That really does not help. The dumb thing is my mom is a big LOTR fan and even she thinks it's a plot hole. Another one: I really hate it when people act like the first Death Star's weakness is a plot hole and thought it was unnecessary when Rogue One revealed it was an inside job. Consequently I also loathe how quick people are to claim the Holdo maneuver from The Last Jedi could have been used against the Death Star. Yes, an attack that has a narrow chance to work (this is obvious even from TLJ, don't need no Rise of Skywalker) against something with an extremely minuscule weak point? Heck, people keep joking about how the Empire couldn't protect the Death Star's weak point when the defenses leading up to it were the whole reason the rebels had to fly through the trench, and, again, IT WAS AN INCREDIBLY SMALL WEAK POINT! Maybe people are getting the Death Stars from the original trilogy confused? --- Why do people act like the left is the party of social justice crusaders? |

For instance, why do people act like the eagles could have always flown the One Ring into Mt. Doom? Presumably it would have been better-defended earlier in the story and was only vulnerable at the end of Return of the King because most of Sauron's armies had been defeated. --- Why do people act like the left is the party of social justice crusaders? |

One thing I liked about Kylo Ren was specifically that he's learning as things go and especially in TLJ is trying to forge his own path - it gives him room for character development in a way Darth Vader didn't have in the original trilogy. Not saying that Kylo was a better villain than Vader though, more just that it was nice to see something different there. I honestly kind of hate it when people criticize Kylo for being a "wimp" of sorts when that's precisely the point of the character - first he's trying to live up to Vader and then he decides to forget it and just carve his own mark on the galaxy. Instead you have people like The Critical Drinker force identity politics into this and insist that Kylo is a sissy because Rey isn't allowed to lose. Wow, great logic. On that note, while I was glad about TFA's "diverse" leading cast when the movie came out I otherwise never really gave a crap about that aspect of the sequel trilogy and I wonder if Rose and Holdo would be such infamous characters if they weren't played by a performer of Asian descent and had purple hair respectively. And I'm no fan of either character myself. I do think Disney shouldn't have made such a big deal about the diversity of the films' casts but it was at least understandable given before the franchise had gotten a bad rep among some for under-representing women and POC (which I don't really agree with, at least for the OT since those movies were, well, old). --- Why do people act like the left is the party of social justice crusaders? |

Now I feel like it's more effort than it's worth and amounts to doing the director's homework for him. The way people talk you'd think the game's plot is bad because it makes Samus look weak, which insinuates that making a heroine weak is automatically bad writing. Needless to say, I have problems with that. People just found it convenient to jump all over Other M for that because the game came out during Twilight-mania so it was guilty by association. At least accusing the game for sexism that way is understandable due to Samus's position as a feminist gaming icon. TBH Other M's story flaws come largely from using the same storytelling format as Fusion which is incredibly jarring with the advanced presentation. We're supposed to believe that Samus admires a glorified hate sink? No thanks. Adam makes Vice Admiral Holdo look like a good character. --- Why do people act like the left is the party of social justice crusaders? |

Dread might be a good opportunity for me to get back in. Since it'll probably inevitably come up, I have a very good feeling I would not like Metroid: Other M if I ever replayed it and that I was just excited over the game when it came out. I watched ProtonJon stream the whole game last year and was astounded at how bad the story was, albeit with the caveat that sexism wasn't the primary culprit. I don't deny that Super Metroid wasn't that strong in 2009, but that honestly might have been Metroid's contest nadir as a franchise. In less than two years Metroid Prime went from losing to a GTA game to giving Fallout 3 fits and has never looked back since.
