Exactly why we suck at it. We haven't done it all our lives cause we dont live in that kind of environment. Texas doesnt have a bunch of snow plows at the ready cause it would be pointless to have them since we dont get snow except on super rare occasions. No one buys snow shovels becaus ewe dont get snow.

This is dangerous and not being over dramatic because we dknt have the experience of snow and ice. So obviously it is gonna be more dangerous for us.

Dude, just drive slow. Brake early and brake often. It isn't that complicated to not drive stupid. If you've driven in very heavy rain then that's a decent starting point for understanding how the roads will feel. I mean, obviously the roads will be worse than during a thunderstorm, but it's something I'm sure you can relate to.

I mean, yeah you can get really good at driving in the snow. Like doing donuts in a huge snow covered parking lot is a ton of fun. I used to pull my e brake going around turns when the roads were empty at night. Making your car fishtail can be pretty fun too.

The point is that driving safe should just be common sense. Start slow and increase speed until you no longer feel in control. It can be more complicated than that, but it really doesn't need to be.

If walmart never restocked at night, the shelves would look that bare before the week is up

It makes sense that it's be bare if a weeks worth of cram shopping happens in a couple days

You guys act like snow removal equipment is a save all to this. Often times that equipment can't keep up with the weather. People still need to deal with this stuff. Extreme snow storms can still take many days or even a week or two for snow removal to catch up.

This topic started with a tweet showing off the hoarding people are up to over this. It is ridiculous. No reason to hoard like that.
keep up with the weather? they dont even attempt to do that in my area. snow plows dont even go out until the snow stops, and even then they just do interstates and ramps.

my area got a foot and a half of snow a few years back, never seen that much snow in my life before and apparently the last time we'd gotten that amount was in the 80s. it took my city a week to "clear" major roads. and by clear i mean that it went from "impossible to drive" to "well you're gonna fuck up your car". secondary streets never got cleared. side roads never got cleared. neighborhoods never got cleared. so even though those main streets were "cleared", unless you had a truck you'd never make it to them...

it took two weeks for the snow to melt.

It really is weird how elitist people who live in places like Minnesota can get when it comes to winter.

I say this as someone who lives even farther north than that. I can absolutely understand Texas isn't equipped to handle what's happening and there's no reason to act like they should be and mock them for not.

It's because they want recognition for the same problems they deal with every year "see what I deal with every year" but they have to hide that it's a problem so they say they're pros at handling it.

I live in MN - an inch of snow in texas is more damaging than a foot in MN. The state spends millions annually on plows, salt, treatments, etc. to make the roads usable again. It's really quite impressive.

How long have you been in MN?

Yeah they do a lot of work to clear the roads, but there have been many winters where it has still been a struggle. Some years are pretty extreme.

What's with this snow elitism

Growing up in Colorado there was a 1 month period the state ran out of funding for plowing. It was chaos.

There were moguls on my street. No one without a 4wd suv could go anywhere. We are not superior, you're just as bad of a driver as a texan. You would wuss out too if the warmest thing you owned was a light cotton sweater

Why is it so freaking cold and why is it snowing in places it normally doesnt? My weather app has constantly said it feels like -15 for days and thats completely not normal here (Im not in Texas).

Most people dont have winter cars or tires and they dont own snow shovels. Thats a lot of snow if you dont own a shovel to move it. They dont have snowblowers and many of the people in southern states dont own any clothes heavier than a sweatshirt.

Where are you from?

Even up here the quality of snow removal can vary. Yeah interstates tend to get priority as well as the busier roads. Side streets in rural areas can be iffy.

The city of St. Paul in particular is really bad at snow removal on its side streets and they can't have winter parking bans, because many homes over there don't have much for driveways to park their cars. Street parking is about all there is.

Snow removal in Minneapolis and any surrounding suburb tends to be much better than within St. Paul.

Some people act like their understanding is bad. Snowy/icy conditions are dangerous in the south because the infrastructure is not equipped to handle it and people are simply not used to driving in those kind of conditions. Salt trucks? No. Winter tires? What's that?

As far as weather goes we have humid heat waves,, heavy thunderstorms, tropical storms and hurricanes. Different regions deal with different things. We deal with 100+ degree weather all the time in the summer, but you hear of people dying in 95 degree weather up north because they aren't used to that.

Problem? You kind of just get used to it. I'm sure people in Southern states get way more used to tolerating extreme heat and humidity. We just have a tolerance for this stuff.

I'm pointing out how extremely dramatic people are about this snow storm. This isn't a clear the shelves at Walmart type of event.

Yeah weather sucks, but get a grip. This is not that insane of an event.

I just looked up the weather in Dallas and they should be seeing some melting in the next few days and then the melting will speed way up next weekend. The snow won't last long down there.

But yes people can learn to do donuts and stuff, you deal with it all the time so I'm sure you and everyone that lives up there is experienced in it. Down here is a different story and to expect peope to just know how is silly. People do have basic knowledge of what to do if your fish tailing and stuff but actually experience things and doing it in the moment is different then learning about it. Not to mention people will panic once they feel they are losing control. I just dont think you understand the difference of being experienced in it and knowing how it feels and just experiencing it for the first time or trying to remember from years ago when it happened.

Calm yo smug self

Our roads are not built for snow, we don't curve them so the water drains off the sides, we don't get to salt them in preparation, and they aren't heated. And then once in a blue moon it hits and you can't trust the roads or the drivers.

The condescension from people because they think they can handle icy conditions so easily

This is a legitimately paralyzing storm here.

Heated roads? What fantasy world do you live in?

Also, the ground down there won't be properly frozen which means the snow will have a more difficult time sticking around. Texas temperatures will be back into the 40's within a week after this storm.

Again, this topic started with a tweet about people hoarding. Hoarding for something that will be over entirely in a week is a dramatic reaction. We just went over how stupid and extreme the hoarding was during the beginning of covid. There is no justifying this level of hoarding.

If you go out driving then just drive slow and brake early and often. If you do that then you'll be fine.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snowmelt_system they are normal in many parts of america that get snow

Texas will be back to normal within one to two weeks, but for the time being it's 13 degrees where I am and the windchill is 5 to 20 degrees below 0. and yes the ground is properly frozen.

Hoarding is dumb but the main part of why so many stores are empty is because the trucks cannot drive food to restock. I don't think most people know how little stock grocery stores have on hand at a given time, in order to minimize waste.

my HEB has been missing numerous shipments over the past few days and that is the main reason we have been empty on some items.

Also this, we may not be getting a truck tonight for my circle k, because of the conditions. So I'm sure big stores have also the same issue.

that's because your area is accommodated to snow/ice and has the means to minimize its impact on the people delivering items to your stores. Trucks are able to deliver items to your stores regularly without missing a beat.

Hurricanes though we will make sure to make a beer run before it hits. Ive personally spent the night in the woods (we even managed to keep a camp fire going somehow) and even worked partially outside during minor hurricanes.

Another reason Texas grocery stores are so empty is because of power outages.

When the power goes out, and items aren't refrigerated for an hour or more, the store throws them out. My store has to throw out shelves and shelves of items that are meant to be kept cold. It has already happened to my HEB a few days ago. I was there today and the lights flickered off for about fifteen seconds but luckily came back on.

Trees near power cables aren't trimmed in expectations of ice storms in Texas the way they are in northern states, so we get more power outages as a result. Also, the trees here aren't as coniferous, they are wider and droopier and cause more outages.

Power outages don't just mess things up for grocery stores, they also cause food to spoil elsewhere or to make it impossible to transport.

So yes ice messes up grocery stores badly in texas. If you live in a state that has adapted to it then you should appreciate the perks you get and be grateful you get all that buffer space to protect your roads and grocery system from too much disruption.

You know what my family does if deep snow causes a power outage? Bury things we want kept cold in the snow.

We also will melt snow to refill the toilet so was can flush. Just like we set out buckets during hurricanes to collect water for the same reason

Oh no this freezing parciptation has cut our power and is now inches deep on the ground how ever will i keep my milk cold?

Doesn't Texas have a bunch of farmers? Why the fuck do they need to horde food?

Another reason Texas grocery stores are so empty is because of power outages.

Do stores in texas not have generators to keep refrigeration units running in the event of a power outage?

True. I was talking about people worried the food in their fridge is gonna go bad. Which begs the question why do they aleays wipe out the milk and bread first in grocery stores. Two things that go bad quickly even in ideal conditions.
