The Hateful Eight interests me mostly for its cast. I'm not a HUGE Kurt Russell fan or anything but the more movies of his I see the more he grows on me. I felt like his performance in Big Trouble in Little China (itself a pseudo-Western) was good enough to transcend being just a John Wayne impression even though the influence was clear. And then Samuel L. Jackson is Samuel L. Jackson, 'nuff said.

Seen Blazing Saddles only once, remember finding it a hoot.

I remember once Siskel & Ebert discussed the issue of colorization, and then ended the episode by flipping it around and showing a scene from Blazing Saddles in black-and-white. They thought it made the movie even funnier.

Heh, first thing I think of when it comes to the movie's reception is its trashing from Siskel & Ebert, who even named it one of the worst movies of 1996. Then again they also named Happy Gilmore there, though they didn't hate it as much it seemed.

Considering Last Man Standing has an RT score above 30% I guess it probably has its fans. I dunno.

The original True Grit wasn't an action film, at least not in THAT sense. I really enjoyed it for what it was.

That said I find it interesting that Roger Ebert gave both movies 4 stars. Not saying I think that highly of the original though.

All I knew about Young Guns was that it was fairly popular when it came out but that Siskel & Ebert both panned it and it has a low RT score (41% on looking it up). Kind of surprised it landed so high but I guess people have nostalgia for a lot of '80s films?

I was trying to think of the last '80s movie I watched that I did not like. It was The Presidio, which I found to be junk beyond its action scenes, cinematography, and Sean Connery's performance. The whole romance between Mark Harmon and Meg Ryan takes up way too much of the film and the plot amounts to a piss-poor excuse for a thriller. I would rather re-watch Rise of Skywalker.

True but people were talking about *Captain Marvel* more a month after its release. And not just negatively. Could arguably be because the MCU was riding momentum from Infinity War, but still.

The joke being there's as much time between those movies' releases as between those of Shanghai Noon and The Searchers. The TLJ vs. Godfather comparison is only 1 year off - otherwise I was thinking of making the analogy TLJ vs. The Exorcist.

I don't really think I'm a comic nerd at all, I know next to nothing that isn't in the movies. I just think the Harley character is kinda thin to basically be the center of three movies. Like somebody said, she's basically a meme machine instead of having actual depth, which was great at first but it's kinda wearing thin on me now.

I get why she has broad appeal, I'm just personally kinda over it.

I enjoyed Robbie in Wolf of Wall Street and Once Upon A Time in Hollywood but I don't really know about Harley Quinn. I mean, she was one of the best aspects of Suicide Squad, but Uma Thurman as Poison Ivy is one of the best aspects of Batman & Robin so that statement is meaningless.

Yes I have actually seen Batman & Robin. It was such a hot mess I don't regret it one iota, although I don't have any problems with the campiness of Schumacher's Batman films at all. The execution is what sucks.

Yeah I hate it when that critical dissonance narrative is pushed when it's probably just a relatively few "hardcore" fans blowing it out of proportion or just being contrarian in general. See Batman v. Superman or The Last Jedi for examples. Even worse if you're using the Rotten Tomatoes audience scores as indicators otherwise you'd be left with the impression that casual moviegoers loved stuff like the Death Wish remake, many of the Disney live-action remakes, The Rise of Skywalker, and Terminator: Dark Fate.

Although my brother thinks Batman v. Superman was never going to be a big blockbuster movie because of it following on from Man of Steel or something?

Also there's no more novelty and the stuff that drew people to the first movie besides that like Will Smith, Batman and The Joker are MIA. Plus this movie is rated R which I was not even aware of, yet cost $185 million to make, probably because there's a CGI character featured prominently? And there are like no big names in the movie - Margot Robbie just isn't a leading lady and what's the last hit Stallone headlined that wasn't a Rocky or Expendables movie?

It also just struck me that Birds of Prey has the 4th-highest Rotten Tomatoes score of the DCEU. Wow. I get the feeling these last few DCEU movies were greenlit hoping the brand would be stronger by now which suffice to say has not happened yet.
