This is an actual house. To get to the bedrooms you have to go through the bathroom. One of the bedrooms has no windows (and no way to escape in a fire). The garage has no door into the house. Be careful when parking or you'll take out the closet in the master bedroom. There is no bathroom in the master bedroom.

I would definitely have to remodel if I lived there But I probably could live there fine the way it is It would just be a mess to do or go anywhere

I think one of my neighbors has a garage that's physically attached to the house but doesn't have a door. That part isn't that unusual. The rest makes no sense tough, you have to snake your way through the entire home

It's fucking weird but I kinda like it and I can't explain why.

Also somebody said a person taking a shit can wall up the house like Berlin and that was hilarious.

I don't understand why the master bedroom doesn't have its own bathroom, while one of the regular bedrooms does. For that matter, I don't understand why there are only two bathrooms in a house that can house at least four people. Personally, I wouldn't need so many rooms, but it's still horribly-designed for the reasons mentioned.

It is on Zillow but the link is too long and I can't be bothered to shorten it.

My first thought was that there was an addition added, but most of the houses on the street are around the same square footage. I can't imagine that someone actually built the house with that floorplan initially.

I spent a lot of time trying to design a house layout before going with a spec home from a builder and modifying it.
You want to try to minimize square footage devoted to hallways b/c it's kind of wasted space, but still have a logical layout.
This layout screams to me "minimize hallway space!" taken to the extreme.
No thanks, the whole house is like a weird maze.

You know, a lot of the issues would be fixed if it just had an opening in the wall of the living room to the existing hallway, so you don't have to walk around the entire fucking house counter-clockwise from the front door to get anywhere.
The "bedroom" w/ no windows/escape is straight up illegal to call a bedroom, lol

I was thinking you could probably punch some doors through the living room to the center bedroom and master bedroom fairly easily, but then the whole thing would still be completely fucked lol

I'm pretty flexible with house layouts, as long as it's built well and stays at a comfortable temperature. More important to me is where the house is.

I mean it's a step up from my apartment.

I think most of the problems of that house could be solved if they just built a second story and put the bedrooms up there. Having a one story house with more than 3 bedrooms is just clunky. Then again, looking at the Zillow listing, it is California and it was built in the 50's. Pretty sure they are allergic to two story houses there.

My guess is they can't actually count that room without a window as a bedroom. A lot of building codes require anything defined as a bedroom to have either an exterior door or window.

Yeah, it's a basic common sense safety requirement.
Not sure if all 50 states have such laws, but I'd expect them to. To be a bedroom, it has to have a point of egress to escape directly to the outside, in case of a fire or something.
Hence why I said that it legally can't be called a bedroom.

I would add a door from the living room to the hall, bathroom behind the master bedroom closet that would connect the garage and master bedroom, back door to the garage, add a door from the laundry to the outdoor bar or bonus room

That would have been a small house for the 50's and the other houses in that area are between 1000sq ft and 1500 sq ft.

It's in California, so never, no way in hell.

The windowless bedroom exists because there was no basement for the dungeon.

Like everything else, depends on the price and location.

The center bedroom is not a legal bedroom. Use it as a hallway, punch doors into the living room, "bonus room" and you have a functional but still awkward and oversized 3 bedroom house.

I probably wouldn't buy it because someone else will pay close to what it would be worth with a decent layout, but if I got a great deal on it I could make it work.

The fact that there's no door between the garage and the house is completely ridiculous? Not to mention, if there were, it would be into the Master Bedroom. The regular bedrooms are too small and the kitchen being separated from the Living Room is a deal breaker for me. When I built my house, I broke mine down to an open floor plan. The Living room, Kitchen, and Dining Room are all one large area.

... Seems like you could remodel it with some creativity. For example, provided they are not loadbearing, you could knock out the walls between the living room and middle bedroom and the middle bedroom and the bonus room to make a bigass open space.

There's potential there but it would definitely require re-working; imo the biggest problem with it is that the bathrooms are not as easily accessible as they should be. That is absolutely not a problem you want to have in a floor plan.

the layout is awful. In fact in my state the room in the middle couldn't be considered a bedroom. A bedroom has to have a certain amount of natural light (aka a window), but I suppose you could call that the bonus room and the room listed as a bonus room would be the other bedroom. Either way that house has a terrible layout.

Bedrooms need to have windows for fire escape safety... unless your state additionally has a natural light requirement, but that sounds pretty weird

And it is listed as a 3 bed, I think that just outside of the "official" count there's nothing legally stopping you from saying stuff like "fourth room could be used as a non-conforming bedroom"
