Board 8 > Y'all wanna talk about Metroid?

I had this in the works well before Dread dropped, and it was originally planned to be the whole series. But given the hype and the sheer amount of work this turned out to be, I decided to chop it into parts. Thankfully though the first 4 games are Metroid 1-4 story wise, so it kind of works as a refresher before Dread comes out.

My plan was just to do things chronologically by release, so next would be Prime, ZM, Prime 2, and the two DS games. The final one being Prime 3, Other M, the two 3DS games and AM2R.

I've always just pronounced it like the SSBM announcer since I've played that game more than anything else and was a Samus main.

I just realized I pronounce Samus with the same "a" sound as I do Mario, which is the way everyone from the NY area does.Think the "a" sound in hat, rather than the "a" sound in blah.

I kind of think its having the opposite affect and its getting buried, since all the bigger Youtubers are piling on the Metroid stuff.

But my God that game is everything I wanted. I originally was gonna end the video saying what I'd love to see in a sequel and then Dread checked off all the boxes. 2D, HD, new area, new suits, new enemies, and continuing the actual story.

It's funny because those are reasons I like Prime more than the 2D games.

I do think the speed of Prime is what needs to be addressed the most in 4, though MP1 was still one of my favorite games of all time for a while.

Its not worse but its definitely less MY style. I love the fluidity and pace of the 2D Metroids.

Yeah so overall it was a good video as far as all the technicals are concerned. Very watchable with the pace and editing and shit. Downside is that there's nothing really new here but you know that depends on what you really want out of making videos. As a means to express yourself there wasn't anything wrong at all.

Actually for me I didn't know about the power bomb plus charged shot shenanigans so that's cool

Yep, you're right. For this first iteration I'm honestly not trying to do anything new and just provide something comfortable to watch and maybe get a laugh or two. I'm hoping if the whole "Play an entire series and break it down" style can turn into something if there's enough interest, and as I get more comfortable doing it I will most likely try to branch out and do some new stuff. But for now I just wanna find my voice and editing style.

I also wanted to remove all semblance of breaking down the games development history, discussions about it's era and release, and just take a look at the games purely as games and nothing else. The most I'll give a game a pass on is the system it released on. I find a ton of Youtubers like to dive into those details and I wanted to provide something that stays away from it.

I have never played a Metroid Prime game, even though I own the Trilogy for Wii.

That video was really fun! You come off very likeable which should serve you well in your YouTube career. I really like videos like this where people talk over their memories and experiences with games they love because it makes me think of my own memories with those things.

In terms of the games themselves, I think you may have undersold how terrible the 30 health thing is in Metroid 1. It makes the game just unplayable to me, which is a shame because as much as I hate Metroid 1 as a game I absolutely adore it as an aesthetic. The more polished and "defined" the games become, the more they lose the "anything can happen" feel and I think the 4 games in this video show it happening on an almost linear curve. As much as the reused tilesets made navigating Metroid 1 a pain, it made it incredibly easy to believe that there could be an enormous additional area just beyond any small passageway. Later games, with more bespoke environmental art, have a better presentation but no longer feel as limitless because you just know they only drew so many environments. Naturally, Super Metroid probably hits the sweet spot between those two poles the best.

Wow thank you, that means a lot! I do too, I've been heavily influenced by many Youtubers and those who keep things relatively positive while giving criticism is much better than the rage-y vein poppers. I also love hearing people's memories with games, its just good wholesome shit.

And yeah, without a Map or Save States, vanilla Metroid is NOT forgiving at all. I guess I breezed over it since in my last run I never died, though I was always acutely aware of my Energy and farmed a bit whenever it got too low. I also didn't mention there is one way to refill your energy instantly, finding an E tank. And with a map that's not so hard to do.

Yeah you just have to be good at Metroid 1.

I can pretty much play it these days without dying if you're just conservative about your health, and using E tanks to refill yourself over the course of the game. Which does require knowing where they are of course.

I also don't think the game is big enough to require a map. The only problem is how same-y things look, but it's definitely small enough to memorize if you can use good markers.
