

Well after episode 4 the whole "Sacred Timeline"/multiversal war thing is potentially bullshit bc we know the Time Keepers aren't real and if the Miss Minutes video was lying about that then there's no reason to believe that stuff either.

One theory I've heard that I like is that the villain behind the Time Keepers may be another Loki variant, perhaps one that succeeded in his villainous schemes, probably in Avengers since this Loki is fresh off his defeat in that movie. This would fit with what Sylvie was saying about maybe what makes a Loki a Loki is that they're destined to lose, as well as the repeated stuff about who's the superior Loki. Also just the general idea that Loki is his own worst enemy, in this case literally. It feels more like the ending they'd go with for this series than it being Kang, like that feels more like the Agatha All Along reveal while Kang is more of a Mephisto theory. Still, I could see him being introduced in a post-credits tease like Thanos was.

I kinda don't agree with the whole thing about Loki being a narcissist and that's why he fell for Sylvie. His animating motivations for the last decade have been self-loathing and an inferiority complex. Dude HATES himself. Like think of all the time he spent between Dark World and Ragnarok just chilling as Odin. He didn't seem to have any ambition beyond that, and he didn't try to do anything like make a miraculous return and have "Odin" abdicate the throne to him so he could rule under his own identity. I don't think a narcissist would be satisfied ruling under a false identity, but I get the feeling Loki was truly happy during that time. He hated being Loki and just wanted to not have to anymore.

I had these Genesis 6-buttons that were really good. I liked them better than the official pads, even.

I also had this N64 pad that I got early on, which was kinda trash but I liked the dpad better and the C buttons were less different than A&B so I liked it better for Killer Instinct. Plus it ended up being incompatible with the Rumble Pak when that came out so Interact gave everyone who sent in a barcode a free "Tremor Pak" which was their version that worked with it.

And of course I have a couple Hitboxes that I use for fighting games, one that I bought and another I put together myself from loose parts and an empty case.

I think 999 was my favorite of the trilogy mostly because I didn't know what I was getting into going in, and I'd never really played a game like that. Plus it just caught me at the right time, moreso than the other two.

One thing I will say is that when the mysteries finally start getting resolved, you need to temper your expectations and understand that this is a Japanese story and not a Western one, and what that means for what constitutes an "explanation".

That video was really fun! You come off very likeable which should serve you well in your YouTube career. I really like videos like this where people talk over their memories and experiences with games they love because it makes me think of my own memories with those things.

In terms of the games themselves, I think you may have undersold how terrible the 30 health thing is in Metroid 1. It makes the game just unplayable to me, which is a shame because as much as I hate Metroid 1 as a game I absolutely adore it as an aesthetic. The more polished and "defined" the games become, the more they lose the "anything can happen" feel and I think the 4 games in this video show it happening on an almost linear curve. As much as the reused tilesets made navigating Metroid 1 a pain, it made it incredibly easy to believe that there could be an enormous additional area just beyond any small passageway. Later games, with more bespoke environmental art, have a better presentation but no longer feel as limitless because you just know they only drew so many environments. Naturally, Super Metroid probably hits the sweet spot between those two poles the best.

Yeah, I think my highest in recent years was $75 for a loose Dragon Warrior IV and I don't think I'd go for much more than that, maybe $100 max.

I mean it's relative, I guess if I saw an NWC for $500 I'd have to consider it for resale value alone but I don't normally get involved with those sorts of things.

One tip if you actually want to collect Neo Geo games is to get a consolized MVS (the arcade hardware modified to connect to a TV) rather than the original AES console. The MVS cartridges are a LOT cheaper. Metal Slug X, the $7000 game in your photo, goes for about $100-$150 for example. The games are just way cheaper and way easier to find across the board, and there's a number of games that didn't even come out on AES at all.

They won't look pretty (MVS carts just have a simple monochromatic spine label) and they won't be boxed bc MVS carts didn't come in retail packaging, but if you really need it you can get blank shockboxes for about $11 each and print out custom covers for them.

This episode was really bad bc it focused way too much on Karli and she's a terrible character. She's leading a movement but what does she want? All they've said it's the Flag Smashers think it was better during the Blip, but they haven't shown is anything about WHAT was better. What does Karli want to change? She's helping refugees, but she's also attacking the GRC who are... also helping refugees? All her ideas seem completely half-baked, and it was way too easy for Sam to bait her into authoritarian rhetoric.

The only person who seems to be a clear-minded good guy in this show is... Zemo? I don't think we're supposed to think Zemo is the hero, but so far Zemo is the hero. Sam & Bucky may want to be the heroes, but they're far too uninformed about what's going on. It's not like this is a mystery intrigue thing though, they don't seem to WANT to know. Then again the show doesn't seem to know what's going on either.

There's still 2 episodes left to turn it around but right now this show is the rare MCU miss for me.

I mean it is more money than other movies are doing. Like there were a few movies that debuted on streaming rental/purchase last year and the standard for those was $20 for a rental or $25 to own. $30 to get access 3 months early on an active subscription is more money for less access than the "own" option.

Now you could argue that Disney, and particularly Marvel, makes bigger-deal movies that can command a higher price than, say, Bill & Ted Face the Music, but it is a difference and it's certainly one that someone could decide is too much.

Personally I don't care for the streaming vs theater price comparisons, especially when people start comparing prices for families to make the streaming seem like a bargain. The theater experience is just *different* than the streaming experience, and a family situation makes that particularly true.
