I just watched The Last Voyage of the Demeter again and it's still tragic that movie flopped as bad as it did, because it's awesome. (and on Showtime!)

Heh Universal's biggest flops last year involved vampires and krakens.

Tbf the movies cost so little to make. Your comment also reminds me of how I once caught the Tom Cruise Mummy on TV and gave up 5 minutes in. And I watched the entirety of The Lost World: Jurassic Park under similar circumstances. And then I realize both those movies share a screenwriter, David Koepp. Quite an unlucky bastard.

Not really horror-related, but I saw The Towering Inferno for the first time this month (dad wanted to show it to the family so he purchased it for 4 on Prime Video) and Independence Day for the second time, then realized the former movie's director's next film was a King Kong remake and the latter's was a Godzilla remake. Nice coincidence! Honestly did not plan it out that way!

I'll save my thoughts on both movies for if someone wants to know since they aren't horror.

can't speak for anyone else but basically all my horror watching right now is the 80s horror list which I can't speak much about.

I DID watch Lisa Frankenstein though (which isn't really horror comedy in the tradtional sense as much as horror-inspired comedy a la Ghostbusters)

There was a very strong Edward Scissorhands/Beetlejuice vibe to it in the way that I think it's going to be a really big cult favorite in like 20 years with whatever replaces the Hot Topic teens at that point. Very weird and silly with weird pacing and writing (not bad, just odd). I had a great time with it

Tbh, I will say on this topic that Get Out did a really good job balancing horror and comedy and even intertwining them both together. Honestly regarding the earlier movies I brought up for comparison, I'm probably just more into the subject matter.

Honestly that is the level on which I really appreciated Get Out. As a "simple" movie in the vein of the four I mentioned. I just have a tendency to view Jaws, Star Wars, Halloween, and Alien as collectively the four high-concept genre movies that upended the Hollywood landscape at the time.

Yeah I think I'm probably just not into most of the movies that hit it big either financially or critically at the time. Not entirely relevant to this topic but over the past two years I've seen a bunch of late 2010s movies for the first time - other examples being Wonder Woman, The Shape of Water, and Parasite. I did like all four of the movies in question to be fair.

Since Jason Blum is in the topic name, I saw Get Out for the first time last month and was very impressed by it...but I also think it's a bit of a joke the movie could win an Oscar for its script when movies in the past like Jaws, Halloween, Alien, and Predator couldn't even get nominated. Not really a referendum on Get Out itself, more on the cinema landscape of the time - am I the only one who thinks 2015-2018 might be the absolute worst four-year stretch of time for movies?

Also, I know I was laughed at for suggesting that Black Panther is what truly cemented the MCU as a pop culture juggernaut...my key word is CEMENTED. Obviously the first Avengers was huge, but then the second and third Hunger Games movies outgrossed every MCU movie released in their respective years...kinda funny given The Marvels getting curbstomped by another Hunger Games movie.

At the very least I feel like people were generally talking more about Hunger Games in 2013 and 2014 than the MCU. And then Star Wars in 2015-2017.

I liked episode 3 of What If S2 the best so far, but I feel like the point of divergence was rather weak and at first I was rolling my eyes at the Die Hard pastiches. Good character work (particularly regarding Happy and Hammer and maybe Agent Hill) and the superhero twists helped to elevate it above a mere homage to Die Hard in the end.

So am I the only one who thinks The Marvels bombed through relatively little fault of its own ("relatively" compared to something like The Flash or the new Indiana Jones movie)? I feel like MCU movies typically depend bigtime on opening weekend so Disney's inability to market it to the mainstream basically destroyed it. I can't imagine the release of a Hunger Games movie in its second weekend could've helped since even though this particular one had a male lead, the original films seemed to depend more on female audiences compared to other action-type blockbusters so it could have cut into that demographic that carried the first Captain Marvel to box-office glory.

It feels like even the anti-progressives gave The Marvels little coverage and then moved on from it fast, at least compared to the first movie.

I feel like bringing up a vocal minority who finds Prey to be more social justice garbage and basically the same as "Kathleen Kennedy Star Wars". Criticism of the movie is fine, but that is messed up on so many levels. I personally think it's by far the best Predator movie after the original and probably even the best movie I've seen to come out since Mad Max: Fury Road.

On another note, last January I saw the horror movies End of Days, What Lies Beneath, and Deep Rising on Disney+. I wouldn't necessarily say any of them were good, but I was glad I saw them anyway. The last of those is one heck of a guilty pleasure (as is the same director's Van Helsing, but not to the same extent), and the former two I felt were worth watching just to spend time with my two favorite actors Harrison Ford and Arnold Schwarzenegger (oh and props to Michelle Pfeiffer too). Also BTW Disney was always the international distributor of End of Days and it acquired the international distribution rights to What Lies Beneath from Fox - both were distributed by Universal domestically.

I think a lot of the issue here is I consume the MCU only casually, which is why I'm comparatively less down on a lot of the pandemic-era movies and shows - the only Disney+ series I know I didn't like out of what I've seen is Loki somewhat strangely, although Wandavision, What If?, and Moon Knight are all borderline cases (the middle especially was VERY hit-or-miss). That wound up biting me in the butt with Secret Invasion due to it following on from Captain Marvel in a pretty jarring manner, to the point where my #1 gripe with this series is how poor of a follow-up it is to that movie.

I guess I have a bit of a reputation on this board for being disappointed in Captain Marvel? I didn't hate it but I felt like it should have been a lot better than it was - how do you take a character that is like a cross between Superman, Samus, and RoboCop and make her so freaking boring? Even Ms. Marvel made her look way cooler than her own movie did. More just clarifying for those who might be confused if they thought I made it look like Captain Marvel was some unsung classic in the previous paragraph. It's more about me having issues with the current era of MCU releases suffering from both continuity lockout AND having too many moving parts - and for that matter I always felt the former issue was overstated (e.g. I was able to jump straight into Thor: Ragnarok from The Avengers without feeling too confused and then likewise right to Infinity War, although maybe it helped that I had seen Age of Ultron and Civil War before even if I didn't really remember the details), though I have a feeling the franchise's general pop culture ubiquity and having grown up on superhero cartoons (and I mean Justice League by that) made me evidently better-equipped than a lot of people.

Somehow I was a lot less infuriated by the second episode compared to the first. Might have even liked it...except that six-episode count is really looming over the whole thing. Even regardless of having already looked up what happens in the rest (well, as in skimming the TV Tropes page), it's not hard to worry about whether some big reveals from this episode will get properly developed. The filmmaking and acting are good, at least aside from Emilia Clarke.

I'm more curious than anything. I didn't hate it but it came off as pretty toothless to me, to the point where I'm amazed there was "controversy" surrounding the movie being offensive because the only thing offensive about the movie was how inoffensive it was. Forget the Taxi Driver comparisons, stuff like A Clockwork Orange and The Wolf of Wall Street are frankly better Joker movies. I'm still glad the movie was made and that lots of people saw it though, but stuff like this makes me amazed at how easily offended people can get.
