Not all Koreans view dogs as just livestock. It's more of an older generation thing (50 and up). The younger generations view dogs as pets more and more. It's why the dog-meat industry is doing badly actually.

Rika_Furude posted...
You should respect the culture while there. There is no reason to respect the culture if you arent there though

Yes, a guest in a country should respect their hosts. I'm living in Korea. I will bow to my elders and speak in the formal tone. I will defer to my superiors to not cost them to lose face in public. I will do all of that.

But I will hate on the dog-meat industry here. There's no regulation. There's no rules. Nothing. Like I've mentioned before I've had older co-workers who have lost pet dogs over the years (who've said it wasn't uncommon back in the day for dog restaurants to dog-nap). I've seen conditions the yellow-dogs live in first hand. I've seen an old man take a dog out and hit it over the head with a club to kill it before prepping it for food in plain view of an elementary school.

I'm not against people eating meat. Eat whatever animal you want. But do it properly. Don't hunt animals into extinction. Don't kill massive animals for ONE part of the body and leave the rest to rot. Give your livestock livable conditions. Kill them humanely and safely. Not hitting them with blunt instruments in front of children.

I'll say that about any country for any animal. I do say that about America. Fuck the factory farms and what they do to chickens, pigs, cows, etc.... It's disgusting.

Even on a human-focused argument. The lack of regulations for the dog-meat market here need an overhaul for health and safety issues regardless of "respecting the culture". I'm going out on a limb and saying the skeletal dogs with mangy fur are not good for human consumption.

There is a point of respecting the culture and I don't hate Korea for having dog restaurants.

I do hate how the places will have a literal chicken coop where the dogs are living on top of one another/can't even move before being taken out to be killed.

I'm not against eating meat but if you are going to do it, give them some form of respect. Cows, goats, chicken, sheep, dogs, etc... Just be as humane as possible.

Or do they have, like, wild dogs that they hunt in the woods and on the plains?

'Yellow dog' is the official meat dog but some places will use any dog they have available.

I've had coworkers here who've said they've lost pet dogs to dog-meat owners years ago.

But nowadays with the younger generations, the idea of eating dog is considered taboo. The only time I hear of my students or younger coworkers eating dog is if their grandparents make it and even then the amount is in the single digits. And I work in a pretty rurual area.

I don't think you would need to rush or even feel rushed if you had a plan. It doesn't need to be down-to-the-minute schedule (unless you really try to see everything the city has to offer in one day), just knowing ahead of time where you intend to go and having a good enough idea where those things are and how to get around. Basically, don't just go to Busan with nothing particular on your agenda. When I went to Mokpo for the day, we moved at a fairly leisurely pace and didn't really even stay all day. We got there by 10:00 am and were leaving by 6:00 pm and we still managed to have lunch, climb a mountain, go to two small museums, and a few other sights. I really think KTX makes day trips feasible even as far from Seoul as Busan.

Yeah but Mokpo is SUPER tiny compared to Busan. You can kinda get away with moving a bit slower there.

Something similar to this happened when I was in undergrad forever ago.

Guy and girl at this party. The guy is wasted. The girl was sober. She took him somewhere and they had sex apparently. She freaks out because she had a boyfriend. A week later, she accuses the guy of raping her so her bf doesn't find out she cheated on him. There is no investigation. He gets expelled from school for his senior year.

A bunch of us get pissed because we saw them both that night and knew she was sober and the aggressive one. This feminist group we were in (that the rapist girl was in as well) went around with a petition to protest his expulsion and tried to act as witnesses for the guy. Eventually he was able to come to an arrangement where he could finish the rest of his classes by correspondence and he was allowed to graduate. We tried to push for her to be expelled but he told us not to go further with it.

So yeah there are some crazy feminists out there but some of us are rational too. And we ended up kicking that girl out and never acknowledged her again.

Tom was always intimidating to me. He had the brains, the calm demeanor. People didn't expect much out of him which is a benefit. Plus he was a lawyer. He could see things and oversee operations from a much different perspective.

Ok but now here is the thing. You are talking about a disenfranchised people. Leading up to the protests, you have had a string of deaths by police officers with no justice being done. You had a police officer shoot a man in the back, plant evidence, have this recorded in its entirety and it took two years for the office to be found guilty. A child was shot in a playground. A man in Walmart (where they sell guns) was shot. A man was driving, pulled over and shot without any connection to a crime. Another man was shot while telling the police officer that he had a legal firearm and this was recording by his girlfriend. You had a man choked to death on camera.

All of these things have happened and nothing was done or, if they were, after long periods of time. What can they do? Voting? Gerrymandering. Protests? Run over by cars.

I am from the Bible Belt where the recurring opinion is that "these people" should protest peacefully. And then they do something like this and that is the response they get. What is even more shocking is that the response to kneeling for a song is being met with such hate and those same responses of disgust were not there when innocent people were killed.

You say all it does is piss off the multitudes of people who love the flag and what it represents. But I bet good money if they are drunk at a stadium, they aren't totally quiet. They aren't giving their full attention. There are conversations being had.

I guarantee you if you play the National Anthem, in its entirety with no forewarning to the crowd, those people who love and respect the flag would start complaining.

Now I'm obviously not saying this is what you would do or grouping you in with people like this. But to have THIS been an issue of people kneeling in protest of police brutality when none of those offended people have ever brought up a "Kick people out who wear hats/talk during the anthem/not holding their hand over their heart during the anthem/anything else where they are not staring straight at the flag..." is a telling sign.

And this is directly to you Skye and you know this is said without any hate or malice. But I guarantee you that you have stood for the Anthem and have been around people doing something other than giving their full attention/etc... to the flag. Now if you have never called them out every time you have witnessed this, but these protests are what really set you off? Then I really question your dedication to this issue.

TLDR: I've known Skye for years and I wrote a shit ton of things. Y'all can just bypass it. >_>

And Skye, did you get this offended when Tim Tebow kneeled for the anthem? Do you think Nate Boyer (who helped reach a compromise with Kaep about kneeling instead of sitting) is shitting on American even though he is a vet? And can you explain how exactly kneeling is something disrespectful? Kneeling in our Western culture happens in the Church (for communion), when proposing, and praying. And none of those are considered disrespectful. So why in this one instance is kneeling disrespectful? And how is it different than Tebow?

Taking a knee in protest is not the same as taking a knee in reverence. That's like asking why a strike is good in bowling, but bad in baseball. It's about context.

As for the part in bold, it's happened before.

1. Are you saying that you can't protest something you have reverence for?

2. So you are of the opinion that Nate Boyer is disrespecting his country?

3. Also your strike analogy doesn't work. Strikes are both good and bad in baseball depending on the person.

Conservatives are the 'new' easily triggered snowflakes now? It's getting harder, and harder to keep up.

Conservatives have always tried silencing or banning things that have hurt their feelings.

Imagine believing this

Conservatives have never tried banning Halloween, Pokemon, or Harry Potter?

Or alcohol. >_>

TC are there any animal cafes near you? Those can be nice for playing with animals but in a non-depressing environment.

If you and her both bond over a love of animals, then for a much further down the line date, you two could volunteer at a shelter by walking the dogs.

Try wearing a swastika and telling everyone that it's just four crooked lines.

See, the Nazis stole the swastika. Nowadays, it actually is the symbol of a Nazi, nothing symbolic about it.

Nice attempt at a dodge, but no.

People see that symbol and they see the hatred which it stood for. You can't get around symbolism as a fact of life. It'd be like a Deaf person saying that there is no such thing as sound.

Anyone who sees hatred in a horizontal swastika is a fucking moron who are ignorant/shitting on the men and women who died fighting the Nazi's. If someone can't tell the difference between a religious symbol and the Nazi swastika, they have no right to argue about respecting WW2 vets.

Honestly want to know what you think.

that whole family is fucked in the head

Eh, Kim Jong Un hasnt really ever done anything crazy. He is just a typical dictator. Kim Jong Il though used to kidnap European movie stars and force them to act in movies he wrote lol

That was a South Korean director/actress couple he did that to. Not European. When he needed white people to act in his movies, he used the handful of American GI's who defected to North Korea.

He did kidnap women from all over the world, literally from all types of countries, and put them in private houses/colonies where the only people they could interact with were Kim himself and a few house servants. Some of the girls went years before seeing their fellow kidnapped neighbors.
