Mortal Kombat (Game Boy)

This port of Mortal Kombat is absolutely terrible and I feel bad for anyone that only owned a Game Boy as their only console that bought this on Mortal Monday.
Trying to do special moves is a chore and you have to do it with the game's own pace and not your own speed.

I had another reason for playing this game cause I wanted to check out a certain novelty about this particular port that I wanted to witness: The ability to play as Goro. It may not seem much today, but back then this was really cool and probably the only redeemable thing about this port's entire existence. Playable GORO. It's weird how you have to play as him. You have to beat the game first, enter a code at The End screen. The game restarts with you playing as Goro and all the other character names are named after the developers (Gary, Fergus, Bob, Eric, Carl, Peter, Eddy).
Naturally, Goro is a beast. 3 stomps destroys opponents.

The Combatribes (SNES)

This beat em' up plays like another version of Renegade but you have more moves at your disposal. Punches, Kicks, Running Attacks, Throws, Knee Drops, grabbing the enemy by the back of their heads and pummeling them into the pavement face first. Best move in the game: Giant Swing. The giant swing is so good it can also hit the rest of the enemies. Good for crowd control and breathing space. It's a little on the cheap side with some of the bosses.

This port is very impressive despite the use of only 4 buttons. The extra game play modes are also neat including the Grand Master Challenge mode where you fight all 17 characters on the roster in an endurance round.

Version 1.1.2

New Features

-Added the Energy Balancer. No need to buy it in a shop, this is always active. Whenever you pick up weapon energy when your current weapon's ammo is full, it automatically refills the weapon with the least ammo
-When hovering your mouse over a favorite, the game now gives you an explanation of dragging favorites to re-arrange or delete them

Changes

-Improved performance thanks to texture page optimizations
-When a new version arrives, the game now asks you if you want to update the game, rather than download it
-Reduced Big Fish's hitbox size and nerfed their contact damage

Fixed Bugs

-The auto-updater still links to the old domain
-Yoku Block timers aren't affected by Time Slow
-Charged Atomic Fire deals no extra damage against bosses, even when it's their weakness
-Defeating a boss, then going in a teleporter at the right time can cause the game to crash
-Brain Breaks move up continuously when hugging a wall
-Creating a level with nothing as the primary weapon, then re-loading the level causes the primary weapon to become Silver Tomahawk
-If you load an example level, then load another level in-editor and attempt to save it, it says you can't save an example level, preventing you from saving your level altogether
-Jumping on an enemy's head with Top Spin right under a ceiling can cause you to clip

Jurassic Park Part 2: The Chaos Continues (Game Boy)

I was very impressed by this game. It caught me by surprised on how simple and fun this game plays and it was made by Ocean of all companies that's known for making bad/mediocre games (they made very few games, many outweigh the bad from good).

Simple run n' gun game action/platformer. You play as Grant and you use a shotgun you can shoot diagonally and you also have grenades that are very strong (you can even blow up walls in some levels to find hidden shortcuts). You can also swim and shoot harpoons. The boss fights were fun but a little on the easy side.

Seriously this game is really good for a licensed game and a "hidden gem" of sorts. I recommend it!

Though it may not be canon, it was still a fine linear classic Castlevania to play through (except when finding the special items to see the true ending). Burning Mode is so broken.

Ghostbusters II (Game Boy)

It's a good game. Plays similar to New Ghostbusters II on NES. Can walk in 8 directions instead of 4, you have a variety of power ups. It's a little tougher cause your AI partner (ghost trapper) can also get hit which you don't have to worry about in New Ghostbusters II and the AI partner can be dumb at times if they get stuck around objects. I think I like New Ghostbusters II a little more, but this is a good game as well.

Kid Dracula (Game Boy)

Great spinoff parody of Castlevania where you use Alucard in chibi form. It's good stuff.

Version 1.1.1

Changes
-Weapon blocks and barriers now have distinct icons.

-Improved the hand tool sprite.

-Charge Man's second background doesn't have a fixed sky color anymore.

-Slightly decreased the hitboxes of Met, Neo Met, Hothead, Skeleton Joe, and Colton to better match how much space they occupy in the builder.

Fixed Bugs
-Fixed some mistakes in object descriptions.

-On certain devices, moving the screen can cause small gaps to appear in between tiles.

-Clicking a recent item when in the pickups category sometimes crashes the game.

-The game still links to the old domain's Captcha during account registration.

-If you scroll down in the category menu, then switch to a different game with the arrow keys, the scroll isn't reset and the icons are displayed incorrectly .

-The position of the scroll bar is a few pixels off.

-Flame Pillars bases sometimes become non-solid, allowing you to clip through them.

-If you place a Hot Dog in the air and defeat it after it's fallen to the ground, it will teleport to its initial aerial position when defeated.

-Firing two Dive Missiles at a durable enemy at the same time kills it very quickly.

-Moving an object in the tutorial can crash the game.

-Animated tile sets are not frozen or slowed down Flash Stopper/Time Slow.

-Bosses will be hit twice when you fire two Oil Blobs in the same location.

-Oil Slider blobs can clip through walls underwater.

-Oil Slider keep their momentum after colliding with a wall.

-Attempting to exit tutorial while the category menu is open, then selecting no, prevents you from placing any objects.

-Breaking a weapon block with Charge Kick from the right is unreliable.

-Breaking a weapon block with Top Spin from the bottom is unreliable.

-Mechakkero stays in its grounded animation when jumping next to a wall.

-When placed in the air, Ice Man, Time Man, Spines and Crazy Razies can clip into walls.

-Blockies can crash the game at random.

A good licensed game by Sunsoft with an awesome soundtrack. Playing as Gizmo in the form of the overhead sections from Blaster Master except you can jump and has platforming sections.

New Ghostbusters II (NES)
Another great Ghostbusters game that was only released in Europe and Japan. Apparently the Game Boy version is similar to this one but with a few differences. I'll be checking out that version soon.

Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge (Game Boy)
This game is a huge improvement over Castlevania: The Adventure in every way.

Avenging Spirit (Game Boy)

I wish I played this game sooner. Very fun and original action/platformer. You play as a Ghost who can possess his enemies and gain their abilities as you go on a mission to rescue your girlfriend. It has both a good and bad ending for some replay value.

Ghost Sweeper Mikami: Joreishi wa Nice Body (Super Famicom)

This is based on a comedy horror manga/anime (I never knew it existed). You play as Reiko who uses a magic baton/spiritual warding rod to exorcise ghosts. You can upgrade the weapon from power up pick ups and can even swing on platforms with it. It's a lot of fun for an action/platformer and it's English friendly without knowing the plot that's in Japanese. Good stuff by Natsume.

Spartan X 2 (Famicom)

The sequel to Kung Fu/Kung Fu Master
It was pretty good. You have the same move set like in the original Kung Fu and 2 new moves you can do when you hold down for 2 seconds, then you can unleash a shoulder throw when an enemy approaches you from behind or an uppercut which is very strong. It also has a nice variety of levels and new enemies/bosses you face off. I recommend it if you liked Kung Fu.

Castlevania Harmony of Dissonance
First time playing this. It plays great, it's fun, and long. There is only one problem. The music is pretty bad. There is only one good track in this game. My understanding is they didn't have cart space for anything of a higher-quality. Still, outside the music the game is fine.

It's believed the music took a hit in quality when they focused on everything else in that game like the graphics, the aura surrounding Juste was a way to see him easily for the original GBA due to no backlight. The GBA SP wasn't a thing until a year later after this game's release. Some of the music is ok, it reminds me of 8bit and it might of fit with the musical theme for dissonance (maybe). Not as good as other musical entries considering it's Castlevania. My fave track from that game is Offense and Defense (music from the Marble Corridor)

Wolverine (NES)

Good Geoff Follin Music. The rest of the game is nonsense. Wolverine hurts himself if he uses his claws but can one shot most enemies if you slash them. You're better off punching or avoiding most enemies. Berzerker mode is pointless most of the time. Some of the platforming is ok but tricky. Sabretooth taunting Wolverine in between the levels is amusing.

lol story (or lack of it): I find it hard to believe to see Magneto working for Sabretooth. Seeing Magneto play second fiddle with Sabretooth being the main villain over Magneto seems weird except not really since Wolverine has more history with Sabretooth.

Citadale: The Legends Trilogy (Wii U)

Was surprised to see this in the eShop. I got a discount of it cause I owned the first game (Citadale: Gate of Souls). It comes with the first game (Gate of Souls) along with 2 other games: Curse of Darkness and Legacy of Fate.

These games...are heavily inspired (ripped off) of the linear Castlevanias right down to the designs, gameplay and the simple story.

First game was glitchy as hell and I made a few posts about finding bugs on Miiverse for it's standalone release.

Curse of Darkness and Legacy of Fate were a tiny bit better but not by much. The characters you play have a better reaching attack compared to Gate of Souls and it had some decent chip tunes compared to the first game.

I wouldn't really recommend it even if you're really starving for something even remotely trying to resemble Castlevania.
