RockMan Battle & Fighters (NeoGeo Pocket Color)

An 8 bit version of both of the Arcade games (Power Battle, Power Fighters)

I was very impressed with this one. All the 8 Bit sprites and animations were really well done that mimicked the Arcade versions and it played really well.

There's also a database you can unlock as well that has information on all the characters featured in both games.

This game was a lot of fun. Nice platformer.

Felix can use all kinds of things with his Bag of Tricks: Uses a magic hat to pull out stars that shoots in 8 directions, ride a one wheeled vehicle, tank, hot air balloon, air plane, dolphin, turtle, submarine.

This game caught me by surprise.

The Sword of Hope (Game Boy)

This game reminded me of fusing Shadowgate with a dungeon crawler.

Juts like Shadowgate before it, there's a lot of puzzles that seem really cryptic unless you try everything on every screen. The battle system also reminded me of Dragon (Warrior) Quest. Sometimes the battles can be a little imbalanced and there are a few boss fights that require you to be at a certain level if you even want to stand a chance.

Such a great licensed beat em' up that will forever be lost in licensing hell. Linn Kurosawa forever.

The Smurfs (NES)

Has a few more extra levels than the Game Gear version and a boss fight with Azrael. It still has the same horrible final battle with Gargamel.

The Smurfs (Game Gear)

You play as Hefty Smurf and have to go rescue Brainy, Jokey and Smurfette from Gargamel.

Simple action platformer with some nice variety of levels to go through.

The last boss fight against Gargamel is so unbalanced. There is little to no room for error. You either got to do it correctly or lose a life.

Disney's TaleSpin (NES)

This game was alright for a shoot em' up. Nothing spectacular but it was ok.

You can collect cargo/money to get upgrades for the Sea Duck. I thought it was neat you can press the A Button to go in the opposite direction (go backwards and scrolling the screen to the left) to either go back if you missed something or to avoid getting crushed via screen scroll from an obstacle.

Most of the levels were reasonably short and the boss fights were really easy except for Don Karnage. He was the only remotely challenging part in the entire game.

Wacky Races (NES)

I played this long ago as a kid.

It was nice to revisit it again.

Surprisingly, this game is an action/platformer instead of a racing game. It was made by Atlus as well.

You play as Muttley and he can bite, jump, hover with his tail, throw bombs and use a sonic bark projectile. The bosses in the game are all the racers from the show.

Game is fun. Kinda easy with some nice tunes.

Also, just like in true fashion for those that watched the cartoon. The ending: Dastardly & Muttley end up losing the race by crashing into a pole.

Moon Diver (PS3)

I put this game off for 7 years and finally managed to finish it with 2 of my friends online.
I remember being relatively hyped for this game cause it was created by the same team that did the Strider series.

Pretty cool you can do Strider things and you find spells along the way to use different powers like extra attacks/attack all enemies/heal/more offense/defense/freeze time/etc. You can even do combination attacks that are possible in multiplayer.

I ended up not liking the game in the long run and put it off for so long. Finally managed to beat it but I was very annoyed by A LOT of things and it didn't helped that the ending sucked.

1. Lasers. Those friggin' lasers. It's like they force you to bring the freeze spell so that you don't get messed up by those damn lasers. So many of them in the later levels.

2. Bombermen explosions. These aren't too bad but they can be a little excessive.

3. Giant Wasp enemies with hitboxes that are ridiculous.

But really though. The lasers are the absolute worst part of the entire game and unless you don't bring the freeze spell you're pretty much boned.

Playing the game by yourself is bland but the multiplayer is probably the strongest part about the game where you can have fun (and suffer) together. Some of the level design choices involving the lasers is just pure trash.

Darkstalkers: The Night Warriors (PS1)

Played this via PS3.
The first game in the series.
It was pretty interesting to see how it all started and how each game got better with each installment.

I thought it was neat on how ES (EX) moves are performed by filling out the special meter and you're able to use them before the meter runs out. The following games in the series did a good improvement by letting you do a motion at the cost of 1 (or 2 meters sometimes) with any 2 buttons for ES Moves.

The 4 Star Normal AI setting was pretty tough. As you get further, the AI does the thing where they start to read your movements which I did not expect.

Pyron, the last boss of the game, is on a whole level of ridiculous.
You hear stories of Level 8 M. Bison from Street Fighter 2, Akuma in Super Turbo, Magneto from X-Men: Children of the Atom, Cyber Akuma from Marvel Super Heroes Vs. Street Fighter, Onslaught from Marvel Vs. Capcom and Gill from Street Fighter 3 on how tough they can be. I don't think you hear much talk about Pyron from the first Darkstalkers game.

Pyron...is just...wow. His normal attacks do chip damage (I guess that's where they got the idea of Sentinel doing chip damage to you in the Vs. series with his normal attacks), can teleport all over the place and can even command grab you when his teleport animation ends. His anti airs were on point and his projectiles were too much to deal with. Pyron is all over the place. I had to time him out twice in both rounds with my boy Talbain.

The mechanics for swinging around is similar to the likes of Bionic Commando with your punch glove. You can also use your punch glove to not only grab onto certain projectiles and toss them back, you can use it to propel yourself even higher when you punch the ground and even punch off of walls.

Would be cool to see Atlus revisit this game again with a sequel of sorts.

Hotline Miami 2 for PC

I'm not sure if I liked this one or the original more, but I did like the expanded abilities list, even if I didn't use them.

While part 2 was ok, I think I like the first game a little more. Most of the levels felt more open ended and more freedom on how you can approach most of them.

Part 2 I felt that most of the levels focused more on gunplay on the majority of the levels and there were too many glass windows (personal gripe).

Mega Man (Game Gear)

An ancient replay for me. The last time I played this game was when it first came out. I used to own a Game Gear long ago and I thought this was really cool until I revisited it...

For starters, this port of sorts is nothing new. The game is a mix of Mega Man 4 and 5.
Kinda funny how this game introduced me to Mega Man 5 before I played the actual Mega Man 5.

The bosses in this game are Stone Man, Napalm Man, Bright Man and Star Man. After you beat them, you move on to Cossack's Citadel but instead of going through those stages you actually face...Wave Man (for some reason Gravity Man's theme playing instead of the actual Wave Man theme) and Toad Man.

Then for whatever reason you go through Quick Man's stage from Mega Man 2 and after you pass Quick Man's stage (you don't even fight Quick Man), you get transported to Wily and he fights you in his Wily Capsule II from Mega Man 5.

The Boss AI is super sped up like they are all hooked up on sugar. Toad Man in this version is hilarious.

You can only shoot 2 regular shots instead of 3 and due to the resolution of the screen, you can't really see too far ahead or what's below you. There is a fix to this though: You can hold Button 2 (jump button) and move the D-Pad around to move the screen/camera around. Bright Man's Flash Stopper also works differently in this version and it just does a smart bomb effect (similar to Centaur Flash) when you use it.

Also, the Mega Buster is ridiculous in this version cause it does 4 units of damage instead of 3.

This game is very similar to Kung Fu/Kung Fu Master
Your character, Wang, has a jump kick that has crazy active frames and can also throw Talismans. There are certain levels where you can also jump off of walls that you need to do in order to proceed for some nice level variety.

Fun game for it's time. Worth checking out if you like Kung Fu.

Conquest of the Crystal Palace (NES)

Replayed this one.
It has been quite a few years since I played this game.
Long ago my mom found this game for me at a Goodwill for about 3 Dollars and it was a game I never heard of at that point. Developed by Quest and Published by Asmik Corporation of America.

You play as a prince named Farron and with the help of his guardian talking dog named Zap, you have to take back the Kingdom of the Crystal Palace from the evil Zaras.
Before the game begins, you get to select which Crystal that will grant you a permanent power up for the rest of the game. Spirit Crystal gives you a permanent fireball projectile, the Life Crystal increases your health bar and the Flight Crystal increases your jump height.

IMO the best one to use is the Spirit Crystal cause you can always increase your life bar and get jump shoes from the Shops throughout the levels.
Game is pretty fun and challenging. One thing you have to be aware of is you drop like a rock if you use your sword in the air. It also has a very good and catchy OST.

Little fun fact: This game was developed by Yasumi Matsuno who worked on Final Fantasy Tactics series, Ogre Battle series, Vagrant Story, Final Fantasy XII and the composer is Masaharu Iwata who composed Ogre Battle, Tactics Ogre, Final Fantasy Tactics, and Final Fantasy XII. That was neat to find out.

Similar to the SNES version, this version has it's own set of exclusive wrestlers on the roster. It has Hulk Hogan, Hacksaw Jim Duggan, The Model Rick Martel, Papa Shango, Irwin R. Schyster while the SNES version has Mr. Perfect, Tatanka, Ric Flair, Yokozuna, Ted Dibiase.

Hamtaro: Ham Ham Heartbreak (Game Boy Advance)

Replayed.
Fun adventure game and very cute. You play as Hamtaro and Bijou as you go around to fix up Hamster relationships.

Shinobi II: The Silent Fury (Game Gear)

Another replay. The last time I played this one was way back when it was released (1992).
This is, IMO, an overlooked game that deserves more attention. One of the best games on the Game Gear.

You play as Joe Musashi (the Red Ninja) and he has to rescue the Yellow, Blue, Pink and Green Ninjas as well as find the Crystals. It has some pretty good adventure elements. The other colored Ninja have their own special abilities unique to them and they will be used to find the Crystals that will allow you access to the final level. It also has a great soundtrack composed by Yuzo Koshiro.

Mortal Kombat II (Game Gear)

Despite the limitations, this port is pretty impressive. The graphics translated really well. Liu Kang, Sub-Zero, Kitana, Reptile, Shang Tsung, Mileena, Scorpion, and Jax are in while Johnny Cage, Rayden, Kung Lao and Baraka were cut. They even managed to fit Kintaro in while he was notably absent in the Game Boy version.

Golden Axe (Sega Master System)

This version of Golden Axe was kinda weird.

You play as Tarik (apparently this is another name for Ax Battler, I never knew this until I looked it up) but you can't choose Tyris Flare or Gilius Thunderhead most likely due to limitations. I always liked using Gilius followed by Tyris. I never really cared for Ax Battler at all. It's also only single player since the other two characters are not present.

Before you start the game, you have the choice of choosing which Magic you want: Earth, Fire or Thunder.
That's probably the only unique thing about this entire version. The novelty of seeing Ax Battler using Tyris' Fire Magic and Gilius' Thunder Magic.

The framerate was sorta choppy but the game was somewhat playable. It also only has 5 levels just like the Arcade original.

The ending screens has some nice art at least.

The room with the Spectral Sword can be killed a lot and your familiars level up in a matter of minutes.

My favorite boss is Beelzebub, because he's so disturbing.

He got a significant buff in difficulty in the Chapter 9 DLC in Castlevania: Harmony of Despair with new attacks.

My personal favorite Castlevania is Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse. I like all the branching paths you can take as well as having different partners.

Of the 3D Castlevanias I have played, I enjoyed Castlevania: Curse of Darkness

Rondo of Blood (the original) is that good. One of the best of the classic style Vanias.

Dawn of Sorrow was solid. Some of the touch screen stuff with the later Magic Seals got ridiculous. Julius Mode is great.

Portrait of Ruin is good stuff except for the recycled paintings you go through later on in the game. The other playable characters after the main game is completed give it some good replay value. Also loved that both Michiru Yamane and Yuzo Koshiro worked on the soundtrack together.

Order of Ecclesia was, to me, the last good Metroidvania in the series IMO. The way the maps were structured was pretty good and you didn't really have to backtrack too much. Not saying it's a bad thing, I like backtracking when it's done right which the rest of the games of this style does a good job with. The difficulty in it was really good. It reminded me of the same difficulty as the linear style gameplay of the older Castlevanias that was sorely missing since Symphony of the Night. They especially did a good job with the Boss fights cause you actually have to learn how to take them down instead of brute forcing them.

Congrats on beating Symphony of the Night.

You can still fill in the spot with the last room with Shaft. Use a Library Card when you enter to fight him.

The 5 Parts of Vlad is a callback to Castlevania II: Simon's Quest.

You can get the Axelord Armor in 3 different ways.

1. You can get one underneath the Master Librarian by repeatedly Gravity Boots jumping underneath him.

2. At the Royal Chapel, there's a Bone Pillar with a Spiked Ball. Destroying the Spiked Ball drops it. Might take a few tries for it to drop the Axelord Armor.

3. Since you have CLEAR Saved Data now, enter your name as AXEARMOR when making a new file and the Axe Lord Armor will appear in your inventory. This is in a new game of course.

As for playing as Richter, you don't level up but for every Life Pick Up you pick up it increases his HP by 10 and gives you a full heal. Playing with Richter is like playing old school Castlevania. He's a lot of fun to play with. You might want to look up a move list for him.

You want to keep using the Gravity Boots Jump underneath him but make sure he doesn't hit the roof when you jump underneath him. You want to be at the right height to do repeated Gravity Boots Jumps until you run out of MP. You can wait to regenerate your MP if you run out and keep trying until you get the 3 items.

That soul was such a pain to get cause R. The Count also happens to drop Dracula's Soul.

All I need are 3 more R. The Creature Souls.

Then I'll probably just level up the rest of my characters.

I just spent the last like 45 minutes organizing my gear. Definitely a super weak aspect of this game. Couldn't they have fixed that up in this XBLA version? Did they change like anything in this version?

for organizing your gear, I believe there is a sort button. maybe square on psx?

Yes.
On the inventory, go to your menu and put the cursor on the Right Hand or Left Hand. Press the Square Button (X Button for 360 Controller). It will open up a Sub Menu where you can quickly organize/look through your equipment by category.

I played it for a good 2 years since release.
Then I gave it a good long rest and haven't touched the game during that time period.

One of my PSN friends contacted me also owned the game and he found out I also owned it.
I ended up helping him farm for the good stuff for a month.
I became addicted all over again!

Last item obtained: Retro Cloak
It took me 7 years.

I'm very happy about it.

Encountered this really weird room in, I think the chapel, where you can sit down in a chair and this ghost lady appears and just starts sobbing over some great ominous music. Yeah, I have no idea what all that was about.

The only thing to get from the confessional booth is...Grape Juice. Only get it if you care about going for 100% item completion
One of the priests gives you it. Specifically the blue robed one. You keep going in and out of the confessional booth until the priest with the Grape Juice appears.

Symphony of the Night is good stuff. Nice to see you're enjoying it so far.

Intelligence stat is affects much damage your Spells and Sub Weapons do.

Constitution stat is for a slight defense boost. It also affects the time on how much the Poison/Curse ailment lasts.
