Only thing I like about Double Dash is that having character unique items was kinda cool.

Otherwise much prefer Wii.

I didn't really like character specific items because I had to pick Paratroopa and Toad every time since I wanted access to triple red shells and triple mushrooms.

Double Dash created a paradigm shift in Mario Kart. All of the flaws you could point to Wii for having were spawned of Double Dash's seed. Heightened emphasis on items, exaggeration of the mini-turbo system, that really gross plastic-y art style, stronger comeback items, characters being invalidated by stat changes beyond their weight class - all began with DD.

... but DD also has super good tracks and Wii has that crappy Thunder Cloud item and I hate that so DD.

Wii will always be the best game in the series. DD was good as well but the character specific specials were crap. DK, Diddy, Petey and Boo were by far the best characters as you always got the giant banana for being at the front giving you an even bigger advantage.

I preferred battle mode in Double Dash, otherwise I easily prefer Mario Kart Wii, it had a bunch of really cool tracks, and the online multiplayer was really good by Nintendo standards.

I remember emulating DD my Freshman year of college to play with a few friends. We came from totally different places, had totally different video game experience and even had a range of sobriety. After playing a circuit, we looked at each other and I silently turned off my computer. The emulator ran smoothly. The game was unplayable.

DD is easily the worst of the 3D Mario Karts. Most of its new ideas weren't very good, and the good ones were vastly improved in the later games. Even 64 at least has simplicity going for it. DD just feels awkward compared to the rest of the series.

having only played SMK, 64, DD and Wii, Wii was the only one i didn't like. the controls/movement felt awful compared to the others.

I'm with FFDragon on this one.
Double Dash feels perfect. Well... not perfect. 'Right' is the better word.
Compared to the rest. It's the best in the series. Even today.

I should add, this is no disrespect to any Mario Kart at all. I love the series.
Put any Mario Kart on, and give me a controller, and I'm in.

Hell... most KART games are great.
Maybe some people out there even remember Wacky Wheels, Skunny Kart, BC Racers and Street Racer (8 player split screen)

My ranking of MKs I've played is something like 8 > DD > DS > Wii > 64 >>> Super Circuit

I looooove Double-Dash!! and I despise MKWii and the bikes.

Didn't bother with SC or 7.

DS is the peak of the series for obvious reasons.
8 had a solid online and a huge amount of tracks.
Super has a nice arcade racing feel, and is different from most of the others.
DD and 64 were both good in their time, but keep getting more outdated as time goes by.
Wii was a bit of a shit show, and luckily they fixed everything wrong with it in future installments.

Character specific items in DD was a bad thing because there were like four characters that were just automatically better than the rest because of it while others just got items that were typically normal items like triple mushrooms/greens/reds.

I would say the only MK that tops DD is 8. Wii had too many racers throwing too many shit items. The controls felt off and the tracks were boring other than a couple tracks. I played it recently and geniunely think i would have enjoyed super circuit more

Meanwhile my freshman year of college saw a semester long war between my roommate and I where we played it on the gamecube nearly every day.
