Polls didn't always start and stop on the hour. In fact, it was common for the next match to start as much as 15 minutes early or more if the previous match was a stomping. It isn't like today where polls last 24 hours to the second.

Man. Reading stuff like this really puts modern-day complaints into perspective.

I think the big predictor of the start of "This rally has gone too far!" reactions is when a classic Nintendo thing gets knocked off. Starcraft is a hero until it beats a Zelda game. I looked at a lot of Undertale reactions across the web and most people didn't care what it was beating until it upended Super Mario World (what's a Fallout 3 again?). Draven...okay Draven sucked from the start, but him beating Link drove people even more insane.

If Undertale faced Pokemon RBY or Rallied Melee in Round 2, I think it could have lost. The bandwagon wasn't THAT big by then. It didn't get challenged until Round 4, and by then it was a tad too late.

I disagree on the idea of the 128 characters being shown to B8 before the bracket is made. It could legally be seen as a conflict of interest, legally, as everyone on B8 would immediately start posting ideas for how they want the bracket to be made, which would be seen as us helping make a bracket that we would eventually participate in for prize money.

A lot of voting for main character is just voting for the character that represents your favorite games. It's as simple as that. For a smaller-scale example, Lloyd Irving is almost no one's favorite character from Tales of Symphonia but he's the only one still getting in.

One time I was fighting a B8er with my Ike who was very close to sealing the deal against me. I panicked, threw out a random Ike forward smash (which is extremely slow and predictable), and he tripped into it, died, and lost the match. Most disgusting thing I ever did in a competitive game.

Side note: it's probably too late to appear, but RBY/Majora in 2008 should be on this list. It wildly changed the perception of an entire series within the span of 24 hours. RBY's run also had significant direct consequences on later contests - it doing so well is the main reason we started rallying for more Pokemon like Charizard and Squirtle to get in.

It kind of messes with me that parts of 2013 could go entirely differently if Squirtle doesn't beat Blastoise in the NRT by 1 vote.
