Your first one will always nostalgically be your favorite. The newest one is actually the best one because the improvements have been incremental over time. As your average, casual GFaqs voter, it's Ultimate > Melee no question. Same way it's MK8 > any other MK game. (I remember feeling damn confident in Brawl > Melee back during whatever contest that was for exactly this reason.) The people clinging onto Melee are the same ones who cling on to MK64 or, god forbid, the original SMK. It's not that the older games in the series are without merit. Whether you're talking Smash or Mario Kart there are definitely some unique, fun things about each installment. But the average person doesn't really give a shit about that. As for Smash, I seriously swear I played Brawl so much for a year after it came out, and then barely played it again afterwards. I played a lot of Melee in late 2010 just for the heck of it (it was because I had to rely on a friend to unlock all characters and stages and finish every event match, so I wanted to be able to do all that myself), but since then I have had a hard time getting into Smash period.
