I think the strat might be to play 6-6 after finishing SOJ, but like......very long after. Because 6-5 is so much to digest and playing 6-6 right after it showcases its weaknesses hardcore. I do have to give 6-6 props (SOJ minor spoilers) for being the only case in SOJ to have Maya as Phoenix's investigation partner. What's the point of Maya being back without classic Phoenix/Maya banter!

I think it only makes sense to play it at the end because it's after Apollo has left the agency, but yeah, 6-5 is a tough act to follow.

I feel like the 3DS games - perhaps after the backlash of AJ - are a bit afraid to develop the main characters/take them into new places, which is why Phoenix feels a bit off and Athena is introduced and developed in DD but turned into an afterthought in SOJ. Apollo gets development, but it's in very heavy handed ways that can be emotionally satisfying but also kind of awkwardly implemented

Honestly, Phoenix as a character ran his course at the end of T&T, but with how poorly received AJ was, the only real move to revive the series was to bring him back in a mentor-like role. I think they did a great job with his role in SoJ though.

And I think they learned after DD that having three separate lawyers for 6 cases max is completely unsustainable because one character is going to wind up with the short end of the stick in terms of relevance, which is why SoJ ends with Apollo staying in Khura'in.

One of the things I really love about Ace Attorney is that it has so much heart and sophistication behind the writing. This is very obvious with the Original Trilogy.

I said this in transience's topic, but Takumi's specialty has always been character writing. PW1 at its core is a very simple story about Phoenix and Edgeworth, but it works because Takumi manages to endear you completely to both of them by the end.

His scenario writing has become a little hit or miss since the OT, but he hasn't lost his touch with character writing at all.

I do consider 6-5 to be two separate cases but calling 6-3 two separate cases is a huge stretch imo

Oh, I don't consider 6-3 to be two separate cases, but they technically are since the first trial is about Tahrust's death and the second is about Rheel Nehmu's death.

The music is mostly great; probably the most I've enjoyed an AA soundtrack in a while. Susato's theme is very VERY good.

Every Susato theme is great. And yeah, the fact that we only get to hear the Ryutaro Objection theme for one tutorial case is a darn shame, right up there with only getting Courtroom Revolutionnaire 2016 for 6-4!

I mean, it doesn't have 6 cases proper because there was always going to be a DLC case.

and technically SoJ has 8 separate cases since 6-3 and 6-5's second days are different charges than the first

I don't have a problem with 6-5 being one giant case because it's essentially dealing with the same thing.

I don't mind 6-6 as much as some people because I can just enjoy the sheer nostalgic value of it, even if the actual case itself is nothing special.

G2-4 blending into G2-5 just feels like how 6-5 should have been handled. Nobody with a brain would have thrown a fit if SoJ had 6 cases on paper.

Yeah, 5-4 is a good case with a non-traditional ending, which I think is part of the reason people have a hard time grading it on its own. It's basically the only case where the culprit isn't revealed at the end. I've never had an issue with taking it as a whole without factoring in the other cases it's clearly connected to, but that's just me.

Gregson and Soseki have the exact same damage animation, except Gregson spills his fish and chips everywhere. It was kind of surreal to see them at the exact same time when you point out the first contradiction in their testimony.

I feel like 5-4 is one of the more underappreciated cases in the series at this point.

Not that it's necessarily a top tier case, but it's still quite good.

My only issue with G1-5 the cat door thing is that I'm PRETTY sure the game lies to you. I am pretty sure that door had like a handle on it and was clearly not a cat door in the cutscene. Other than that, I thought it was an absolutely brilliant twist.

The door definitely has a handle on it, but it's also the only cat door we see from that side. I guess it's possible it makes them all that way, for some reason...? But either way, I agree with you. It was a great Susato moment.

I didn't take it as Pat strangling Roly. She's just waking him up, albeit rather forcefully. It's actually one long scarf that they're both wearing together. The Beates are awesome. A rare happy couple for the series.

"By sweet poison did he seeketh to end my life"

one of my writing pet peeves is when stories use Middle English but don't understand the rules of its grammar

the "-eth" or "-th" ending operates basically the same as just the "-s" ending on a verb, so in modern English, that sentence would read "By sweet poison did he seeks to end my life" which is of course totally wrong

this hath been LeonhartFour's English soapbox

Questions -
1.Is Rei supposed to be a reference to Maya? her animations look very similar
2.How did he even poison her? It was never mentioned. Poisoned the water when she didn't look?
3.How did she get a hold of his pen?

Also a stupid nitpick-
I didn't like how the judge knew it was Susato all along
Yes I know it's supposed to be a "ha ha he knew" scene and not something very serious
But it still bothers me
Because a judge must follow the law. Even if he thinks said law is stupid. This is the very idea of a judge

I didn't really get "Maya" vibes from her. If anything, it feels like she's meant to be yuri bait for Susato. I can only imagine the amount of fanfiction about the two of them that has arisen and will continue to arise from this case!

He does mention that he did it when he was confronting her in the hut. He doesn't say exactly how he distracted her so she didn't notice what he was doing, but he got so nervous she would catch him that he dropped the pen afterwards, which is how she got a hold of it. I guess he thought it would look suspicious if he knelt down to pick up his pen, or he just didn't realize he had done it until afterwards.

Also, Susato's dad and the judge are long time friends, which they referenced during the case. The judge himself also seems to be really frustrated by how hamstrung their legal system is, which is probably another reason he was willing to let one slide.

And with that, G2-1 complete! I think the pacing and the mystery itself were better in this intro case as opposed to G1-1, but Menimemo doesn't compare to Brett as a villain.

I love how everyone bows respectfully to mourn the loss of Auchi's "sprig of hope," including Hosonaga, who randomly reappeared for no reason.

also I don't know if that poem right before he cut it was supposed to be a haiku but if so the last part had one syllable too many

Hmmm...I guess I kinda get why Menimemo tried to stab Brett to cover the poison's tracks, but I don't know why he thought anyone would suspect him in particular. Nobody even realized he was there! If anything, it would probably mean Soseki got to match Maya's record for number of times as a defendant since it would rule out Rei as a suspect!

Menimemo's damage animation reminds me of Luke Atmey's breakdown, and he even repeats his dialogue word for word both times, like Atmey did.

Actually, this guy kind of reminds me of Atmey overall, too, with his rambling pseudo-professionalism.

I'm sure it'll happen eventually since AAT was a big success for the series in terms of sales, but who knows when they'll actually announce it.

I mean, Blackquill and Kanji are at different points on the vocal range!

Pretty much every major VA in Dual Destinies is a well known voice actor. Phoenix Wright is Sam Riegel, Miles Edgeworth is Kyle Hebert, and Athena Cykes is Wendee Lee, for instance.

Gina said she removes them before the omnibus takes off so she can fit under the seat, and presumably, she puts them back when the omnibus gets back so no one gets wise to her scheme. Either that, or poor Beppo gets stuck doing it!

Yeah, I can see why Auchi didn't want to present that second photograph because, as Membami points out, it's highly suspicious to have a photo from behind the victim only moments after she was stabbed in the back. Plus, the lens is cracked.

this isn't quite on the tier of "the victim misspelled Maggey's name with a broken neck" in terms of self-defeating evidence but I wonder if Auchi understood the implications of that picture or not

We have a couple more Dahlia Hawthorne parallels here for Jezaille Brett. First, she's clutching supposedly decisive evidence in her hand that was actually full of poison, and said poison was recently stolen from the university laboratory.

I wonder if Susato visiting the grave at the beginning is supposed to mislead the player into thinking it's her father's until she mentions Kazuma at the end

but the fact that her father is alive and well during this case is a big red flag that whatever happened at the end of GAA1 is not all it appears to be

This is the longest it takes until the discovery of the crime, in any case. 6-5 is a weird situation because there isn't a criminal case on the first day because the victim's death is presumed to be an accident initially.
