The Hyrule Fantasy: Zelda no Densetsu (Famicom)

I started off my New Year by replaying The Legend of Zelda, but this time the Japanese version via the Game & Watch: The Legend of Zelda.

It was kinda neat playing through the game with the different sound channels for both the music and the sound. Also less text to deal with.

Though I kinda miss destroying the Pols Voice enemies with the Bow & Arrow (they are IMMUNE to the Arrows in the Famicom version!)

The Zoras were a little tougher to see cause they didn't have a black outline on their sprite like in the US version but it wasn't too big of a deal.

I also played the Game & Watch on a full battery and by the time I was done finishing the game, it was still at full battery!

Mega Man 7 (Switch)
Mega Man 8 (Switch)
Mega Man 9 (Switch)
Mega Man 10 (Switch)

I'm closing out the year with these games.
All replayed via Mega Man Legacy Collection 2 (Switch)

Mega Man 7: A shame the Famicom was removed in Junk Man's stage in the background. Same with the random Game Boys you can dig up with Rush Search. They made Bass say Darn instead of Damn like in the original. Very minor changes.
Still a good game. I like all the secrets packed into the game and the graphics were a very nice evolution from the NES look of 1-6. Solid difficulty too especially with the final Wily fight.

Mega Man 8: They removed the Red Cross from the Rush Charger item (the item that gives you energy/weapon capsules) cause the Red Cross organization has restricted the Red Cross icon/logo in video games. I did not noticed this and was a little confused when looking for the Rush Charger on the menu after I looked up this information. Ah well...
Voice acting so bad it's so good (DOCTAH WAHWEE!). I still enjoy the cut scenes. Graphics are bright and colorful. Still very fun to play and some good special weapon usage. Only real difficulty is JUMP JUMP SLIDE SLIDE! Too bad it's not the Saturn version.

Mega Man 9: A return to the roots of the NES (mainly inspired by Mega Man 2). Some tough difficulty thrown in thanks to Inti Creates handiwork. It's good stuff. We're The Robots remains my fave track in the game and every single Special Weapon (sans Plug Ball) have very good uses outside of boss fights.

Mega Man 10: Same feeling like Mega Man 9. Bass is still the best 2 Dollar DLC IMO from back in the day. Still nice that all the DLC in both 9 and 10 is here and can be either unlocked by beating the game or using a push button code.
This one is ok. I feel it's kinda underrated.

Creepy Tale (Switch)

One of many games I got for free during the No Gravity Games Holiday Giveaway promotion.

It's a game about two brothers that went into a forest. One brother gets captured by some weird monsters and it's up to the other brother to save him.

Art style is kinda nice. Similar to the Brothers Grimm fairy tales.

It's a 2D side scrolling puzzle game.

No dialogue is told but the story is told through the actions of the characters

You collect items and find out what to do with the items you collect to proceed further while you deal with the monsters that try to stop you. Usually you have to hide/avoid or somehow dispatch some of them in some fun and interesting ways

Game is a little on the short side but it doesn't overstay it's welcome.

TAYAL (PC)

A heavily inspired (ripoff) of Mega Man.
You play as a caveboy named TAYAL who has to stop his father for reasons and the 8 Robot Masters are Furries!

I want to give this game a much higher score cause it's not THAT bad of a game. The only thing that holds it back is a few bad enemy placements and level design. The worst part of the game is probably the misinputs that happen at certain times when making jumps and sometime automatically moving forward after landing from a jump on some rare occasions when I didn't want to.

I think I got it at $2 too and I'd definitely recommend it at that price for a metroidvania fan! It's not bad, just kinda amateurish.

Gotcha

Picklock (Switch)

I got this game for free during the No Gravity Games Holiday Giveaway promotion that's currently going on to get 18 Games for free. Similar to what QubicGames did a few years ago.

You play as Picklock, a thief!
You do various missions for a pawnshop and commit acts of thievery to get cash from the missions you do. You can upgrade your house and car but it's all for aesthetics. You can even go on a vacation.

Some of the missions have pretty good variety and it's fun to figure out how to pass each mission. Game requires a little patience but it's all very satisfying.

One mission I REALLY disliked is the Motel mission where on the second floor of the Motel there's like this weird "invisible barrier" and you have to click on a very specific certain part to hide in a closet after you distract a guard to try to get past him. That part was a little frustrating.

The rest of the game is really fun. I liked it so much I even double dipped for it on Steam. It uses keyboard/mouse controls and they seem really intuitive after you get used to them. Maybe with those controls I can easily pass that one part of the Motel no problem since you have the ability to click anywhere and Picklock will go to where you want him to just by selecting.

I've been meaning to get around to Katana Zero/Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom one of these days.
Kenri posted...
Angel's Punishment (Switch)

This is kind of the opposite of what I said about Monster Boy. Angel's Punishment is a worse game in every technical sense (the dialogue is littered with typos, there are issues with hit detection, the sound and music are buggy, etc) but it does nail the Metroidvania feeling. There isn't much story, no NPCs or sidequests, just a big ol' area to explore, collect powers, and kill bosses. You can probably whip through the whole thing in one sitting. I wish it was harder; the few reviews I found described it as fairly challenging, but after the first 15 minutes or so you get a better weapon and upgrade your health and it becomes almost trivially easy. I also wish it was more polished -- idk if this makes sense, but it feels like an SNES game that you loved as a kid but when you go back to it years later it feels like a solid 7/10 at best. Still, I bought it for only a few bucks and enjoyed it a lot considering that.
Ah jeeze. That doesn't sound too good. I got this game for $1.99 last month when the tagline in the eShop description hooked me with "A respectable and very good "metroidvania" game with classic pixel art."

Double Dragon Neon (PC)

Replayed but this time around it was via online co-op with a friend.
The netcode was sorta decent. For some reason when fighting certain boss fights, the textures are bugged and the bosses are invisible on one player's end (mine) but the host (my friend) was able to see the boss. Even some projectiles were not showing. It was weird.

Also...I was Jimmy and beat my friend. I got Marian. lol...

Katana Soul (PC)

"Play as the samurai Kan and fight in a dark, demon-infested Japan. Face this 100% arcade experience without any credits or saves: you can only rely on your skills with the katana."

The game was advertised well in it's description. According to the developer on a Steam forum post, this game was inspired by Kenseiden (I had played that briefly a year or two ago but couldn't really get into it.)

I really enjoyed it. It has an aesthetic that looks like a Commodore 64 and a good soundtrack that sounds like it's from a Commodore 64 as well. It controls really well, too.
I liked this game so much I even managed to get all the Steam Achievements.

Favorite All-Time GameCube game?

Today's Poll of the Day got me thinking about Board 8 and wanting to know what some of Board 8's All-Time Favorite GameCube games from the Poll.

If not any of these choices, that's ok! You can say what your all-time favorite GameCube game (s) is in this topic.

I only briefly played Animal Crossing and Pikmin over at a friend's house long ago. Only really played Animal Crossing to play NES games on it (lol) and got the Pikmin save data just to get the Olimar trophy to unlock in Melee.

I sadly never got to play Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance.

Eternal Darkness is godlike. Gotta love those Sanity Effects and playing through the game 3 times!

Metroid Prime is great. I was skeptical at first when it was first announced and it would go from 2D to 3D but my fears were put to rest once it was released. Retro Studios managed to pull off the transition really well.

I loved Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. I played that one before I eventually got to play Paper Mario on N64 (via Wii Virtual Console). It was just overall a solid fun experience.

Super Mario Sunshine was aight. SHINE GET!

I had the most fun with Super Smash Bros. Melee. Unlocking trophies was really fun and playing with friends.

I remember when Board 8 hyped up Tales of Symphonia back in the day and I was looking for a little something different at the time and I wasn't disappointed. I had a lot of fun going through this game and even played it multiple times after completion.

Zelda Wind Waker...I remember when it was announced that it was going to use cel-shaded graphics and the majority freaked out on how Link looked and they were all like "OMG so kiddie!" and "lol CELDA!". Game released, played it in action and all was well. Animation was really good and Link was really expressive.

12 Is Better Than 6 (PC)

You play as The Mexican who has amnesia and is also on a quest for revenge.
The ending left a lot to be desired. I heard the DLC, The Apostles, sheds a little more light on the story and has new game mechanics. I'll check that out another time.

This game is basically Mexican Hotline Miami.
The art style is pretty cool. It's all done in pen and paper with the red blood as an "ink" effect.
Gameplay was ok. Some of the hit detection on the melee weapons were a little dodgy at times but it's not so bad if you just keep retreating and attacking.

Firing the guns is pretty neat. So the revolver works like a real one. After you shoot you also have to reload after every shot. You also get some upgrades you can pay with money. One of my personal fave upgrades is strapping sticks of dynamites to rats and they kamikaze into your enemies. It's as cool as it sounds and looks. The OST is also REALLY good. One of the best parts about the game.

I recommend it if you also liked Hotline Miami.

What each Ordinance does
---
The Beautiful Island Ordinance keeps your island tidy, making trash appear less often in rivers, ponds, and seas. Weeds are less likely to appear on your island, and villagers contribute to watering flowers more. Hybrid flowers are also 20% more likely to spawn when watering two parent flowers next to each other. Cockroaches will not show up in your home, no matter how long you haven't played the game.

With the Early Bird Ordinance, all villagers go to sleep earlier and wake up earlier. All stores will also open earlier: the Able Sister's shop opens from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., while Nook's Cranny opens from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The Night Owl Ordinance has all villagers go to sleep later and wake up later. All stores will also close later: the Able Sister's shop opens from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., while Nook's Cranny opens from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.

The Bell Boom Ordinance lets shops pay you 1.2x the selling price for any items you wish to sell. This means that native fruit that normally sell for 100 Bells will sell for 120 Bells under the Bell Boom Ordinance. However, items are also sold for 1.2x the price, so you won't notice a change in your "cost of living" unless you conduct business on another island. Turnips are not affected by the Bell Boom.

Even though most of the Special Weapons don't have too much of a use outside of boss weaknesses, Rush Coil having a really bad hitbox to activate the coil itself and the Mega Buster being so OP it trivializes most of the game's difficulty, I still like this entry in the series. Gravity Man's Stage is peak level design with the gravity gimmick in the stage and I'm probably one of the few that likes the Marine Bike section in Wave Man's Stage. I also really like this game's OST and the plot twist with Proto Man, if predictable, was entertaining. Also like the debut of Beat here and how OP he is.

Night Slashers (Switch/Arcade)

A beat em' up by Data East that was released in 1993.
You play as either Jake, (American Monster Hunter), Christopher (European Vampire Hunter) and Hong-Hua (Martial Artist). They are the Night Slashers and the world got overrun by monsters, mutants, walking dead and other creatures of the night. It is up to the Night Slashers to stop them.

This was a surprisingly solid beat em' up by Data East standards and it was very fun. It was pretty bloody/gory. My favorite move is the Jumping Down Attack that allows you to stomp an enemy into the ground and they get buried into the ground. You get to stomp on their heads afterward.

I beat the game as Jake and I used about less than 15 credits.
If you like beat em' ups and haven't checked it out yet, I say check it out. It's pretty cool.

Replayed via Switch.
Got 100%. Got both the Best and True Endings.
Easily one of my favorite SNES games of all time that deserves more love and recognition.
Ghouls 'N Ghosts got several sequels. Gargoyle's Quest series never gets the love and respect it deserves. Demon's Crest is easily the crown jewel. It's downright criminal on how this game was perceived as a failure back in the day.

Another Demon's Crest (Gargoyle's Quest) entry needs to happen and it's long overdue. Highly doubt Capcom will ever do another one but we can only hope.

Just Ignore Them (PC)

Before I started the game, it gave me 2 options: Play the original or the remake. I opted to play the remake cause according to the Dev, all he did was change some points that didn't make sense in the story to him and everyone. Fixed story, new sprites and music. Seemed like the best option.

You play as Mark who is in a never ending chase to escape monsters that constantly pursue him.

The game is a point and click seen in an overhead view. It's a very simple one. There doesn't seem to be much of a penalty or ways to game over except in the very short first chapter. Sadly I feel the first chapter was more exciting and trolley compared to the rest of the game's chapters. It does have multiple choices to decide your outcome. I ended up getting the Good Ending.

The worst thing about the game is probably the many spelling errors/grammar. I guess English was not the dev's first language and despite having 10 proof readers in the credits, they did not do a very good job.

Overall, it was an ok game and pretty short (about 2 hours).

Best: Gilius Thunderhead. Tyris comes a close second. Voting for Gilius.
Worst: Ax Battler. I get it, he resembles Conan but I always found Battler very boring.
