Also Russian diplomat Dmitry Peskov reiterated today that specifically what Russian military doctrine says about the use of nuclear weapons is they are only to be used as a last ditch effort in a defensive war, and that Russia really can't make the argument that they are in any way, shape or form in a defensive war. Essentially, Peskov says Putin and Medvedev are full of shit and to ignore them.

It's extremely unlikely that Putin will opt to use a nuclear weapon in Ukraine, it's far too risky, serves exactly no benefit for him, and would lead to his death and whatever would remain of Russia after the war would be split between the US, Europe, and China. Russia as a country would be a thing of the past. And the US is having private discussions with Russia, and is explaining all of this to them in far more detail.
