Mahal had a massive win streak before he turned into a jobber, Lopen.

I don't remember it. I remember him managing Khali and Khali winning a lot!

I suppose I should've said "single's win" though cause I do remember him and Khali winning a couple of tag matches.

Tyson Kidd doesn't have charisma for me to endorse him. He's a good wrestler, but not nearly good enough to make up for that. Here are the guys on the roster I think deserve better.

1. Drew McIntyre
2. Goldust (assuming he isn't DQed for the same reason Regal is)
3. Jack Swagger (relevant, but still like a low midcarder-- considering he was a world champion at one point he deserves better)
4. JTG
5. Yoshi Tatsu
6. Natalya (deserves better than "speedbump for every challenger to Beth's title")
7. Jinder Mahal (not saying he should be a main eventer or anything but has he ever won a match?)

That's pretty bad, but eh. If I was in your position I'd go for the 10% window I think. Keep in mind other people are going to do the same thing you're considering and miss, have ineligible entries, and have somehow worse tiebreakers.

If you care more about getting first place than any prize, though, go for it.

Good luck! I personally think Mario's going to win and knock everyone flat tomorrow so.

Or maybe that's hope I don't know.

Trainers are a lot more frontloaded than Link so yes I could see them choking this. I'm thinking FFVII needs to take the lead overnight and build a lead of at least a few hundred votes to not just get overtaken again later.

@Lopen umm if Link is even worth 53% on Mario then Cloud/Seph should be beating/going even with trainers. How is Link being worth less than 53% on Mario not an upset?

Cause if you actually absorb the data of this contest and don't bind yourself to results of past contests Link shouldn't be worth more than 53% on Mario without SFF. Mario's looked about as savage as Link. Compare Mario vs Sonic and Link vs Mega Man. Unless you think Mega Man vs Wily are significantly stronger for some reason that should pretty much tell the story.

Also I will deny Cloud and Sephiroth are weakening. Right here. Their performance in this contest means nothing-- rivalries in this contest that only have one or two games behind them have done poorly all around.

Nintendo looks stronger in this contest because they're a company that thrives on feeding you the same crap over and over, and thus have rivalries that show up in many many games, which is apparently the criteria that voters are using to determine whether a rivalry is good or not. So they're going to do well here because voters are dumb.

Hell, Skyrim beating Skyward Sword in a HYPE poll should turn you away from that idea.

Lol at people saying Pokemon > Cloud is an unexpected result. The way this board tries to make Pokemon into the good guy all the time is pretty hilarious.

Pokemon should've been the favorite here, based on how the contest has gone. People sticking with Cloud either were stubborn about established trends or just didn't want Pokemon to win. I said it about 100 posts ago-- Pokemon losing in a close one is the "upset" here.

(Or Mario winning tomorrow, which I'm still thinking is a possibility!)

4th edition and 3.5 do that but not to the same degree I don't think. Like there's a general upward trend of attack values and defense values but not every character of 5 levels higher is going to have +5 defense and +5 attack over their 5 levels previous self. Whereas with M&M it's not only easy to do that, but also kinda necessary otherwise the system will beat you down. The toughness system letting characters just shrug off attacks that aren't of a certain power level kinda forces you to do it.

Like I made Solid Snake as a character who used a bunch of guns straight from the book in a PL10 campaign, and I just wasn't really able to damage anything that wasn't a mook before it was softened a bit because all the guns from the book are like 4-8 power level attacks and the major enemies were designed against power 10 attacks. Designing his radar and codec and stuff out of powers was really fun, but yeah, it's a good illustration that you can't really fall behind on damage and remain fully combat viable.

Now, I realize I could've just made his guns using the power mechanics, but I just wanted to use the ones out of the book for flavor.

M&M I feel is good for short campaigns. The game doesn't really have good advancement built into the system as most of your advancement in any given level will be used on keeping your powers at maximum effectiveness, so you're basically stuck with whatever character you make to start the game unless you want to tank your effectiveness, and since defenses will be going up at roughly the same rate as offenses you don't feel more powerful unless the DM isn't leveling up what you're going against.

The combat is also really shallow I feel once your character has done all its gimmicks.

The character creation is really cool though.

Yeah bumrushing Algus is the easy way to win that fight. Don't be too scared of auto-potion-- his brave is only 31 I think so it's not going to activate that often. Even if you're not swinging for more than 30 you can still take a crack at him.

On a random note I restarted FFIX yesterday because I felt I didn't remember it well enough. I instantly remember why I love Vivi and think I might've been underrating Steiner. Game starts too slow though. I just got to Lindblum and I'm like wasting half an hour in the town just randomly wandering around and talking to people (for the third town in a row). I hope it snaps out of its "the party splits up and we make an ambiguous plot advancement condition so we can force feed you everything in this town" bit soon.

I don't believe many attacks are viable cross planes. If any. I can't think of any. Also thinking about this in terms of a fighter taking on a wizard 1v1 isn't really the right way to think about it (a well built fighter can usually one round a wizard anyway and will probably win initiative <_<). It's about how a fighter and a wizard will do in a variety of encounter situations.

Limited Wish isn't really that good. Shadow evocation/conjuration will give you most of the utility you get there at a lower slot and without burning exp.

Wizard's main advantages, outside of 9th level spells, are easier AoE, less reliance of items, easier untwinked damage, and easier utility. A lot of that utility they get isn't strictly necessary or can be covered by magic items/skills at higher levels, though. Fighter's advantages are that they're harder to shut down and actually have a much higher damage potential if built right.

As for 9th level spells, a lot of them are fine too. If you ban a handful of them 9th level spells aren't a huge problem either and I think even in a campaign where they're not banned you can create a relevant fighter

Man you can make physical classes plenty viable in 3.5. Especially at level 15, before casters have stupid level 9 spell slots. You just have to use the right items and the right prestige classes and the right feats. It's more work relatively speaking, and requires you to think more as you play at times, but doable (and arguably more difficult to hose than a caster).

I think the discrepancy is worse if you have less control over what items you get, if you don't get enough items, or don't control your stats, because physical characters just need more stats and items than spellcasters who gain relatively less from both.

Also I don't think any of the things we've seen wrong with the bracket at the start get that fixed without seeing the future. You could get a debatable match or two but talking straight up good upsets you pretty much need Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat in a place that most people wouldn't have them.

I guess if I designed the bracket pre-contest we would've had that cause I actually expected the fighting game rivalries to be strong. I probably would've totally wasted the trainers though.

In hindsight I'm seeing that this bracket could've actually been good if you could see the future and with some moving around in the bracket. Put Pokemon where Link is and put Link on the other side-- suddenly it really does look like a miracle run when it beats Mega Man, then ups the ante and beats Cloud vs Sephiroth-- people are giving it hype to beat Link at that point, and people like me are pulling their hair out and fighting Pokemon the whole way. And of course there are a lot of other things you could do like actually testing Samus and Snake, etc etc.

Oh well.

Red vs Blue's going to beat FF7 with like 55%. I don't think this is some sorta Zelda boost or FF7 drop as much as it is the FF7 duo not being helped by the format and being kinda weak-- they just haven't been tested at all.

FF7 probably flips that on Pokemon at least.

Eh, I just chalk that up to 4 ways. Auron didn't do anything too special in the last character battle.

Granted, I'd probably take all of them over Ganondorf but it's a toss up and really it's just me being biased in a toss up match because I can. Crono and Vincent would be the only two I feel terribly confident in, but he's certainly in striking range of either one.

But to your point, this match has no bearing on how I feel about Ganondorf. This format is just dumb. People are "respecting" the rivalries that have age and number of games behind them. Glorified series contest. I don't think this is a Zelda boost or even a Nintendo boost exactly-- it's just that the rivalries from your franchises that aren't Nintendo based evolve from game to game rather than being the same thing over and over, so they don't get the full power of the "series" based voting we're seeing here.

Strangely they did favor Cloud over Link today (relatively speaking) but I'm pretty sure that's just people wanting an upset really bad.
