I haven't even played the game the past two days.

I'm gonna be honest this seems to be a recurring theme as last time I took an extended hiatus it was during a raid too-- these raid events are kinda the worst thing ever and kill the enthusiasm for the game for me.

Not saying I'm going to take a hiatus, but it is curious.

I actually like Booker T's commentary more than most. Dude makes no sense at all but at least he's enthusiastic.

Which probably makes most scoff at my appraisal of announcing but whatever.

Best guy who wasn't given a shot... hmmm... not sure about Austin not sure he translates well-- would expect him to be better as a face announcer actually as his style as a heel is more about cutting dudes down and obviously you don't want to bury the guys out there. Maybe he could make it work, but I mean we've seen like, Ted Dibiase and Macho Man so it's not a given you're a good announcer if you're a good talker.

All things considered, to be an effective heel announcer, to me the recurring theme has always been that the announcer needs to have some smarminess to em. So I cross map the great smarmy characters of the past with the great talkers, but removing the more bombastic ones like Flair as they'd just overwhelm the announce position. So we're left with Chris Jericho (specifically in his shrieking conspiracy theorist character), Christian, Edge, Christopher Daniels, Disco Inferno (yes) coming to mind as potentially great. Current guys Kevin Owens and Miz could in the future be pretty great too.

I actually often hired Disco Inferno as a color commentator in TEW games set in eras where he was well past wrestling prime so yeah I think that'd actually be really awesome. Disco Inferno is my official pick. I think he's just got the perfect character for it combined with enough natural talking ability and charisma to do pretty well there.

Well that is more to my style. I usually would try to get by by stacking debuffs in the past. I was the guy who would run Mog for the Attack/Mag -50%, + Power/Magic Breakdown, + Full Break and manage to clear content without sentinel.

I also looked into it and apparently Minwu's Ultra Soul Break gives Sentinel + healing/etc? That would be pretty rad to get. Time to start hoarding up mythril-- wish I hadn't spent all of it before I stopped. Could have like 250 instead of 50 right now.

FF6->7 being a disconnect doesn't really work for me but it does enough that I understand where people are coming from.

7->8 feels more like the core of the issue is "I didn't like FF8 or FF10" than any sort of real shift existing. Just not liking a game or games is fine-- hell with FF8 you have a lot of company.

Honestly I thought Ventura had his moments as well and was generally pretty good at it. And Johnny Polo (Raven for those who didn't watch any WWE in like 93-94, and I wouldn't blame you) was underrated in this role too, for what little time he did it.

I think Corey Graves has flashes of greatness, though I don't think he'll ever reach that level on anything remotely resembling a consistent basis. Not really his fault I think it's kinda impossible to do with the current product paradigm WWE has.

(Though he does have his cringe moments too. He feels like such a creeper whenever any women are out there. And yes I do realize I was just praising King-- it's worse than him for sure, probably largely because it's not really acknowledged as creeper material by the other announcers like it was for King)

So I mean, I guess what I'm saying is I think there were actually a decent amount of good over-the-top heel commentators, even though I will always say Heenan was the best by far. I do think it's a good role, but it is something that has large backfire potential if done poorly, and it is done poorly very often unfortunately which can leave a lot of us with bad tastes in our mouths about it.

I think I summoned like twice among all my playthroughs of FFVIII and they seemed weak-- it's weird that that would be a logical end to me.

I did draw like 800 times though on my first failed playthough. So I did hate it until I read what the refiner skills did on a later playthrough.

I guess it had a bit more of a learning curve in that like, poorly optimized characters sucked a lot more than they would in some earlier games, but that's just FF8 being FF8. Arguably FF5 and FF2 would have the same problem relative to other games.

Those 3 lines being based on

1-5 + 9 - Style. Mostly setting. Lot more machines and modern elements in the other ones. They're also less whimsical and more srs bizniz in general.
1-6 (+9) - Style. Presentation. Basically NES-SNES era RPGs + 9 being optional if the poseur sells you. Characters lookin like little dudes matters to you I guess.
1-10 - Gameplay. After this you start really veering off the typical turn based systems. A lot of experimentation.

I personally put the line at 10 but I kinda accept it at 5 or 6.

I don't really see how 8 is less traditional than 7 to be honest. Like I don't even know what tangible distinction you'd make there. I feel like you draw the line after 10, after 6, or after 5 (including 9 with either of the latter two-- moreso if you draw the line between 5 and 6) for "retro" vs "modern." No other place to put that line really makes sense to me.

Really though, this isn't even a joke the more I think about it. It actually kinda makes a lot of sense to me.

FF6 is probably one of the most casual friendly FF games in terms of the mechanics, presentation, etc-- like honestly I always felt it was more casual than FF7, even though FF7 was "that mainstream one." I actually had non-RPG enthusiast friends playing (keep in mind playing doesn't mean beating) FF6 back in the day, more than FF7 had-- I think more were introduced to the series by FF7, in that FF6 didn't keep em around, but I feel like in terms of out of place randoms playing it, FF6 won out. Maybe that's just me though.

But it has always kinda feels like the game that not many are passionate about but is generally well liked-- I mean you can even see this when discussing just SNES RPGs. Chrono Trigger almost always gets more talk, and hell even friggin Earthbound of all things tends to get more it seems. FF6 just doesn't have enough indie cred or something. Every big fan of the series will tend to cling to one of the other ones.

So the point is, if you dislike most of em, suddenly "generally well liked" will rise to the top. We need some market research here.

Me personally, FFVI is upper mid tier. Probably around the edge of the top 5. I guess that means I like enough Final Fantasy games that it's not the best, but don't like enough of em that it's soundly in the middle

Seems about right. I think this is enough evidence. Theory is sound.

That's what I was getting at yeah. I can't really judge Lawler for never having had one-- cause it's not like Heenan was generating them all the time himself. It was kinda like a perfect storm and he was just a capable part of that storm that stepped up.

I can't say for sure peak Lawler could have had a similar moment if given the opportunity but I don't hold the fact that he hasn't against him either. Lawler was pretty great when he was on-- don't let the fact that probably over half of his career's commentary was on average lethargic keep that from him.

Jerry Lawler has never had a Rumble 1992 moment in his commentary, but to be fair Heenan himself hasn't really had many himself either.

Don't get me wrong I'd put Heenan over peak Lawler pretty easily but I do think Lawler deserves to be in the "good over-the-top heel commentator" category, at his best.

Unfortunate to hear about Sentinel though. I was hoping the Meta had found a way to shift away from that. I actually have it and Tyro but I don't like using Tyro. Wouldn't mind Ysh but I didn't get Stoneskin II.

Though I guess if some characters I use have a suitable replacement for Shout I could just RW Sentinel.

Yeah I'm 2-0 in disputes as the buyer. Once I bought an old DVD player through eBay for certain parts with stated broken parts in the listing but basically all the parts were broken so it was worthless. Once I bought a DVD/VCR combo on Amazon and the VCR end didn't work.

Have never needed to put much effort in to win. On the combo they didn't even want me to send back so I got a free DVD player which was cool.

I imagine the system is such that they get more cautious of you as you file more disputes.

I've been playing this a bit recently cause a friend of mine started it and was playing a lot and he was asking me advice on the Lugae fight. So I decided to play the current event and do it.

There's a LOT of high end content now -- at least I can still do up to the 160 level content so it doesn't feel I've lost ground at leastbut yeah. It's neat.

Though I'm still on the fence on really bothering to get back into it again -- is it a must to Sentinel/Stoneskin for high level content or what. That's probably the biggest reason I stopped. Feels like in theory it'd be even more necessary but maybe the key is to get your base defensive stats up I dunno.

Yeah I think 550 nukes probably screw the atmosphere up which would be the bigger concern than the actual bomb impacts-- not that that's a minor thing but it could be recovered from in time.

It's all theory at that point though. Theory I haven't read up on well enough to have a real opinion on but Fallout scenario seems plausible at least?

I haven't played Fallout and not sure why I've been tagged. I have enough of a familiarity with the setting to get a decent idea though.

I kinda feel like 500 nukes would sorta destroy the atmosphere, making the earth unlivable regardless of where they hit. I haven't really done any extensive research on this but I'm pretty sure that many bombs in that short of time would be doing a number on the o-zone, and just the amount of ash and smoke flung into the air at once is going to cause major climate issues on top of that. Nuclear winter (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_winter) and all that.

If you drop it down to 50 like you'd been doing it in later posts I don't think it'd be as bad. The "nuclear winter" wiki uses 100 nukes as the baseline to cause major climate change and such and I don't think even at 100 it is theorized to get to Fallout levels. And the number of bombs just isn't sufficient to put America at that Fallout level outright based just on the blasts, either. Coordinating restructuring efforts and such would be the first hurdle, and that becomes more difficult with NO OIL (this is probably more damaging than the bombs themselves at the 50 level), but yeah overall not nearly like fallout.

Yield of the nukes matters a lot too. Like Hiroshima bombs, a lot of the cities nuked themselves would be relatively okay, as the blast radius just isn't super huge. For example if you nuke Albuquerque with a Hiroshima bomb even the dangerous irradiated area is not covering the city because the city has a lot of surface area.

http://nuclearsecrecy.com/nukemap/classic/

That's kind of a fun thing to play with if you want an idea of what damage just the bombs cause and ignore atmospheric concerns (assuming it's accurate, anyway)

Like that's not to say that Thor vs General Zod in and of itself couldn't be an interesting discussion one time

But you do it again, because teams in mercs often fight multiple times

And then you throw say a buncha 6s and 5s on either side and literally none of them can do anything to Thor or Zod without ability nerfing, so it just boils down to Thor vs Zod again. That kinda upper level just isn't fit for mercs, doubly so when you consider TV and Movies don't really have much in the way of buffs or well defined mechanics, stuff like that.

Neo I could at least humor that maybe were he were tied up in a battle with Agent Smith that John Wick could have an impact on that fight by landing some bullets on him while he's distracted. General Zod just completely ignores him though.
