There's no spoilers in my post. Just that a really terrible person is coming much later on. And that I love Caputo.

Pornstache was the worst prison employee for the longest time until another person comes in around Season 4. Really all of the employees are terrible people and flat out suck except Lauren Lapkus' character and sometimes Luschek.

Caputo doesn't count though. He's one of the best characters in the show in general.

What I mean is that in many of the korean movies I've seen, there isn't a happy aspirational ending - the good guys lose.

Ohhhh. I missed that last part. I think it's more what this poster said:

g0ldie posted...
idk if it's necessarily that their movies are morbid or that they're known for their morbid movies in the west, so it kinda seems that way because it's what we're looking for.

If anything most of the movies that are popular-ish here are the painfully unfunny rom-coms, historical epics, or gangster flicks. Even more so if they star some idol moving into the acting realm.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_highest-grossing_films_in_South_Korea

Most of those fall under one of those three categories I mentioned before. The outliers are Bong Joon-ho and Park Chan-wook because they are the most critically acclaimed and well respected directors in the country. The only non Bong/Park movie there that would go with the morbid route would be The Wailing.

I think it's just that Bong/Park and Lee Chang-dong and the like are so fucking phenomenal that they translate very well to foreign audiences and it can cloud a person's view of what Korean cinema is actually like.

The culture here is under incredible societal pressure from work, familial expectations, body expectations, romantic expectations, and it's incredibly competitive here.

So seeing a person you really want to root for overcome all of those obstacles is kind of like a reflection of the viewer. Like "Hey, if they can do that, there is still hope" kinda thing.

Ngl this seems to be true. My MIL just keeps fucking buying milk because she thinks I like it, but the only reason I drink so much is because she buys so much and I dont want it to go to waste.

Our Lotte Mart has been importing Denmark Goat Milk and it's phenomenal. It's not as heavy or filling as the cow milk sold here either. Try and get some of that if you start to feel bloated. I'm sure your big city marts will carry it unlike us plebs down south. Maybe she'll start getting that instead?

Or is it something else?

She was a massive support of the #MeToo movement and #BelieveWomen.

Then a black woman (Aurora Perrineau, Harold's daughter) accused Lena's white friend and coworker of rape.

Lena literally called her a liar.

Then much later came out and "apologized" but the story died quickly. Hardly anyone talked about it really.

I mean that, the OBJ incident, the nearly total lack of any black characters in her show and her reasoning behind that? She's not called on that nearly enough tbh.

That's crazy. And in a rural small community too. Either the killer is long gone or those people are oblivious that someone they've seen around is a killer.

They've been pretty active about trying to find their killer. They came close with this sex-offender and it really looked like he was the one but I think he had an alibi.

We have had quite a few national-headline unsolved murders. Two from IU Lauren Spierer (no body found but.....yeah...) and Jill Beherman went unsolved for like 6-7 years. The latter's murderer just got released a couple years back.

We also had Jim Jones start in Indy and the Sylvia Likens torture murder. We are a dark, dark state. >_>

Yeah, I'm sad I only heard he had a show after he'd stepped down but watching it on youtube he really is miles above any host this side of the pond or in America. Rarely, if ever, actually an interview and just banter. His travels around are pretty great and what I loved about his and Conan's show as well.

Plus the shameless flirting with hot women was always amusing to see.

I always liked when his friends would be on the show like Hugh Laurie or Peter Capaldi or Shirley Manson or Kristen Bell. It was so resfreshing.

I think it's funny how Conan and Ferguson both get away with flirting with female guests because it's painfully obvious they are doing it to elicit humor and not actually make the guest pressured. And, in Conan's case, when he finds out he has gone too far, immediately stops and apologizes.

America was really spoiled by those two. And prime Stewart/Colbert.

I don't necessarily agree with him 100% but calling him a scumbag is a bit heavy handed.

Terry Crews is scum though.

He rightfully came out with his being a victim of sexual assault and wanted everyone to believe him. People mocked him but Gabrielle Union came out as one of his earliest and biggest supporters.

Then she came out about the abuse she had suffered on the show they were both on and Terry's immediate response was to claim his experience wasn't like that on the show, not support her at all, then said some bullshit about how the only woman he cares about/supports is his wife.

His is scum. He's a piece of shit. He hid behind his nice guy faade so we all thought he really was this nice guy. But he's a two-faced piece of shit who will turn on anyone so long as he's career isn't in jeopardy.

What more do they need to mention other than slavery and the civil rights movement? I don't know what they teach in American history class but over here, it's always been a pretty broad-strokes approach. From what I remember from history class, it went Greeks/Romans -> Dark Ages -> Renaissance -> Golden Age -> American Revolution -> French Revolution -> Napoleon -> Colonization -> World War 1 -> World War 2 -> Cold War.

Coming from a former American history teacher, the issue is that those topics you mentioned aren't solely about white men. And that's what the textbooks focus on almost exclusively.

The foundation and creation of America wasn't just white men. Our whole thing is that we were a culmination of people from all over the world. American history isn't "white history". It's only white history when it's only taught from white perspectives.
