Depends on the city and town, but overall I'd take the big city.

As far as I'm concerned....

TopicWhat if your wife wanted your children to take her last name?
K181
09/08/17 2:19:38 PM

Simple, I wouldn't allow it. Just as she was entirely free to refuse for the kids to take my name only and have a hyphenated name for the kids, I'd expect her to hold to that as well and be okay with me not wanting our kids to only have her name. In this circumstance, we'd have kids with hyphenated surnames, simple as that.

Thankfully, she willingly took my last name and our four kids have my last name only, so problem avoided. I made it readily available that I'd be fine with her going hyphenated or keeping her last name and our kids being hyphenated from the very beginning, though.

Yes. He played at such an incredibly and incompetently low level that first take it looks like it was the first time he had ever played a videogame or was intentionally being bad. Couple that with him even writing that it took him quite some time to realize that it wasn't like Mario and he couldn't just hop on enemies to kill them (something that should be obvious after a maximum of two attempts), and it's clear that this was just incompetence and of such poor quality that it should have never been posted. It's that bad.

This isn't whining about a reviewer having a bad kill/death ratio, it's about expecting competence. Hell, if you watched a car review and the entire video was about the guy not understanding how a key fob works and not knowing how to brake, you'd call that person out as not being qualified to give an opinion about how a car drives. Same thing here.

As in, what moments most stick out in your memory as truly great events, where you think that the industry took a big step forward that permanently got etched in your memory.

For me, there are three big ones that stand out for me.

1) In Chrono Trigger, when I first entered a gate. Just the tunnel and the lines going back and forth shocked my young mind, and I still remember thinking, "graphics can't possibly get better than this" for some reason.

2) Playing GTA3 and hitting a hooker with a bat repeatedly. That was really my introduction to sandbox gaming and the realization, "oh, you can do anything? Awesome!"

3) Playing Fallout 3 and nuking Megaton. Was initially playing the game and thinking that it was lackluster, and then that just was like event #2 on steroids for me and transformed the experience permanently.

Like all things, it depends on what you do with it. I have zero doubt in my mind that the quality of education offered by an Ivy League is about on par with any number of other excellent public and private universities across the United States. But what Ivy League schools have in spades compared to just about any other university other than maybe a handful of schools like Stanford, MIT, and Chicago is in the realm of connections. Having a Harvard or a Yale degree opens so many doors right off the bat and, if you use the university's resources, gets your foot in the door in essentially every field. That is invaluable, especially in an economy where there's a glut of college educated graduates looking for work.

Morbid humor and detachment is completely natural for doctors and nurses, and quite frankly looking at a dead dude's dick doesn't seem to be an issue for me provided that they didn't do anything to the body. Cracking jokes or making comments or even admiring patients and cadavers is all very common. Just a week or two ago I overheard a conversation between doctors by their lockers talking about how they needed to work out after seeing the six pack on some dude that died in a car accident.

Sorry if that's a shock to you, but you just get desensitized to those things when you deal with it daily. Now, if we were talking about a situation where the nurses were taking pictures or hitting the corpse or engaging in necrophilia, that's an entirely different matter. Just looking or joking, though? Bad news, I guarantee that your doctors or nurses have had snide or joking comments about you or a loved one behind your back. Big whoop.

If you don't get desensitized then the job becomes too hard and you get ptsd as a doctor.

But I can't do that and it makes me ill so that's why I switched majors much to my father's dismay. Btw he works in a hospital and makes several monies

Exactly. And that's the thing, not everybody can handle that kind of stress, and those that do often need coping mechanisms. I've seen staff cope with drugs and alcohol and I've seen staff cope with cracking jokes and generally getting desensitized. The latter is far healthier and safer.

No. And speaking as a former football player and a former boxer (aka - long term, I probably do have some CTE concerns)....

Up until recently, we were all in the dark about the dangers of concussions. While the owners and the league deserve to be pilloried over reports that they withheld information about the dangers of the sport from the players and the public, that issue is not on the fans for following a sport that they love.

Nowadays, the information is out there. Everybody knows about the dangers of concussions and other injuries, and players that keep playing do so with the knowledge of that in mind. No issue there following it as a result either.

I liken the NFL to the tobacco industry. Look, if you have a person that smoked so much as a single cigarette prior to the release of information about the carcinogenic nature of smoking was made public (after decades of withholding the information by the industry), they deserve a massive payout. But if you started in the late 60s or later, you did so with the full knowledge that smoking is unhealthy, and that's on you.

TopicPast 8 Elections - Pick who you'd like to be president from the major parties
K181
09/05/17 6:16:40 PM
#1
Since 1988, there have been thirteen candidates that had a realistic chance to win the presidency at their respective election days: George H.W. Bush, Michael Dukakis, Bill Clinton, Ross Perot, Bob Dole, George W. Bush, Al Gore, John Kerry, Barack Obama, John McCain, Mitt Romney, Donald Trump, and Hillary Clinton. These twelve major party nominees plus Perot all had realistic chances to win the presidency, though some were much more unlikely than others. Rank them by order for how much you'd prefer them to be president if an election was held today.

For the purposes of all candidates, consider them at what you consider to be their best as an actual major presidential candidate. In other words, if you prefer 2008 Obama over 2012 Obama, assume it's the 2008 Obama that's running. Same for 1988 Bush vs 1992 Bush, 1992 Clinton vs 1996 Clinton, 1992 Perot vs 1996 Perot, etc. And, for circumstances of candidates that ran previously, didn't win the nomination, and then ran again to win the nomination, you can only consider the version of them that won the nomination. In other words, 2000 McCain doesn't count, this is 2008 McCain that we're talking about. Same for 2008 Hillary not counting, this is the 2016 Hillary we're considering.

As for me, this is how I'd tier the candidates in the hypothetical 2017 election at their respected nominated party candidate bests, with the best at the top:

Barack Obama
Bill Clinton
George H.W. Bush
Al Gore
Bob Dole
John McCain
John Kerry
Michael Dukakis
Mitt Romney
Hillary Clinton
George W. Bush
Ross Perot
Donald Trump
