KamikazePotato 04/16/23 5:11:27 PM #186 | So. The story. Going into OW, I knew that there was a time loop and the sun kept exploding. That was it. The first 1/3 of my playthrough was in line with my limited expectations. There's space, planets, and an ancient precursor race that liked science maybe a bit too much. Also something about an Eye of the universe and quantum mechanics. I'll probably be relevant later. Then all the scattered pieces of information started coming together, and I learned more about the reasons why everything is happening the way it did. A neat space adventure game gradually morphed into The DLC also added a lot to the story. Not so much tl;dr - I think this one quote sums up the core themes of the game for me. Final side note: the quantum stuff in Outer Wilds is all cool as shit. I don't necessarily want other games to repeat it, as it would lose its luster that way, but the --- It's Reyn Time. |

KamikazePotato 04/16/23 4:41:02 PM #185 | Yeah no worries, I'll keep my expectation in check. It would be egregiously unfair of me to start measuring other games to Outer Wilds. I was legitimately in a gaming rut before this - it's been a while since I played a game I really, REALLY liked. Except for Elden Ring but I basically knew what I was going to get out of that. I haven't been this enamored and surprised by a game since...I can't remember, honestly. I might have to go back as far as 2015, which gave me Bloodborne and Undertale. --- It's Reyn Time. |

It's like, instead of gathering items to get more, you're gathering knowledge.I was explaining Outer Wilds to some friends yesterday and one of them went "that sounds like Majora's Mask" and I had to stop and wonder why I hadn't thought of that comparison myself. Didn't know that detail about Skyward Sword inadvertently inspiring Outer Wilds. Glad that game was good for something ! XIII_Rocks posted... I've been hoping for something like this to appear. I heard Subnautica scratches the same itch, but idk if that's true.Subnautica is the game I was most internally comparing Outer Wilds to when I started playing. With that said, Subnautica far more of a survival game. I'd say the sense of exploration is almost as good and I'd recommend it to people who liked OW, but you aren't going to have those logic brain blast moments for the most part, and the story isn't remotely comparable. To get super reductive, Subnautica was a 8.5/10 that did one concept (underwater exploration) extremely well while OW is maybe a 10 for me. --- It's Reyn Time. |
Topic | Why did no one tell me Outer Wilds was a horror game |
KamikazePotato 04/16/23 3:27:18 PM #176 | Gameplay thoughts first. Outer Wilds, from my perspective, is best described as a Metroidvania that fixes the problems I have with the genre as a whole. 1. My least-favorite part of basically every Metroidvania I've played is when you start doing a lot of backtracking. Partially because it gets very tedious very fast, and partially because I'm not nearly as enamored with 2D movement as some other people, and the vast majority of Metroidvanias are 2D. Outer Wilds fixes the backtracking issue because, despite the universe seeming huge, you can get almost anywhere very quickly, and the vastness of space is awe-inspiring no matter how many times you go through it. 3D movement in Outer Wilds is also really fun. The zero-gravity thruster stuff felt very intuitive, and I took to it almost immediately. Both times I landed on the Sun Station (the normal way and the Hotshot way) are some of the most satisfied I've felt with personal little gaming accomplishments in a long time. In comparison, I recently 100%d Metroid Dread, and the most interesting challenges in that game still felt like a bit of a chore at times. 2. Sense of progression. This is probably heretical to a lot of people, but for a genre built on expanding the player's abilities as they gain upgrades, the progression in Metroidvanias has always felt shallow to me. There's nothing inherently satisfying about looking at a too-high ledge and going "I'll come back when I have the double jump." It's just a prelude to backtracking. The best games will mix and match abilities and make you perform advanced maneuvers, but even then I think there's a psychological barrier that prevents me liking it as much as I maybe should. Outer Wilds' focus on knowledge as a reward, rather than intrinsic abilities, is approximately one thousand times more satisfying. There's a stark difference between being unable to complete a random objective because your character needs new boots, and understanding that you could probably beat the entire game right now if you just knew more. Outer Wilds gave me more Oh Shit/Eureka moments than the last decade of gaming combined. And it just builds on itself too, so each hour you play the game is just more and more fascinating, until you reach the ending parts which are just plain mindblowing. In a lot of ways, this feels like the kind of game I've been waiting for my entire life. It's not without flaw (I mentioned earlier in the topic about it leaving a bit too heavily on time-based solutions) but wow. I'm going to miss flying around in my ship, trying to avoid autopiloting into the sun, crash-landing on a target planet and going "I lived, good enough". Legitimate question: is there any game that replicates the Eureka moments of Outer Wilds while still having an actual world attached to it? I know people swear by Baba Is You for puzzle solving but that's not remotely the same experience. Story/narrative thoughts later after I've gotten some sleep. --- It's Reyn Time. |

It has a certain tedium to it that seriously kills the momentum of the game. It's means to be chewed on and experimented with for a longer period of time, to kinda extend the playtime. It totally doesn't fit into the absolutely flawless pacing of the main game.I'm really enjoying the DLC.
