I remember when there was the story of the black kid falling asleep on a bus and he knocked on someone's door, preparing to ask for directions to his school. What's really funny is the vids of people dumping cases of their bud light and replacing them with coors light since they have done pride month cans and bottles.

There are around 30 go-go bars spread over all three levels of Nana Plaza building. Go-go bars within Nana Plaza offer all that Thailands red light districts are famous for - go-go dancers, live shows, pole dancers and relaxing atmosphere. So self-defense is a joke in this country. You are only allowed to respond to an attacker with an equal amount of force.

This was back in like 2015, but some drunk man broke into a woman's apartment where she lived alone with her daughter. The mother took out a kitchen knife and stabbed the guy and pushed him out of the window (first-floor apartment).

She was found liable for his injuries and had to pay restitution to him. He was drunk, so he just got probation.

But it does factor into the bigger picture of self-defense for women here. It's pretty common for any kind of "domestic dispute" to have the police try and force both parties to make amends instead of arresting anyone, taking them to the station, and doing the paperwork. Domestic abuse numbers are pretty underrepresented as a result.

It's pretty much common knowledge here that if a drunk man rapes a woman here, he will get off with probation. The common excuse is "He wouldn't normally act that way. Alcohol is to blame, not the man himself"

This has been used for rapes, assaults, murders. There was an infamous case where an old man kidnapped and brutally raped an elementary girl. Since he was drunk, he was able to get his sentence reduced and released early.

I haven't been sexually harassed but I've had co-workers and students of mine tell me about how male teachers will touch them/massage them during the school day. Even if they report it, the teachers will get lectured. The worst thing that can happen to them is they get transferred to another school.

Then there are the constant public toilet hidden cameras. The sex-slavery ring ran by pop stars. The gamer-gate-esque online culture.

Immune to income tax, property tax, sales tax, etc...? Much much better than the money.

She's a talented writer and Girls is honestly a very enjoyable show when you realize a lot of the time, the women aren't being portrayed as good people.

But personally, I think she's a horrible person.

just because something was used centuries ago it doesnt mean it kept being used in the 1950s, 1970s, 1990s or 2010s

But it has been used and continues to be used because it can be used as a placeholder when the question giver does not know the person being talked about.

I teach middle school English in South Korea and I give them this example:

Me: Hey everyone! We have a new science teacher starting this year.
Students: Oh neat! What's his name?
Me: Well actually, it's a woman. And her name is....

Or flip it with "her name" and "it's a man" instead. It's far simpler to respond with "What's their name?" without any need for correction.

They/their/them as a singular noun has been used for stuff like this forever. It's why it has outlasted thy/thine that you keep bringing it up. And it's why it's important to talk about how the singular form of these words predates Shakespeare because it de-weaponizes these bad-faith arguments that anti-trans bigots try to spew.

Yeah. The cops don't want to actually go through the criminal process. Most people who are arrested are released without charge, even for serious crimes. It's the same reason Japan has a 99% conviction rate. They only press charges if they are sure they will be found guilty, because a not guilty charge can ruin your career as a prosecutor (the idea being that if he wasn't guilty and you tried to prove he was anyway, you should not be a prosecutor). You end up with this situation where foreigners will complain about Japanese conviction rates, while praising the low crime rate and prison population in Japan, failing to realize the connection. The truth is most people just don't get in any real trouble. Even for major crimes.

Yeah that's how it is here. Actually, it's pretty openly corrupt. It's a universal understanding that a person can get away with anything if they were drunk. The excuse is they wouldn't act like that in a sober state. That plus blood money.

I can't remember who it was, maybe New Jack himself, but they brought up how ECW had only one person die during their entire run (Louie Spicolli) when WWE had double-digit numbers.

The rest of the deaths were either from independent health issues or drug overdoses. Which I wouldn't fault Paul on since those overdoses were from people who had substance abuse issues already.

He wasn't under arrest. He was asked to come to the station voluntarily for questioning (had he refused they likely would have started the process to get a warrant for his arrest, but it wouldn't have been possible on the spot). That's usually how it works here. And also people attacking police with weapons isn't a huge concern here. Japan isn't America.

I was saying it's a prime example of Adams not liking black people prior to his rant.

You mentioned how he could skate by on it being difficult for newspapers to have black characters, even though Schultz did it years ago, so it's not really an excuse Adams can have.

I mentioned Asok because it shows that characters of color wouldn't and haven't been an issue in comic strips, even in Adams own work. So it's more of an indictment of his views.

I think the stylized nature of the character designs and newspaper comics largely being printed in black and white can help mask some of the lack of diversity. Like you see these weird blobby people and it's just seperate enough to think of them kind of seperate from race. And not having a black character actually hides the fact because you don't have any diversity to draw attention to the fact you don't have diversity.

Then you couple this with the fact that the exposure to Dilbert is extremely brief. It's like 3 panels every 24 hours. You aren't exactly interacting with the material long enough to analyze it. You might have largely forgotten yesterday's strip by the time you read today's

I mean it kind of makes sense except Charles Schultz introduced Franklin into Peanuts back in '68 when someone asked "Hey where are the minorities?" to him.

And the fact Dilbert did have Asok, a person of color, in the strip.

We had that. Everyone drove their Massey Ferguson or John Deeres and parked them all in a row in the school parking lot.

Saga is a great comic book. Too many people don't look beyond superheroes when they hear about comics though.

Paper Girls is also one of my favourite comics, We Stand On Guard was a fun read, and I've head great things about Y: The Last Man but I've never actually read that one.

Y: The Last Man is fantastic. For me, it's very similar to Saga in that I loved all of the characters. Even ones that were introduced that I was like "Ehhh" on eventually turned me around to rooting for them.

It's a gut punch of a series though. Not as soul-wrenching as Saga gets, but it gets there at times.

Ex Machina is a pretty good one too. It's surprisingly believable given the concept. It doesn't feel too out there.

Beyond just Black Widow and Black Panther, She Hulk remains the gold standard of this thus far. Wandavision had it. Hawkeye had it. Loki had it. Doctor Strange Multiverse of Madness surprisingly had it. Thor Love & Thunder definitely had it. Even Falcon had Sam berate people for calling the terrorists terrorists despite clearly being terrorists who just so happened to be led by a woman.

I just finished an episode of She-Hulk where an entire group of men tell the main character what to do, she does it, and it is spun as entirely positive experience.

The only times men are portrayed negatively are when they are pieces of shit. And women are portrayed negatively as well.

Ken Keeler, one of the writers on the show, has a PhD in mathematics. So the math in the show will always be accurate.

Edit: He also had to make up a proof to have the body switch episode make mathematical sense.
