The Amazing Spider-Man: Lethal Foes (Super Famicom)

I found out about the existence of this Spider-Man game last year and finally took the time to play it.

The graphics are pretty good looking and I liked the animations.

You can walk, run, jump, punch, crouching kick, uppercut, dive kick, running shoulder charge, shoot webs, web swing, wall/ceiling crawl and you can practically stick to any piece of background to crawl around as long as their is a wall of sorts to wall crawl in 8 directions.

Cameos Human Torch, Speedball, and Iron Fist

There's also a very impressive rogue gallery of villains you face for the bosses Spider Slayers make up the majority of normal enemies and you face off against Beetle, Lizard, Mysterio, Alistair Smythe, Green Goblin, Scorpion, Venom, Doctor Octopus and Carnage.

Spider-Man's jumps feels a little stiff and springy but you get used to it. While it was cool to see and fight all the bosses, some of the boss fights felt like they were too easy or unbalanced in difficulty until you know their patterns. The game can also be a little punishing cause if you lose a life, you have to start from the very beginning of the level. No checkpoints. Luckily most of the levels are short and you can usually find hearts/1-ups. Enemies also tend to drop them as well.

The final boss sequence is pretty cool You face off against Carnage with Venom helping you take him down

I recommend checking it out if you're a fan of Spider-Man.

Final Fantasy Adventure

I finally got to play the first Mana/Seiken Densetsu game.

It was very fun and solid though a little on the easy side. My only minor gripe about it is that there were too much usage of Keys. I made sure to always have a good supply of Keys (at least 8) before I went to the next dungeon.

When you level up, you can choose an additional bonus to level up a Stat. Your choice of Strength, Stamina, Wisdom and Will. That's neat.

Combat is simple and the power bar reminded me of Secret of Mana except you didn't have to wait for the meter to fill up to do maximum damage. It was mainly for doing your most powerful attack. The power meter would later play an important role for your Whip cause there are certain Poles you have to reach that are far away and you can't reach them if you don't let the meter fill up automatically in order to reach the Pole.

You can also use Mattocks to break walls and smash pots. Eventually you get a Morning Star which makes Mattocks obsolete to break walls/smash pots. Aside from the Sword, you also get to use an Axe to chop down trees and a Spear. You also had to switch your Weapons around on certain enemies cause some they are immune to certain ones. Similar to switching Swords around in Crystalis (NES).

You also meet a lot of different NPCs that join you throughout the game and they have special functions to help you big time when you use the Ask command like restore your HP, MP, cure you of Status effects, offer you hints, etc. Makes a lot of situations even more easier to handle.

Overall, I'm glad I finally got around to playing this one.

Kirby's Dream Land 3 (SNES)

The graphics in the game have a pretty nice look. Like a crayon drawing coming to life. Art style kinda reminded me of Yoshi's Island a little.

Kirby has access to Burning, Cleaning (new power) Cutter, Ice, Needle, Parasol, Spark, Stone.
The Animal Friends from Kirby's Dreamland 2 (Rick, Coo, and Kine) return along with 3 new Animal Friends: Chuchu, Pitch, Mago. Many different combinations with the powers, up to 48.

The real fun part of the game is getting all the Heart Stars. You have to do certain actions/tasks in order to get them all to face the true final boss.

I like the cameos that showed up from other Nintendo games
Chao & Goku from Yyki. I dunno too much about them.
Donbe & Hikari from Shin Onigashima. I recognize them from their Super Smash Bros. Melee Trophy
R.O.B. & Professor Hector from Gyromite
Metroids and Samus from Metroid. I loved that you had to use the Ice power to freeze the Metroids and Samus awards you with a Heart Star at the end of the level.

The final boss fight was also really something for a Kirby game at the time Dark Matter and Zero. The final part where after you beat Zero's final form (second phase) where it's eyeball detaches from it's body with blood coming out was quite the scene.

For something that came out in 1997, this was a pretty good Kirby game that was solid and impressive for one of the SNES's last outings.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie (Game Boy)

This game played very similar to the previous Power Rangers game on Game Boy. It was ok.

Every single one of the Rangers plays very similar except for some differences which are very miniscule: The Black, Pink and Yellow Rangers have higher jumps, move faster but weaker power while the White, Blue and Red Rangers are slower, can't jump as high but they have higher attack power. Too bad they can't use their trademark weapons.

This one didn't even have a Megazord sequence. It could of used one IMO to make this a little more enjoyable.

Bionic Commando (Game Boy)

Played this on my 2DS XL.

I was really impressed with this version. The story and gameplay are very similar to the NES version. I like Spencer's look in this game. He looked pretty cool.

Some of the early levels felt a little similar to the NES version but the later levels were brand new and unique. Game control is very solid and there are some very clever spots where you have to vertically Bionic Arm upward to transition into a diagonal swing in a few levels.

If you played the NES version, there's a good chance you'll like this one!

Beavis and Butt-head (Game Boy)

You play as Beavis and Butt-Head in an action/adventure with an overhead view. Beavis gets one exclusive level where it's a 2D sidescroller platformer in a sewer. The controls for the side scrolling section has a small bit of delay when you start to get Beavis moving. The controls for the overhead section are fine. It also has some nice character art displayed in the cut scenes.

You get into all kinds of shenanigans that Beavis and Butt-head get into like in the show. My favorite part is when you play as Beavis you can get a cup of coffee and Beavis becomes Cornholio. This makes him move really fast and he becomes invincible for a brief time.

It's worth checking out if you're a fan of Beavis and Butt-Head.

Kaeru no Tame ni Kane wa Naru (For the Frog the Bell Tolls) (Game Boy)

This game was REALLY fun! I saw all the stuff that was referenced in The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening that came from this very game. I immediately recognized Richard and even some of the music you hear from Link's Awakening also came from this game.

It's your standard "Save the princess" story but everything about this game was just pure fun and it doesn't take itself too seriously with a good amount of humor in it.

The combat is pretty unique in that it happens automatically when you encounter an enemy and you fight in a dust cloud like you see in cartoons. The battle plays out itself and you can also use an item or run away while the combat takes place if you want. You do much better in battle as you get better equipment when you get Swords, Shields and Stones that increase your Speed, Life and Power.

The real fun part of this game are the abilities to transform into Frog and a Snake. Each have their own unique abilities they use not only in combat, but also in 2D side scrolling portions of the game like you do in Link's Awakening as well. The Frog can swim, jump high and can one shot bugs while the Snake can crawl in tight spaces and scare away frogs. You can even go by undetected from certain enemies depending on what form you take.

Even though the game was a little on the short side and took me 2 days to complete, I had a lot of fun and I highly recommend checking it out!

Bart Simpson's Escape From Camp Deadly (Game Boy)

This game was surprisingly decent. I was expecting it to be pretty bad. There's a few rough parts but it's not all too bad if you play patiently.

Most of the "boss battles", if they could be called that were a joke.

The music was directly ripped from Bart Vs. The Space Mutants and one of the tracks sounds suspiciously like a Home Alone 2 track considering this was developed by the same company.

I find it amusing whenever Bart gets hit he says "Eat My Shorts!" and if you hit Lisa with a spitwad/boomerang she'll say "Stop it Bart!". Impressive they put voice clips in for the Game Boy at the time.

I never heard of this game until now.
This game is similar to Contra. Fun and short little Run & Gun. You can shoot in 8 directions, has a few weapons (Bazooka the best) and you can ride in a variety of vehicles in some of the levels. Another thing that's an abnormality you don't see very often is you don't get any contact damage if you run into an enemy.

Baby T-Rex (Game Boy)

This game was a fun little action/platformer. You play as a t-rex rescuing his girlfriend from an evil scientist.
I like some of the parts where you're running down really fast and you jump over slopes while you occasionally ride a skateboard (sounds like Radical Rex) similar to the likes of Adventure Island. In the later levels it can be kinda dumb cause you'll run so fast you won't have time to react to jump over a pit or running into a wall of spikes. Your means of attack is picking up objects to toss at enemies. Boss fights were pretty simple and they give you unlimited projectiles for boss fights.

I found out this game is a re-skin of 3 other games that plays exactly the same except they changed the sprites and story around

Playable port except it was heavily altered. The sprites are smaller due to one of the main features that was taken out from the Neo Geo version: The camera zooming in and out depending if the fighters were close or far away from each other. Blood was removed and even the win quotes were changed.

This was a great remake! I liked how some of the secrets were moved around and the condition of earning the Hadouken was changed. The Hadouken also seems to be pulled off much better with each input compared to the original. Great voice acting and nice cut scenes, though hearing X shout out the name of the Special Weapon ("FIRE WAVE! "STORM TORNADO!") can get a little irritating but not too bad.

The play control is also super good and matches that of the original. I'll be replaying this again for sure with the unlock you get after beating the game: Playing as Vile!

Buddy controls really well for the most part. Nice variety of game play here: 2D platformer with an overhead section thrown in (the only bad part really except if you take it slow), snowboarding on a piece of iceberg, crossing the street to collect Christmas lights, a pipe mini game where you have to match the pipes for the right presents to go through the correct pipe, an elevator mini game where you press the right numbers in a Memory/Simon like game, getting into snowball fights with elves, dropping off presents at the correct house with the correct color with the finale riding in Santa's sleigh to collect all the bells.

It plays like Pac-Man fused with Metal Gear.

Grinch can take out a bugle (it looks like) to knock out Whos with knock out gas while he collects the presents. He can also crawl on the ground to crouch over snowballs and he can make snowballs as well to stun the Whos. There are also some levels where you ride in a go-cart to collect presents as well.

There are also levels where you play as Max, his dog. He can jump over enemy dogs and he has a bark that can stun every dog on screen that's really helpful.

It just goes to show you when Konami acquires a license no matter how strange it is, they make it work somehow. The game was really good!

Aside from losing your charge when you get hit, Mega Man 5's Buster was really good with the wide blast radius compared to the slim shot from Mega Man 4. You get to keep your charge in 4 even if you get hit.

Fatal Fury (SNES)

This port is somewhat playable, but a little rough around the edges.

The first thing you'll notice off the bat for those familiar with the original on the Neo Geo is they took out the ability to switch between planes where you can jump in and out from the background to the foreground which separated it from other 2D fighters at the time.

The controls in this game aren't very responsive when performing certain special moves. The special moves themselves even got reduced in power. Terry's Burn Knuckle can KO an opponent if he hits 4 of them in the original while in this port it takes up to about 9. Rising Tackle is done by tapping down, up, punch instead of charging.

The AI is even different and certain tactics you used from the original won't work as much here. Jump kicks are weird in this game from certain characters. On the initial hit and on the way down, the active frames of it are pretty crazy.

They changed the bonus stage. Instead of arm wrestling, you're at the beach punching/kicking tires that come your way.

They removed the 2 player co-op mode but you can still do 1 on 1. A neat thing Player 2 can do is have access to every other fighter in the game aside from Terry, Andy and Joe.
That's probably the only thing worth checking out from this particular version.

DuckTales (Game Boy)

This version is similar to the NES version. The level designs are slightly different while some feel totally brand new which feels like you're playing a new version of the game. The cane pogo controls are also like DuckTales 2 on NES. You just jump and press B instead of holding down on the D-Pad while holding B. Unfortunately the hit detection in this game can be terrible at times and you end up not registering your hit and take damage instead. The music also suffered a bit and did not translate well to the Game Boy either. The Bosses are about the same as they were in the NES version. I would stick with the NES version personally.

DuckTales 2 (Game Boy)

This version is also similar to the NES version. Different level designs, same cane pogo controls (jump and hold B). There are some new item pick ups in this version not featured in the NES version: X-Ray Goggles that are found in every level that once you find them, they reveal hidden diamonds for you and a walkie talkie item can be found as well to call Launchpad in case you want to go back to the level select screen. There's also a treasure chest counter you find in one of the treasure chests that tells you exactly how many treasure chests there are in a level. I felt the music from the NES version translated well to the Game Boy version. Bosses are ridiculously easy just like the NES version. This version of the game was solid overall.

World Heroes 2 (SNES)

More of the same game with new characters and new death matches. Johnny Maximum the EVIL Football Player inspired by Joe Montana, Captain Kidd and Mudman were good new characters added to the roster that stood out well IMO.

DuckTales 2 (NES)

The sequel is ok. I like NES DuckTales and DuckTales Remastered a little more. The Pogo is done differently. You jump and Press B instead of jumping while you hold Down on the D-Pad and press B like you do in the first game. Scrooge also has a new mechanic where he can pull objects with his cane, which is kinda neat. This installment feels more like it's focused more on level exploration to get to the end of the level compared to the first one it feels like. Finding all the treasure map pieces to find an extra level was a nice touch and encouraged more on exploration and getting the true ending. All of the bosses are also super easy. Fun game overall.

Miracle Adventure of Esparks: Ushinawareta Seiseki Perivron (Game Boy)

There's like absolutely no information about this game anywhere unless I didn't look hard enough on Google. If anyone knows a bit of Japanese or heard about this game like a story or something, let me know!

You play as a dragoon (I think) that has 3 different lightning powers you can switch around. You can also collect power ups to charge your weapon for a limited time, restore your health, gain extra lives and you can summon some guy on a cloud to help assist you to take down enemies. In some levels you can also ride around on a dragon.

Game is entirely in Japanese but it was a good enough English friendly game for me to play all the way through. Has some nice graphics as well for the Game Boy and some good music. Short but fun action/platformer. I recommend checking it out!

Bill & Ted's Excellent Game Boy Adventure (Game Boy)

This was a fun action/puzzler. You play as Bill and Ted as you go through time while you collect time fragments.

Enemies (Heartless, Nobody, etc.)

Oh and maybe content that was cut before they were put in the finished product would make for an interesting ranking.

Fatal Fury 2 (SNES)

An alright port. Not much reason to play this one when Fatal Fury Special exists.

The Adventures of Star Saver (Game Boy)

In a nutshell: You play as Kevin who has to rescue his sister Connie and stop an alien invasion that's heading to Earth. You use a Mech named Tom Wolf to do all of that.

Gameplay is very simple. Action/Platformer with quite a few things going for it. You can collect grappling hooks to use to pull yourself toward the walls and if you fall down in a pitfall you can use these grappling hooks to save your life to throw upward. You can also get a Triple Shooter and a Thruster to propel yourself forward a bit in the air. If you get hit you lose your Mech and you're left with playing as Kevin who can only shoot one round per shot with his gun compared to when you're in a Mech where you can shoot more than once. If Kevin gets hit again out of his Mech, he dies. You can even regain your Mech back by getting on top of a P Power Up to stand on. The whole "losing your mech/regaining it back thing" is similar to losing your armor as Arthur from the Ghosts 'n Goblins series. The game also has a nice OST.

Street Fighter Alpha 2 (SNES)

It was quite the feat they even managed to fit this game on a cart. Quite impressive.
The results: Not so good, they scrunched up everything they could but it's just so bad you're better off playing some other version of Street Fighter Alpha 2 then this port. The game loads. A lot. Even between rounds. It's very slow pacing. The music even resets at the beginning of each round. The soundtrack is also very bad and it sounds like it belongs in a Mega Man X game, not to say that as an insult except it all sounds so off especially if you heard the originals. Kinda difficult to pull off Level 3 supers due to the button layout but that's on me. They also changed Sodom's name to Katana like they did in the SNES port of Final Fight.

Street Fighter Alpha: Warriors' Dreams (Game Boy Color)

While the visuals suffered a bit, this game is quite playable and one of the best fighters on the Game Boy Color that's available on the platform even with the limitations. You can even chain combo like in the original. Sodom also kept his name.

Final Fight One (Game Boy Advance)

This port is pretty good. Music took a hit in quality by comparison to other versions but still sounds good. The Industrial Area that was cut from the SNES port is back in this version. Once again they left out Poison and Roxy and replaced them with Billy and Sid like in the SNES port. They added in dialogue when you confront the bosses to add in a little more personality. A nice plus in this version is you can unlock the Street Fighter incarnations of Cody and Guy.

Ninja Gaiden Shadow (Game Boy)

This entry of Ninja Gaiden is very fun and solid. A little on the easy side. It takes place 3 years before the first Ninja Gaiden (NES).
Ryu only has access to the Art of the Fire Wheel as a Sub Weapon. You also get a Wire (Grappling Hook) you can use to reach ceilings and ledges. You can even hold down and press jump to hang down thin platforms.

Fun Fact: Ninja Gaiden Shadow was supposedly going to be the sequel to Shadow of the Ninja. Tecmo brought the rights from Natsume and they decided to turn the Shadow of the Ninja sequel into another Ninja Gaiden game. It really shows in both the gameplay and music. It was developed by Natume while Tecmo published it.

Mortal Kombat II (Game Boy)
This port impressed me! It was a huge improvement over the first MK game that got ported to the Game Boy by a long shot. It's fully playable. All the moves can actually be pulled off. Liu Kang, Sub-Zero, Kitana, Reptile, Shang Tsung, Mileena, Scorpion and Jax are playable while Kung Lao, Baraka, Rayden and Johnny Cage (once again) were cut due to cartridge limitations. Kintaro and Noob Saibot were also cut as well and you can fight Jade and Smoke (they were much tougher than Shao Kahn and they are only optional!).

Friendships were cut and the only Pit Fatality you can do is the Tomb with the spiked ceiling. Every character in the game also has one Fatality each compared to 2 Fatalities for every character like in the other versions and Babalities were kept in. The only Fatality that got altered is Liu Kang's Dragon Fatality and instead of chomping the torso he sets the opponent on fire instead like Scorpion's Fatality. Scorpion's Leg Takedown was also oddly cut as well.

Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon R (Super Famicom)
This was an ok beat em up. It was based on the Black Moon Clan arc from the Anime/Manga and it was only 4 levels. You can play as the 5 Sailors and Chibiusa. Chibiusa is hilarious to play as cause her hitbox is so small that most attacks go over her.

Power Instinct (SNES)
This fighter impressed me. You can dash, back dash, double jump, and even certain characters have Dive Kicks (in some form or another). The stage is even extended when you break one of the corner objects. Another thing that was a stand out is one of the characters: Otane Goketsuji. She's an old woman that has a move where if you can land her throw (kissing her opponent), she transforms into a teenager that is a much stronger form of herself that lasts for about 10 seconds. My fave character on the roster is Keith Wayne. I liked his look and moveset.

Banishing Racer (Game Boy)
This game came out in Japan only. Made by Jaleco in 1991.
It plays a bit like City Connection (another game made by Jaleco) and it has a plot. Kinda hard to make it out due to it being in Japanese but you can sorta maybe understand some of it from the opening cutscene, though the ending left me wondering WTF it was all for.
You play as a car that came to life (Think of Disney Pixar's Cars and those other cartoon shorts) and he's driving all across America.
San Francisco
Las Vegas
Denver, Colorado
Detroit
New York
It even has a few boss fights and enemies that totally pulled a Revenge of Shinobi by adding in licensed characters.

Godzilla, Donkey Kong, Pac-Man on a spring, and the Ninja Turtles. I absolutely lost it when I ran into the Ninja Turtles wielding nunchucks (thousands of them, there were more than 4!) when going through the Subway level in New York.

Darkwing Duck (Game Boy)
This port is very similar to the NES version. The levels got a lot of altercations and they felt brand new to me, even some of the boss fights are similar but got some slight changes and were toned down to fit in the Game Boy. They even switched a few locations of the Bonus Stages. The soundtrack is also the same but sounds a little different cause of the Game Boy sound channels. I think it's worth checking out IMO if you liked the NES version. I almost want to say it's a lot easier than the NES version (to me anyway).

One more thing that was a negative about Mortal Kombat on Game Boy was they cut Johnny Cage due to cartridge limitations (it wouldn't have mattered cause the port is so bad). According to an FAQ, some data of Cage is still in the game. There's a youtube vid of Goro fighting Sonya with the name "Cage". Kinda funny cause years later Sonya and Cage became a couple.

Street Fighter II (Game Boy)
Even though the game has choppy movement and the frame rate is a little iffy, it's surprisingly playable. The special moves can even be pulled off rather fluidly. This version is loosely based on Super Street Fighter 2: The New Challengers. The roster consists of Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, Guile, Zangief, Blanka, Sagat, M.Bison.
E.Honda, Dhalsim, and Vega didn't make the cut nor did Cammy, Fei Long, Dee Jay, T.Hawk. Kinda weird to see Blanka was given his Amazon River Run and Ken getting his new kick animations that they both get in Super Turbo (Super Turbo came out in 94 while Street Fighter II on Game Boy was released in 95).

Mickey's Dangerous Chase (Game Boy)
This game was really fun. It reminded me of playing another version of Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers.
