Breath of the Wild did insanely well in Japan, though before then yes.

Metroid sold outright badly there until Dread.

BotW sold very well, but I dunno about insanely. Still quite a ways behind the likes of Mario Odyssey, Super Mario Party, and Ring Fit Adventure.

All of those are insane sellers!

Incidentally I am not entirely expecting Pragmata to release. Every generation there is a Capcom game that gets announced then disappears or is cancelled. Remember Deep Down?

I don't think this is surprising.

Tears may have had an exciting trailer, but it's still a sequel and is operating in the same basic framework as it's predecessor. People are excited but at it's CORE it's the same type of game being made in the same generation. It's going to have a lot of the same map, going to have the same controls, has the same engine and visuals. It's a known quantity.

XVI is something brand new, with lots of influence from one of the most popular ongoing games on the market today but in a completely different genre and engine.

YoshiP is also a Rockstar right now. The only named game creator spearheading a project that would get more pull is Kojima. I might have said Yoko Taro at one point, but him spreading his name across a bunch of budget titles and mobile games nobody cares about has definitely waned his value.

I dunno. For the people in the know, sure, but Miyazaki doesn't exactly have a well known public face or presence. I bet a lot of people who play Souls games don't even know his name, much less would recognize him from a picture.

Of course this is a Japanese poll, and I can't speak for their perspective on that. Could be totally different from how it is in the west.

This applies to every game developer besides Miyamoto and Kojima. And Yoko Taro I guess, but that's mostly because the Emil mask he wears got a lot of press.

I couldn't tell Miyazaki from a picture but I will play anything he makes in a heartbeat.

None of that is wrong, but I still wouldn't say the man HIMSELF is as well known compared to his games.

Let me put it this way. I think "A Hideo Kojima Game" does more to promote a game than "From the creator of Metal Gear Solid", but I would say "From the creator of Dark Souls and Elden Ring" would be a better promotion than "A Hidetaki Miyazaki Game".

This is all kind of moot though since I think my other points in original post is like 90% of the reason anyways, the YoshiP comment was just thrown in there.

I really like Lupin, Princess Mononoke and Porco Rosso, the rest of his stuff is pretty good. I haven't seen the last like....5 or 6 movies, though. Should really watch Princess Kaguya though, I hear it's a banger.

Princess Kaguya wasn't him. Would also say it's more good for animation than anything else, the story/characters are weaker than the average Ghibli movie.

Yeah I have to come down on the side of Hidetaka Miyazaki at this point. Absolutely the biggest H Miyazaki at the moment and probably the biggest creative in games right now aside from Miyamoto (who isnt really directly involved with development any more). Also, this is very much a poll of Famitsu readers not even necessarily a wider Japanese gaming audience. Mac is right, TotK will probably sell 2x of what FFXVI does in Japan alone.

The dumbest thing about this voting is that they split votes between PS4/5. Street Fighter 6 would be #3 and both Like a Dragon games would rank higher if you combine the PlayStation votes.

Elden Ring has sold over 20 million copies. Hayao Miyazaki is mostly beloved by boomer anime fans. The newer generation doesn't care nearly as much.

I will say online film communities I lurk in are hyping up his hew movie to the point of saying that hell get an oscar nomination for Best Director (never happened before animation) so you never know. If that happened maybe he would regain the to H Miyazaki title!

Of course I suspect more likely it gets nominated for Animated Feature and rightly loses to the new Spiderverse.

Hayao Miyazaki isn't loved by just anime boomers. He's just loved period by normies. Which is not something you can say about Hidetaka Miyazaki I don't think.

Elden Ring is absolutely a normie game, much more than even Spirited Away (which I consider my favourite film of all time!) is a normie film. Also Miyazakis star has fallen in the decade since hes made a film, especially since Ponyo and The Wind Rises were not on a level with the rest of his work.

Miyazaki getting his name up there with GRRM is an example of him turning normie though! Much like Miyazaki getting a deal with Disney.

There's arguments to be made in both sides.

I wouldn't use Time Magazine as a stepping stone, though, it's the American Idol of publications. Everyone knows about it, it's been around forever, and it's extremely popular, but it doesn't matter at all and it's never been less relevant.

Hayao is just way more bigger even in the past 12 months. Game creators in general don't have that much name recognition especially someone as humble as Hidetaka.

I didn't even know who Miyazaki was until I googled him... It looks like I haven't ever played a game made by him.

Seems like he redefined an entire genre of games which is a pretty significant deal? It's just not a genre that catches my interest.

then we began discussing who are recognizable by name video game developers, of which there really are none to normies

I remember like 2 decades ago people were saying that the 2 most recognizable names in the game industry were Shigeru Miyamoto and Will Wright, and I just sat there going, "Who's Will Wright?"

Now since after Spore, Will Wright's name really has faded away. Probably for the best since I found out that he got into the blockchain game and NFT scene.

A Ghibli Park opened near my house last November and tickets were completely sold out for months. You still need to buy them a few months in advance I think. It definitely wasn't full of boomers, either. Hayao is several orders of magnitude more famous than Hidetaka, at least out here.
