The SNES?

How about The Violinist of Hamelin? I never finished it but I thought it was cute.

Or if you wanna do something halloween appropriate, there's always Super Castlevania IV... maybe Dungeon Master, but the SNES version's controls are a pain (it actually has an OST on the SNES, though, which is nice).

Putting aside any irl people because holy fuck there are so many terrible people out there... still can't narrow it down so I'll just list some that spring to mind.

The main character's parents in End Roll, Solon from Tales of Legendia, DA2's Alrik, Charmles from DQVIII, Brian Irons from RE2, Ragou from Tales of Vesperia, Mr. Hoffman from Rule of Rose, Arcturus Mengsk from SC2, etc... any Nazi/Nazi inspired character (Kvar from Tales of Symphonia is a very straightforward example) pretty much, most power-abusing religious figures (fuck it I'll name an irl example... scam artists like Peter Popoff are absolute scum of the earth who should all be in prison).

Any abusive pos, especially to children, usually does it for me. A surefire way to get me to particularly hate a character is to make them utterly vile and then have a scene where they pull some sort of sob story out of their ass at the last second. Bonus points if whoever they're whining to actually buys into it, or if the heroes suddenly are like "oh man maybe we shouldn't kill this fucker" or they have this weird crisis after killing them about oh no what if we did the wrong thing because the guy told a sad story? Ugh. Xenoblade 3 did this with some of its villains and it was insufferable.

... But if I'm being unfair? I really hate obnoxious voices. If a character or person has a voice I dislike it sometimes tips over into being almost physically painful and I have to get away from them, and it's a surefire way to ruin something for me.

My older sisters had an interesting thing that I can't find from googling. Was a set of square laminated tiles as well as plastic rails with grooves that the tiles slotted into, and clips to hold the rails together. The tiles were patterned with various floors/walls/etc, and you could build your own custom doll houses with it. The end result usually looked kind of like a modified cubby shelf. I wonder what happened to that stuff. It was a pretty clever design, easy to put together and it barely took up any space when taken apart.

The simplest issue to point out is that it's two surnames from two different places unless you want to be really generous to Rowling and assume that she localized Zhou poorly.
End result is that the name comes off as Rowling using words that sound "vaguely Asian," and that also has some, um, problematic precedent.

People also take issue with Kingsley Shacklebolt, though I think that one is far more obvious in its issues to English speakers.

She's really big on the "we have to protect autistic people from being tricked into becoming trans, the poor, stupid, gullible things" and "we have to protect cis women from rapists by not letting trans people use women's bathrooms" shtick, often citing studies that she either completely misrepresents, or "studies" that couldn't survive peer review in order to support her assertions.

I assume that the backlash over her most recent book is what caught your attention. It's a brick that revolves around an artist getting canceled by le woke mob and then murdered, and includes weird jabs not just at trans people, but at people with disabilities as well, but I think the thing that people are getting a real kick out of is that it has pages and pages and pages and pages and pages of fake social media posts, the poor formatting of which apparently makes the kindle version virtually unreadable (wonder if they've fixed that yet?). Personally I couldn't be bothered to even read them, but there are other parts of the book that are worth laughing at, some of them read like they're trying to parody Rowling instead of being her own writing:

DMed, as Robin knew, meant that Anomie had sent Kea a direct message.

he felt an unfamiliar glow of vicarious pride and for a few minutes wondered whether this sort of feeling accounted for peoples desire to procreate,

one of the bright overhead lights illuminated her breasts so that they looked like twin moons

I told her I didnt want to read any more lines about The Worm being confused about being a boy or a girl, because wed had complaints from non-binary kids. That caused another row. A worm is a hermaphrodite, though. Tim shook his head sadly.

Strike had no idea what the need for spoons referred to and assumed it was a piece of whimsy, possibly from some book or film he didnt know.

Fifteen, profoundly autistic, and convinced she'd found real friends online... of course she fell for it.

...

One really has to question why it is Rowling bothers to try writing books for adults if this is the level of quality she's hitting, lol.

... Seems like you could remodel it with some creativity. For example, provided they are not loadbearing, you could knock out the walls between the living room and middle bedroom and the middle bedroom and the bonus room to make a bigass open space.

There's potential there but it would definitely require re-working; imo the biggest problem with it is that the bathrooms are not as easily accessible as they should be. That is absolutely not a problem you want to have in a floor plan.

Considering his second playtester for the game was his daughter he probably didn't think that at all, and you're probably kind of being a bit of an asshole just making shit up.

gaming in general is a male thing... Everybody whos tried to design a game to interest a large female audience has failed. And I think that has to do with the different thinking processes of men and women.

As I have often said, I am a biological determinist, and there is no question that male and female brains are different. It is apparent to me that by and large females do not derive the same inner satisfaction from playing games as a hobby that males do. It isn't that females can't play games well, it is just that it isn't a compelling activity to them as is the case for males.

That second quote is from 2004. 2004! My mother plays DnD, has done so since the first edition, and painted miniatures and props. Gygax, like many casual bigots, projects his own personal experiences with a handful of women onto every single woman in existence, apparently forgetting that women are individual human beings impacted by their environment. "Biological determinist." What a clown.

You know why women didn't play DnD much? Because they don't enjoy RPing murdering prostitutes and raping merchants that don't give the party a discount, or putting up with their DMs/fellow players insisting on hooking their character up with someone, etc, etc. Just one or two shitty sessions like that can kill a hobby for a person, especially one that requires multiple people to participate in. It's the same reason women gamers avoid using mics and shit during online multiplayer games. It has nothing to do with whether or not the games at their core appeal.

Edit: As an aside, the more I look into it the worse it gets, lol. Women DnD players have reviled Gygax since the 70s for this very reason, to the point where this:

(er, content warning I think?)

The issue with a lot of the big ones is that they often have a deity that's all-powerful... and that's just boring on its face and causes all sorts of narrative issues, such as "Why doesn't he just snap his fingers and fix all this?" and "but it's his fault, he controls everything, why is he punishing others for what he's done?" and stuff like that.

Unfortunately a lot of mythologies that I'm most interested in are the ones I haven't found very little information about (particularly indigenous American religions due to cultural erasure), so I'll just go with Egyptian mythology. Was into that a lot when I was a kid. I really liked Bastet.

For an earlier movie Ford was in, you should try out The Conversation (1974 film). It's a great film, and Ford's role in it is so different from the roles he's played in more famous films, it's refreshing despite being older than his work in Star Wars.

Topic2nd Amendment
Gaawa_chan
08/27/22 7:27:01 AM
#57
I think it's poorly phrased, and even some people at the time thought so, so I don't think that's unreasonable of me. I much prefer:

Constitution of Virginia
Article I. Bill of Rights
Section 13. Militia; standing armies; military subordinate to civil power
That a well regulated militia, composed of the body of the people, trained to arms, is the proper, natural, and safe defense of a free state, therefore, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed; that standing armies, in time of peace, should be avoided as dangerous to liberty; and that in all cases the military should be under strict subordination to, and governed by, the civil power.

Quite a few state constitutions have just flat-out "better" versions of the 2nd amendment, imo.

And I would add in a caveat almost word for word from the 13th amendment:
"except as a punishment for (violent) crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted"
No guarantee of armament rights for abusers, rapists, etc (basically the people most likely to go on murder sprees). Certainly a less egregious form of rights restrictions of felons than the forced labor the 13th amendment permits, and this one actually serves the purpose of harm reduction.
